Close encounter with wild elephant in Bandipur Brothers Swarup Kumar and Karthick Kumar (residents of Thambiah Road, T. Nagar) had a close encounter with a wild elephant when they went on a safari to Bandipur Tiger Reserve in Karnataka on Sept. 30. According to Swarup, after driving a few kilometers inside the forest area in a Gypsy driven by a Forest Dept. official, they saw an elephant standing alone and shaking its body near a tree. Describing the adventure, he said, When I tried to capture images on my camera, the jumbo started moving angrily towards us. We were shaken out of our wits when it came within striking distance of the vehicle. The Forest official was unperturbed and cautioned them to keep calm, not move or make any noise, and avoid eye contact with the elephant. Fortunately, the suggestion given by the official helped as the elephant stopped in its tracks and retraced its path into the bush. It was only then that they noticed that it was trying to protect its calf which was hidden by the tall grass. They quickly left the spot and continued with the safari without facing any further close encounters. They did manage to see Indian yellow leopard, sloth bear, a herd of Indian gaur, spotted and barking deer, and a variety of birds. We enjoy wildlife safaris and have visited a number of sanctuaries in India, Swarup said. Their contact numbers are 89402 34122 and 81244 87585. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Drop garbage in bins, not around them Sir, It is a common sight to see mounds of garbage around bins even when the bins are not full. Similar is the situation around the bins in Motilal Street (where I reside) and in Ramaswamy Street, Mahalakshmi Street and Dhandapani Street, all in T. Nagar. Garbage filled bags are often thrown from moving vehicles which, more than often not, fall on the road instead of in the bin. The residents should take special care to dump garbage only inside the bins, as it affects the community hygiene and is also unsafe for sanitation workers who have to clear the garbage with their hands. Further, to prevent the harmful effects/health hazard caused by the spillover of garbage around the bins, Corporation should sprinkle bleaching powder after every collection or at regular intervals. V. S. Narayanaswamy Corporation to renovate public toilets With most of the public toilets not being maintained properly, Chennai Corporation is planning to rope in private operators to renovate and maintain the public toilets in the city s 15 zones including this neighbourhood According to a senior Corporation official, over the years, the maintenance of public conveniences has become a private domain of the elected local representatives and the maintenance contract is awarded to those persons identified by the Councillors. There is no control over the maintenance and most of the toilets are either in dilapidated condition or have no proper sanitation facilities. He said that of the 866 public toilets, Teynampet zone has the maximum of 149, followed by T. Nagar and Mambalam with around 80. Apart from these there are around 1000 mobile e-toilets most of which are in a shabby condition. Further, most of these e-toilets have remained closed for a long time for want of regular maintenance. Siesta on bed of sand Page 7 RTI reveals Corporation paid a firm Rs. 22 cr for unfinished canal work As per replies to a RTI filed by a resident, Chennai Corporation has paid a firm in T. Nagar the full amount of Rs. 22 crores for an unfinished canal improvement project in MGR Nagar. The RTI replies revealed that work on the 1.8 km long MGR canal is still incomplete, even seven years after work commenced. But, the Corporation made the full payment of Rs. 22 crores in 2015. Civic activist and resident of MGR Nagar V. Gopalakrishnan, who filed the RTI, said the work was completed only for 1.3 km. The Corporation had taken up improvement work of four canals in 2010. In 2011, the project was carried out by SPL Infrastructure, a company based in T. Nagar. The project included construction of retaining walls on both sides of the canal, removal of encroachments and widening of the canal to its original width. But the encroachments were neither removed nor the canal widened. The retaining wall was also not constructed for nearly 700m, he said. Recharge wells prevent water inundation Following a special initiative by residents, four recharge wells of 3ft diameter each were laid some months back in a 100-meter stretch in Raman Street and Lodhi Khan Street, T. Nagar under the Smart City project. There was no inundation in the stretch during the heavy rains last week as the rain water percolated into the recharge wells. However, in the same streets where there are no such wells, there was rain water stagnation in spite of storm water drains. This is because the inlets to the drains are clogged with garbage and other waste. A resident of Lodhi Khan Street told Mambalam Times that illegal discharge of waste water from kitchens and also sewage water flowing in result in the drains getting clogged. Further, garbage and other waste are dumped into the drains and. as the drains are not desilted regularly, this inhibits the flow of water. Recharge wells and storm water drains not only improve the water table, but also prevent inundation during heavy rains, he added. Property tax doubles in some areas in T.
