July marked the end of my official three-year term as your Lay Director. The time has gone by quickly and I have benefitted from the many blessings given to this movement by the Holy Spirit. Please pray that the Holy Spirit calls someone within the community to take over and to bring new life and energy to this movement. Remember that God doesn t call the equipped, he equips the called. In the interim, I will continue to serve until a new Lay Director has taken over. At the end of June, we had a most blessed men s Cursillo weekend. Mark Carter served as Rector and set a prayerful and relaxed tone for the weekend. The team, for the very first time, included three men who just made their weekends last summer. Six wonderful candidates lived their weekend and found it most helpful as evidenced by their sentiments at the Closura. The prayers from our community, and around the world, were clearly answered in abundance. As I write this article, Vicky Mundt and her team are in formation preparing for the upcoming women s weekend. I m sure that the candidates will also find it to be a grace filled experience. Look for an update on the women s weekend inside this newsletter. Mike Mundt has done a great job taking over as our new treasurer. He replaced Joyce Dutilly and we are so grateful for her many years of service to our community. Mike has helped us to become 501 (C) (3) compliant, to file a federal income tax return, to formally create Articles of Association, to request an exemption from the registration requirements Maryland Solicitation s Act, and to open a new bank account with our correct Federal Tax ID number. We are also trying to obtain general liability insurance for our community. We are again hosting a GRAND ULTREYA and FIESTA at our house for the entire community on August 19 th. Please see the flyer. And, please come and enjoy food and fellowship with each other and with our new Cursillistas. Families are welcome. Lastly, I wanted to thank Father Larry and Deacons Monti, Mark, Nick, and German who have provided such wonderful spiritual advice and support to our community. Being with several of them on the men s weekend and at a recent Ultreya reminded me how much we benefit from their presence and from their knowledge of our faith and their ability to share it with us in ways that we can understand. Please keep them all in your daily prayers. De Colores Dave Luddy Lay Director Message by Dave Luddy Spiritual Direction by Father Larry Adamczyk Jesus say that the Kingdom of Heaven is the pearl of great prices that we should be willing to sacrifice everything to obtain. Unlike the treasure of gold, in the earlier parable, a pearl is sought after as something desired for its own worth and beauty; not for what it can purchase as with golden treasure. Jesus is that pearl of great price. A pearl is made by a little bit of sand irritating a oyster. The pearl gets its sheen and luster because the oyster responds to the pain of the sand. Jesus is the pearl of great price because He is not only the fulfillment of all the Old Testament prophecies but also the product of all the trials and tribulations of God's people in the Old Testament; layer after layer, through the centuries, until His resurrection and Ascension. When faced with trial and tribulations we should realize that if we allow these trials to polish and mold us, we can become a thing pearl in the kingdom of God. 3

New Baltimore Archdiocese Cursillistas - Welcome to your 4 th Day! By Andy Roe Hello New Cursillistas and Welcome to your 4 th Day! Please come to the General Ultreya on Saturday, August 19. See info in this newsletter. When you re a Cursillista you literally see God everywhere in everything. My mom passed away recently at the age of 90 and I was with her during her final days. She prayed the rosary at least 3 times a day for most of her life and watched the daily mass on EWTN religiously. What did she pray for? Her children and her friends. There s a very good chance I wouldn t be alive right now if it weren t for the prayers of my mom. She had the piety leg of the stool covered. I was able to say goodbye to her while she was still lucid. She knew she was going to heaven and was ready and willing to go. A Eucharistic minister came by and prayed with us. We thought she was too far gone for communion and let him go. I looked closely at my mom after he left and realized she was telling me that she wanted to receive communion despite the fact that she hadn t eaten or drank anything for several days. I ran out to the hall and pulled him back in the room so my mom could receive Christ for the last time on earth. I was so glad I was there to see that! She died 2 days later in a hospice very peacefully again while I was in the room with her. My grandniece Mia and a friend Maria were also in the room. It was the first time Mia or I had ever seen someone pass over. Mia started