Christian Education Resource Center & Women s Studies Dear friends and partners in Christ, It is with praise and thanksgiving that I would like to share with you about our first training seminar of this academic year 2013-2014 which was under the theme Project Hope - Syria held between Sept 9-13, 2013 at The Near East School of Theology. As you are well aware of the deteriorating situation in Syria, we at NEST felt the need to prepare a special training seminar for Sunday School teachers and youth leaders who are ministering in their churches and communities in such traumatic situations. We made sure that our sessions were both targeting the leaders and helping them learn how to cope with the traumatic situations and also learn how to help others whom they minister to, who are in the same situation. As we were in the last weeks of preparation, the political situation got even worse with fears of impending bombings of the US on Syria, yet God opened the way and putting our trust in God we decided to not postpone the training seminar and go forward with it with full hope that we will have the seminar. And we are thankful that 20 young leaders from 5 regions in Syria were able to come although 6 participants who had registered were not able to join the group. We also had 3 social workers from an NGO who have been working with Syrian refugee families, especially children. Participants of Project Hope - Syria

A brief overview of Project Hope - Syria program We started our day with worship and meditation which was led by the participants working in groups. Session One Positive Thinking in Times of Crisis by Mrs. Nada Haddad. Mrs. Nada Haddad is a Youth and Family Counselor and Director of I AM A Woman Center. This session was basically learning about how and why people react in different ways when facing a crisis. This session also focused on how positive thinking can be a healthy way of coping with any crisis that can happen. The participants were eager to learn more about this topic as they shared how they and the Syrian people in general are facing tough times and living from crisis to crisis. Mrs. Nada Haddad

Session Two & Three Preparing and Leading Worship Services I & II by Mrs. Anna Artin Ghantous. The first session was an interactive theory session while the second session was a workshop one where the participants worked in groups to prepare a worship session for their group back in their churches. Mrs. Anna Artin Ghantous is a graduate of NEST and serves with her husband in the Menyara Church, Lebanon. Mrs. Anna Artin Ghantous Session Four How to deal with Children and Adolescents by Dr. Ketty Sarouphim-McGill Dr. Ketty Saroufim is an Associate Professor of Psychology and Education in the Lebanese American University. In her presentation she focused on age characteristics of both children and adolescents and helped the participants learn how to deal with each age group through the proper educational and psychological methods. Dr. Ketty Sarouphim-McGill

Session Five Christian Education in Traumatic Situations by Mrs. Patty Ford Mrs. Patty Ford is a Christian Educator and is serving with her husband, Dr. Peter Ford in the NEST Community. She focused in her session on what is Christian Education and how Christian Education can be of great source of help while ministering to children and youth. She also helped leaders to think creatively when preparing lessons, thus she provided a wide range of art material so that the participants could practice their creativity and take what they prepared back so that they could use it in their ministries. Mrs. Patty Ford Session Six Games and their Role in Youth Ministry by Mr. Maher El Hajj. Mr. Maher El-Hajj is the Director of the Youth For Christ organization in Lebanon. He is an experienced youth leader who has served in many capacities. He presented his topic with great vigor as he pointed out how important games are for human psychological health and how youth leaders and Sunday school teachers can incorporate games into their sessions and lessons.

Mr. Maher El-Hajj Session Seven Grief, Loss, Tragedy, and Trauma By Dr. Naji Abi Hashem Dr. Naji Abi Hashem is a Clinical and Cultural Psychologist, Author, Speaker, Consultant, Professor, and Caregiver at Large. His presentation was quite an essential part of our training program as many of the participants themselves had lost homes and loved ones because of the situation in Syria. This session helped the leaders realize the many forms of trauma and the healthy ways and means to help themselves and others as well. Dr. Naji Abi Hashem

Session Eight Reaching Children Through Sunday School & Kid s Clubs By Mr.Youeel Tarabay Mr. Youeel Tarabay, is Executive Director of Grain of Wheat Ministry in Lebanon (Grain de Ble Liban). Mr. Youeel Tarabay Session Nine Sports Ministry By Mr. Nicolas Haddad Mr. Nicolas Haddad is the director of Life Agape, Lebanon and he is also responsible for Athletes in Action organization where they minister to young people through sports. He presented mainly about how sports ministry is done and after the presentation participants met with their own church group leaders to prepare a one day sports event that included a spiritual session also. Mr. Nicolas Haddad

Sessions Ten & Eleven Preparing and Leading Bible Studies I & II By Preacher Rola Sleiman Preacher Rola Sleiman is the pastor of the Synod Presbyterian Church in Tripoli, Lebanon. In the first session she presented the basics of Bible study and the techniques of leading Bible Studies, esp. when ministering to youth and young adults. She also stressed the importance of having a sound theology to lead such sessions. In the second session, participants were given a passage from the scriptures so that in groups, they prepare a Bible study session. Preacher Rola Sleiman Between Sessions

Trip & Dinner A trip was organized to the ancient town of Byblos (Jbeil) for our participants after which we had dinner together. Our thanks go first to God for making it possible for these young leaders to come from Syria and join in the training. They shared with us how much they needed such a training seminar with these important topics. They felt blessed, refreshed and full of hope as they shared with us how they were going to go back to their churches and communities to minister and help those whom they serve. Our heartfelt thanks also go to the Protestant Church in Hessen-Nassau (EKHN), Germany, especially to the Rev. Detlev Knoche - Director of the Ecumenical Center. Without the funds provided by EKHN, NEST would not have been able to hold such an important and essential training in these times of trouble and uncertainty for the Sunday school teachers and youth leaders who are serving in the struggling churches in Syria.

We called our training seminar, Project Hope - Syria, believing that the God of Hope will renew and refresh these young leaders as they go back to serve in their churches and communities. We are truly thankful that God blessed our mission. God bless you.
