Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church 725 SW Buchanan Street, Topeka KS 66606 Telephone: (785) 233-0767 email: office@topekatlc.org Website: trinitylutherantopeka.org God of all creation who gives us this beautiful day and life itself, who hung the stars in the sky, and who also generously provides our daily bread, we welcome you into our presence. Dear Lord, what can I do for you today? October 14, 2018 21st Sunday after Pentecost

21st Sunday after Pentecost October 14, 2018 Evangelical Lutheran Worship, Setting 2 The rich man who comes to ask Jesus what he should do to inherit eternal life is a good man, sincere in his asking. Mark s gospel is alone in saying that Jesus looked on him and loved him. Out of love, not as judgment, Jesus offers him an open door to life: sell all you own and give it to the poor. Our culture bombards us with the message that we will find life by consuming. Our assemblies counter this message with the invitation to find life by divesting for the sake of the other. WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS GATHERING PRAYER See Bulletin Cover CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS Please stand as you are able. P Blessed be the holy Trinity, the one who fashions us, the one who heals us, the one who reforms us again and again. C Amen. P Let us confess our sin, calling for God's transforming power. Silence for reflection and self-examination. P Source of all life, C we confess that we have not allowed your grace to set us free. We fear that we are not good enough. We hear your word of love freely given to us, yet we expect others to earn it. We turn the church inward, rather than moving it outward. Forgive us. Stir us. Reform us to be a church powered by love, willing to speak for what is right, act for what is just, and seek the healing of your whole creation. Amen. P God hears our cry and sends the Spirit to change us and to empower our lives in the world. Our sins are forgiven, God s love is unconditional, and we are raised up as God s people who will always be made new, in the name of Jesus Christ. C Amen. GATHERING HYMN God of Grace and God of Glory ELW HYMN 705 GREETING P The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C And also with you. 2

PRAYER OF THE DAY P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Let us pray. Almighty and ever-living God, increase in us your gift of faith, that, forsaking what lies behind and reaching out to what lies ahead, we may follow the way of your commandments and receive the crown of everlasting joy, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. C Amen. Please be seated. WORD FIRST READING: AMOS 5:6-7, 10-15 Genesis 2 stresses that people are not meant to live in isolation but in relationship. Out of love for humanity, God creates them male and female, to provide companionship for each other and to become with each other one flesh. The Hebrew words used here are ish (man) and ishshah (woman). 6 Seek the LORD and live, or he will break out against the house of Joseph like fire, and it will devour Bethel, with no one to quench it. 7 Ah, you that turn justice to wormwood, and bring righteousness to the ground! 10 They hate the one who reproves in the gate, and they abhor the one who speaks the truth. 11 Therefore because you trample on the poor and take from them levies of grain, you have built houses of hewn stone, but you shall not live in them; you have planted pleasant vineyards, but you shall not drink their wine 12 For I know how many are your transgressions, and how great are your sins you who afflict the righteous, who take a bribe, and push aside the needy in the gate. 13 Therefore the prudent will keep silent in such a time; for it is an evil time. 14 Seek good and not evil, that you may live, and so the LORD, the God of hosts, will be with you, just as 5

you have said. 15 Hate evil and love good, and establish justice in the gate; it may be that the LORD, the God of hosts, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph. L The Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. PSALM 90:12-17 Sung responsively 12So teach us to num- ber our days that we may apply our hearts to wisdom. 13 Return, O LORD; how long will you tarry? Be gracious to your servants. 14Satisfy us by your steadfast love in the morning; so shall we rejoice and be glad all our days. 15 Make us glad as many days as you af- flicted us and as many years as we suf- fered adversity. 16Show your ser- vants your works, and your splendor to their children. 17May the graciousness of the Lord our God be upon us; prosper the work of our hands; pros- per our handiwork. SECOND READING: HEBREWS 4:12-16 We cannot hide from God, to whom we are completely accountable. Nevertheless, Jesus understands our human weakness and temptations, because he also experienced them. Therefore we can approach the throne of grace to receive divine mercy from Christ. 12 Indeed, the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing until it divides soul from spirit, joints from marrow; it is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 And before him no creature is hidden, but all are naked and laid bare to the eyes of the one to whom we must render an account. 14 Since, then, we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. L The Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Please stand as you are able. 6

