April 23-29, 2011 Water, juice, buttermilk sachets seized The Chennai Corporation seized drinking water, fruit juice and buttermilk sachets from about 300 shops in a number of areas of the city including T. Nagar and K. K. Nagar on April 20. The packets did not meet the mandatory requirements such as printing of manufacturing date, address of the manufacturer, batch number and expiry date, according to Corporation officials. The officials also seized over 200 drinking water cans from a lorry in Shenoy Nagar and a total of 795 kg. of food products from roadside eateries. Over 300 workers of the civic body participated in the drive. The Health Department of the civic body has sent the seized water and food products for analysis. Retail sellers and manufacturers will face action under the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act, 1954 if the results of the analysis show contamination of the samples. As contaminated water and food could cause acute diarrhoeal diseases, the civic body has taken this initiative based on complaints received from the public. According to Corporation officials, 38,750 water sachets and 203 cans, 795 packets of fruit juices and buttermilk were seized. The Corporation has started a drive to create awareness among the public of the need for precautionary measures in water and food consumption during summer. According to Dr. P. Kuganantham (Health Officer), teams of Health Department officials have been sensitised and trained to identify and seize mangoes that have been ripened artificially. In the last few years, some fruit vendors were found selling mangoes ripened using calcium carbide. The last few years have seen the Chennai Corporation conducting raids on godowns and storage points of fruits every summer. We have been adopting the practice for the last four years. We seized over 150 tonnes of mangoes in a year and over 25 tonnes of calcium carbide kept in some of the godowns, Dr. Kuganantham said. Food inspectors, along with sanitary inspectors, will conduct raids at different points across the 10 zones of the Corporation, including the wholesale market in Koyambedu. thi Sangeetha Mahotsavam and the Foundation s15 th anniversary celebrations on Sunday, April 24. P. S. Narayanaswami will preside. The four are P. B. Shrirangachari (vocalist) (resident of Soundaryavalli Flats, 1, Rajaji Street), Embar R. A team of officials of the Corporation s Health Department is in the process of identifying godowns that will stock huge quantities of mangoes. We will start picking up samples after the season peaks. The season has just begun, Dr. Kuganantham said. S. Srinivasan (President, Wholesale Fruits Commission Agents Association, Koyambedu) welcomed the Corporation s initiative to raid, seize and destroy fruits rip- Mangoes that have been ripened prematurely can be spotted easily, say officials. The smell, the sheen of the skin and the taste will easily give away the use of chemicals, if any. Premature ripening is also done for papayas and bananas, Dr. Kuganantham said. Such fruits can have serious health implications, he added. While symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhoea are common among children who eat such fruits, adults might suffer gastrointestinal probened artificially. He said, After they started the raids, there is more awareness and suppliers are forced to be cautious. That helps us ensure better quality. While a reasonable stock of mangoes produced in different parts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, including Salem, Tenkasi and Palakkad has begun making its way into the local market, wholesalers are waiting for supplies from Andhra Pradesh. It is taking time. I think it is due to climate change. What we usually receive in March comes only in May these days, Srinivasan said. Depending on the quality, one kg of the Banganapalli variety of mangoes is priced between Rs. 40 and 80. Imampasand variety costs between Rs. 80 and100. Srinivasan said, Alphonso or the variety we call Guava here comes from Ratnagiri, Pune and Mumbai. These varieties are slowly coming in and we hope to have a good season. Report: courtesy The Hindu. April 23-29, 2011 MAMBALAM TIMES Page 5 TAMIL CINEMA 75 - A LOOK BACK By RANDOR GUY THE AVM STORY - 63 The reel-life brothers in Bhai Bhai were played by the reallife brothers Ashok Kumar and Kishore Kumar, top stars of Indian Cinema. This brilliant casting by Meiyappan added extra impact and interest to the film. Ashok Kumar Ganguly was perhaps the only movie star in India to enjoy the longest innings, dating back to 1936, and was almost always at the top. Born into a well-placed lawyer s family in Bhagalpur in Bihar, he too studied law but gave up such a career to land in movies in Bombay as a Laboratory Assistant in the famous Bombay Talkies. Here he had a break as actor in the milestone movie and film classic Achhut Kanya (1936) opposite the Grand Dame of Indian Cinema, Devika Rani. The film dealt with the controversial love affair between a high-born Brahmin youth (Ashok Kumar) and a low-born