laughing. Maria said it s not funny. I said no it s not funny it s beautiful & peaceful and there are many ways to react to someone finally coming face to face with our Lord with none of them being wrong. Mia stopped laughing and we called the hospice nurse in to confirm what we already knew. Mom was with Jesus! I was happy for her and sad that she was gone at the same time. I knew we would miss her greatly. This conflict between being happy she s in heaven and sad that she s gone will be exhausting for a while but eventually the sadness will wane. Many tears will be shed but we are all confident that she is in a much better place now with my Dad and Brother who preceded her. My daughter Sarah dreamt last night that my mom was singing Blue Skies to all of us and then said goodbye to everyone and left. Here are the words in case you don t remember: Blue skies, Smiling at me, Nothing but blue skies, Do I see Bluebirds, Singing a song, Nothing but bluebirds, All day long Never saw the sun shining so bright, Never saw things going so right Noticing the days hurrying by, When you're in love, my how they fly Blue days, All of them gone, Nothing but blue skies, From now on We all know my mom s in heaven now praying for us with even more power than before. That s why we shout from the rooftops that we re Christians. So that others may have the peace that we feel in Christ Jesus. Our God is an awesome God! Peace, Andy Roe 5

What does the Cursillo Experience mean to you? When we completed our weekend I would say that 99.9% were truly enthusiastic (filled with the Spirit). For me, meeting on Saturday morning after Mass with my group was always special and getting together with a priest who made the weekend on Wednesdays for Confessions, Mass and Lunch was a highlight of my week with about 10 Cursillistas men from various parishes in Center City Philadelphia. Although I don t have that same weekly experience, several couples get together twice a month and meditate and discuss the upcoming Sunday readings and everyone is involved in some parish activity which includes 2 deacons, Eucharistic ministers who visit hospitals, are involved in St. Vincent DePaul, the KofC etc, and make themselves available to their pastors for special projects. I meet with a man once a week who I sponsored for the Cursillo and has been active in several ministries over the years. However, in my mind, what I got out of the weekend was that we were to reach out and introduce people in our environment to Catholicism. As time passed and I retired, I put together a program based on my political, insurance and diaconate experiences to reach out and bring fallen away Catholics back to the Church and I get about 1000+ hits a month on my website (www.missionofthe72.org) but have chosen not to develop any statistics because I have asked Our Lady and the Holy Spirit to be in charge. Like I have said so many times, what man would say no to his mother, even if He was God and Jesus promised us the Holy Spirit whom we constantly pray for direction and inspiration on our Cursillo weekend. So why should I get in the way? So keep praying the Scriptures and listen carefully to the homilists and ask yourself what is God saying to me and what am I going to do about it? De Colores; Deacon Monti, retired Archdiocese of Baltimore Diocese of Harrisburg Spiritual Director by Deacon Monti Deacon Monti is serving on the Board of the Greater Baltimore Center for Pregnancy Concerns (GBCPC) - read about this wonderful cause in this newsletter! School of Leaders by Vicky Mundt The Cursillo School of Leaders (SoL) is for Cursillistas who wish to grow in service to the Cursillo community. If the Cursillo Movement is an umbrella, the people in the School of Leaders are the spokes that support it and keep it strong. Through fellowship, we encourage each other in spiritual growth and a growing appreciation of the Cursillo purpose, mentality and method. The Cursillo School of Leaders is a Servant School and is open to all Cursillistas who are interested in serving and strengthening the movement! Bring a friend! I would like to welcome our new Cursillistas and extend an invitation to join us in the School Leaders. We meet the 4 th Monday of every month. What do we do? I'm glad you asked...the School of Leaders is a Group Reunion of leaders. We begin with prayer, Leaders group reunion and then study. Our Study is a doctrinal presentation led by Deacon Mark Loepker and then we have a technique presentation about the Cursillo method. Next we discuss what is going on in the 3 sections of the movement: Precursillo, Cursillo and Postcursillo. Then announcements and we close with prayer. The Upcoming schedule: August 28- The doctrinal presentation is Chapter 3 of The Joy of the Gospel. Pope Francis says " In this Exhortation I wish to encourage the Christian faithful to embark upon a new chapter of evangelization marked by this joy, while pointing out new paths for the Church s journey in years to come The technique presentation will be a re-cap and lessons learned on the Men's & Women's Weekends. September 25 - The doctrinal presentation, we will continue our study/discussion of The Joy of the Gospel with Chapter 4. October 23 - The doctrinal presentation, we will continue our study/discussion of The Joy of the Gospel with Chapter 5. The technique presentation is TBD. All are welcome. We meet at Our Lady of the Fields in room 205 from 7:00-9:00 pm. For more information, contact Vicky Mundt at 410-571-5558 or mundtvl@gmail.com. 8