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION P The Holy Gospel, according to Mark, the tenth chapter. C Glory to you, O Lord. GOSPEL: MARK 10:17-31 Jesus has been teaching his disciples about what is most valued in God s eyes. A conversation with a rich man brings his message home to the disciples in a way that is surprising but unforgettable. 17 As [Jesus] was setting out on a journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him, Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life? 18 Jesus said to him, Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. 19 You know the commandments: You shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; You shall not defraud; Honor your father and mother. 20 He said to him, Teacher, I have kept all these since my youth. 21 Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me. 22 When he heard this, he was shocked and went away grieving, for he had many possessions. 23 Then Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, How hard it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God! 24 And the disciples were perplexed at these words. But Jesus said to them again, Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God. 26 They were greatly astounded and said to one another, Then who can be saved? 27 Jesus looked at them and said, For mortals it is impossible, but not for God; for God all things are possible. 28 Peter began to say to him, Look, we have left everything and followed you. 29 Jesus said, Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields, for my sake and for the sake of the good news, 30 who will not receive a hundredfold now in 7

this age houses, brothers and sisters, mothers and children, and fields, with persecutions and in the age to come eternal life. 31 But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first. P The Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to you, O Christ. Please be seated. CHILDREN S TIME & SERMON PR. BOB DEALEY HYMN OF THE DAY Son of God, Eternal Savior ELW HYMN 655 Please stand for the final stanza of the hymn. P Let us confess our faith with the words of the Apostles Creed. C I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. THE PRAYERS A Longing for God s will to be fulfilled among us, we pray persistently for the church, the world, and all people in need. A brief silence. A Almighty God, holy and righteous, cut our hearts open by your living word. Break down our pride and self-assurance, and transform us by your gentle mercy. Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. A Bless workers who clear fields to prepare for the barren season to come. Bring the harvest of your creation to completion, even as we look forward to the blossoming of new life. Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. A Exercise and establish your true justice in courtrooms, in prisons, and in neighborhoods. Guide those who manage great wealth to do so with generosity and compassion. Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. 8

A Pour out favor this day upon those who are in need of comfort and healing, especially Brad Carpenter. Send them companions who will show them you are ever near. Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. A Build up relationships among people of different beliefs and backgrounds. Use the cooperation between this congregation and others in our community to reveal your goodness. Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. A Bestow blessings upon Marlene Hassan, Conrad Youngblom, Rosemary O Neil, and Tresa Johnson as they celebrate their birthdays, and upon Kade Welp, Ellen Irwin, Bryah Wakes, Ted Murphy, and Brooke Ralph as they remember their baptisms. Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. A Hear the prayers of St. Mark Lutheran in Clayton, Trinity Lutheran in Russellville, Missouri, and Bethesda Lutheran in Winona, Kansas. Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. P Gather us with all the saints whom you have made righteous in the death and resurrection of Christ. Through him give us all the gifts of your kingdom and life eternal. Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. P Enfold all things in your compassion, O God, and bring us into your life through the faithfulness of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. C Amen. THE PEACE P The peace of the Lord be with you always. C And also with you. Let us greet one another with God s peace. Please be seated. OFFERING & OFFERTORY PRESENTATION OF THE GIFTS Please stand as you are able. 9

OFFERTORY PRAYER A God of life, you give us these gifts of the earth, these resources of our life and our labor. Take them, offered in great thanksgiving, and use them to set a table that will heal the whole creation; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Light. C Amen. 10

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Lift up your hearts. C We lift them to the Lord. P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C It is right to give our thanks and praise. P It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: EUCHARISTIC PRAYER P In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup, we proclaim the Lord s death until he comes. 11

THE LORD S PRAYER P Lord, remember us in your kingdom, and teach us to pray: C Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. INVITATION TO COMMUNION P Speak to us, O Lord, in the breaking of the bread, and make us one with you. Please be seated. LAMB OF GOD We invite all who believe in Jesus Christ as their Savior to share with us in Holy Communion. All are welcome to join us at the Lord s table. White grape juice is available as an alternative to wine. Everyone is invited forward to receive communion or a blessing. Hands cupped open indicate an openness to receive communion; hands closed reflect a desire to receive a blessing. Note: we have gluten-free communion wafers available. If gluten-free is your preference, please let the pastor know when you are at the communion rail. 12

COMMUNION HYMNS We Come to the Hungry Feast ELW HYMN 479 God, Whose Giving Knows No Ending ELW HYMN 678 Please stand as you are able. PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION A Holy and compassionate God, in bread and wine you give us gifts that form us to be humble and courageous. May your words come to life in our serving and in our witness, that we might speak a living voice of healing and justice to all the world, through Jesus Christ, our rock and our redeemer. C Amen.