untouchable girl (Devika Rani) and the complications that arise over such socially condemned relationship. However the success of Achhut Kanya did not bestow immediate stardom on Ashok Kumar. As Devika Rani was not impressed with him, he was later paired with Leela Chitnis, and his films with her - Bandhan (1941) and Naya Sansar (1941) - made him a star. Then came Kismet (1943) and its phenomenal box-office recordcreating success made Ashok Kumar a big name and an all- India star. Since then he never looked back. He turned producer and also directed a few films but he was always a star. His cinematic style of underplayed acting brought him fame and name, and his long and impressive track record made him an icon of Indian Cinema as an evergreen person. His fine films include Humayun (1945), Mahal (1949), Samadhi (1950), Afsana (1950), Deedar (1950), Chalti Ka Naam Ghadi (1958), Howrah Bridge (1958), Gumrah (1963), Oonche Log (1965), Aradhana (1965), Rajnigantha (1966) and many others. Kishore Kumar (1929-1987), his younger brother, was a multi-faced personality and had a wide range of talents. Actor, singer, music composer and producer, his fame still persists as an off-screen play-back singer. An icon of Hindi film music, he sang thousands of songs and many of them became immortal melodies of Indian Cinema. His song Roop Tera Mastana in the musical super hit Aradhana is an all time favourite of Hindi Cinema. He had lent voice for singing to almost every hero of Hindi Cinema of his time, and particularly Dev Anand! Besides the famous brothers, others in the cast of Bhai Bhai included the star-mother of Hindi Cinema, Nirupa Roy, Shama, an excellent character actor, Om Prakash and others. Shama, an attractive star, played the other woman who lures away the elder brother (Ashok Kumar) from his devoted wife (Nirupa Roy). At first the well-known Hindi actress, Meena (1920-1987), the star of the hit film Ek Thi Ladki (1950), was cast as the other woman. (After the thumping success of Ek Thi Ladki, she came to be known as the laara lappa girl, thanks to the hit number Laara lappa..., a catchy melody that made film history!) After a few reels were shot with Meena, Meiyappan and the directors Krishnan-Panju felt that she, with her rolypoly figure, was not the right choice to play the seductress! Indeed Nirupa Roy, with her good looks and slim figure, appeared more attractive than the vamp! Ever a perfectionist, Meiyappan did not hesitate to replace Meena with Shama. After the success of Bhai Bhai, Meiyappan decided to produce Hindi films regularly, and his second film in 1956 was Chori Chori. It featured the most famous pair in Indian Cinema, Raj Kapoor- Nargis. Both had come to be hailed as icons of Indian Cinema. (To be continued) Is anything interesting happening in your street or locality? Please inform MAMBALAM TIMES! NO HOLDS BARRED By M. A. SADANAND Out of an eligible vote bank of four in my family, son Devanand has been enticed as Associate Creative Director by the Bangalore office of the advertisement giant Ogilvy & Mather, whose kitty did not provide for his left index finger uglification in Chennai at their expense. May be Anna Hazare will have one more arrow to shoot at the rank commercialism of the charade of elections where there is a denial by mere office rule of one s constitutional right and duty to vote for even Boris Karloff if, in one s eyes, he is the redeemer and he hasn t heard of Spectrum G and its disciples, devotees and adherents. Somebody asked me if this Anna is related to the original Annadurai who wrested what was then Madras Presidency from the Congress and spawned iconoclastic adherents, who changed the face and politics of Tamil Nadu. But Anna imbibed tobacco snuff more than oxygen and left the throaty gang in the lurch, leaving for posterity a brainy legacy. I don t know if this Anna Hazare can hold a candle to the original Anna whom even his enemies - and there were many - deified as Arignar, the know-all. The Maharashtrian Anna (wearing the Gandhi cap, which the original Gandhi is not alleged to have worn) may be a historical fad started by a colleague who failed to copy anything peculiar to Annadurai. The quick-fix historian wanted an approximation to the Tamil legend and tweeted Anna-2 to the fore, promising a lot of fun. Stories are doing the rounds that this Hazare is closely related to one of our greatest batsmen ever, Vijay Hazare, who captained India against Australia in the 1950s. He scored a century in each innings against Australia when that country had demon bowlers like Lindwall, Miller and co.he had a funny round arm bowling action like Lasith Malinga s which was very effective.if a drop of cricket can be insinuated in any circumstance, even the great American Teacher Carnegie who wrote How to win friends and influence people would award one an honoris causa Doctorate. We have literally a million such geniuses who have been victimized into printing letter-heads sporting this fake degree. Anna 2 looks too honest to stoop to conquer. Let s leave that to politicians, what?