Palanca by Darlene Conley PALANCA - prayers, sacrifices and acts of mercy It must be: GENUINE, SINCERE, PERMANENT, AND INDIVIDUAL AND COMMUNITY What is palanca? What is a palanca letter? A palanca letter is one sent to the candidates and team informing them of the prayers and sacrifices that you are offering to God on their behalf. A letter may be sent explaining what type of palanca is being offered, but the letter is NOT the palanca. The actual palanca is the action- intercessory prayer, sacrifice or works of mercy, and it can be done without a letter. Our palanca must be genuine and sincere. It can be individual or community. Some examples: rosary, adoration, extra mass, novena, or offering your joys or difficulties for the person or situation in which you are requesting. Our palanca is very important and essential for our Cursillo Community. Please remember to watch for the weekly palanca that is sent to Rose Marcin by email. This is the weekends that are going on around the world and need our prayers. They also pray for our weekends; which is Aug. 3rd to the 6th. PLEASE REMEMBER YOUR PRAYERS ON THE PRAY CROSS!!!!! During our Ultreya which we have on the second Friday of the month we offer up our team and candidates. We circle around the Eucharist for all our petitions. Palanca Mass and Social Calling all Cursillistas! Please join your Secretariat for a Palanca Mass, Pot Luck Brunch and Discussion about upcoming events in Baltimore! We continue to host an Ultreya the 2 nd Friday of the month at Church of the Crucifixion in Glen Burnie! The Ultreya starts promptly at 7:30 PM and lasts one hour. We meet in the basement of the church. Church of the Crucifixion is located at 100 Scott Avenue, Glen Burnie, MD 21060. For more information contact Darlene Conley at darleneandbud157@aol.com! The Cursillistas in Annapolis have volunteered to host an Ultreya on the 5th Friday of the month. We will begin at 7:30pm at the home of Mike and Vicky Mundt. The address is 1391 Sunwood Terrace, Annapolis, MD 21409. Please contact Vicky Mundt for more information 410-571-5558 or mundtvl@gmail.com My Dear Cursillistas; I serve on the Board of the Greater Baltimore Center for Pregnancy Concerns (GBCPC) which has four locations (http://pregnantandneedhelp.org/) and has received two very generous financial gifts to purchase an office building which is right next door to Planned Parenthood on Howard Street in Baltimore City at which it is estimated 40-50% of all abortions in MD are performed each year. Like all our four Centers this will be a welcoming environment to attract abortion minded women to receive a free sonogram and view their baby on a large overhead screen, receive a free layette plus there will be trained counselors to answer any questions they may have. However, that is only one-third (1/3) of the story because there are two addition floors that could be built out for job training moms, more counseling rooms and numerous other services that the GBCPC could provide. So we are facing a huge expense above and beyond the generous financial gifts we received that could save numerous lives. There are two actions you can take. The first is to pray for the success of this effort and mission. The second is to budget a regular dollar contribution to this project. (Please designate 328 N Howard as the Gift Recipient) For this effort you will receive a monthly informative newsletter from the GBCPC and my sincerest appreciation for whatever monetary gift you can make. So please visit our website and direct any technical questions to our executive office in Essex MD at 410-391-6699. Thanking you in advance for your consideration. It would be a great blessing if you would pass this request on to your friends on your email lists. I remain with you in His Service; Deacon Monti, Board member of the Greater Baltimore Center for Pregnancy Concerns We know our Cursillo Community is very generous! Deacon Monti, one of our Spiritual Directors, is very passionate about this charity. We understand that there are many worthwhile causes, which you may already assist. If you are looking for a new organization to help fund, please consider contributing to this one. Praise the Lord for being blessed to be able to support our brothers and sisters in need. 11
