ADVENT LUTHERAN CHURCH Volume 26 Issue 2 February 2015 Join us for! 8:00 and 11:10 a.m. Traditional Services 9:15 a.m. Sunday School 10:25 a.m. Contemporary Service Inside this issue: Lent Schedule 2 Birthdays & Anniversaries 3 Souper Bowl 4 Memorials 5 Game Night 6 ABC Learning Center 7 Quilting 7 ARE YOU READY FOR LENT? Ash Wednesday begins on February 18th this year. It begins the fortyday season of Lent: forty days which correspond to the time Jesus spent in the desert wilderness being tempted by Satan. It is not a season we should enter into lightly, for this is one of the most important parts of the Christian year. Here we encounter our faith in all its fullness: in all its depth and height, in all its darkness and light, in all its pain and glory. Lent is a somber time, a time for reflection and growth, a time to change our ways and deepen our commitment to Christ. Our Lord entered into suffering and death during this period on our behalf. The least we can do is enter into the spiritual demands of the season for Him. At Advent, it is our custom to gather as God s people each Wednesday at 12 noon or at 7:30 p.m. for meaningful worship as we sing, pray and hear an interesting series of sermons as we will try to gain a better understanding of our Savior and our relationship with him as we examine what Jesus said about himself in his I AM statements. We will also have light suppers served from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. prior to our evening services except for on Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. These meals are great! They allow us to escape from the mid-week hurries and hassles. They give us a chance to gather together and be fed, both of food and fellowship. Please invite and bring your neighbors and friends to our suppers and to worship with you. I pray you will make every effort to be faithful in attending our mid-week services. It can make a difference in your life. It is important to set aside time for faith enrichment. Life is exceedingly busy and difficult, and Lent offers us a wonderful opportunity to renew and strengthen our faith in Jesus Christ. I am looking forward to seeing you in your Father s house during the Lenten season. Pastor Beck

Dan Zarosky, Advent s florist and owner of Daisy s flowers, has retired after over 30 years of business. We have appreciated the beautiful floral arrangements he has provided for us over the years. The Board of Deacons has not been able to find a florist who delivers and is anywhere comparable to the price range we are accustomed to. At this time, if you wish to place flowers in the church on Sundays, you will need to contact your own florist and make arrangements to have the flowers delivered to the church or bring them yourself. If you have questions, please contact Sally Knerr or Holley King. 2

I would like to thank the congregation for both financial and personal support as I continue at TLU. I am a junior this year and my major is Youth and Family Ministry. Last year I was able to volunteer with the Youth and Family director at Emanuel's Lutheran Church in Seguin. She left the church to attend seminary and this year I am on staff as a part time Youth and Family Director. This work experience is also fulfilling my internship requirement at TLU. I work approximately 20 hours per week. I directed my first Christmas Pageant on 12/21 and plan monthly family event. I'll work there this summer also and hopefully until I graduate. In February I will be attending The ELCA Network of Youth and Family Ministry directors Extravaganza 2015. I am going with other Youth and Family majors at TLU as part of our course work. I receive the scholarship from the Advent Endowment fund and I appreciate it very much. I love the cards and gifts that I receive from several members. They always seem to arrive when I need a boost and I appreciate them very much. Thank you again for all of your support. Please continue to keep me in your prayers as I continue my journey. God's Peace, Alex Norden 5

ABC Learning Center The ABC Learning Center had a great start to the New Year at the Children s Noon Year s Eve Party. The event was a successful ministry outreach to the community and we plan to make this an annual event. We now have 17 students enrolled from infants through preschool, including a couple of babies who will be born soon. Mrs. Tori and Mrs. Tarita have recently hired two compassionate ladies to help care for the children. There are lots of volunteer opportunities for those interested in coming in for an hour or so per week: Story Time: come read a story to the children once a week Music Time: come lead the children in some singing Rocking: come rock a baby to sleep Feeding: come help feed the babies and children Anyone interested in volunteering must pass a criminal background check, FBI fingerprinting, and complete some training hours. Please contact abclearning@adventhouston.org for more information. As always, thank you for your continued support and generosity.
