Climbing Kilimanjaro 1 There are different ways of training to climb Kilimanjaro, Africa s highest mountain. (5,895 meters or 19,341 feet above sea level). Nurse Nicky Bennett-Rees has been walking across London every day from her flat to Great Ormond Street Hospital. Then, once her night shift nursing 5 sick children is over, she runs the eight kilometers back home. I ve even changed my diet, she explained. Now it s steak, eggs and as much fresh food as I can eat. What s it all for? Nicky is taking part in a sponsored climb at the beginning of September to raise money for an extension to the children s ward at her 10 hospital. She and nine others will spend five days climbing up and down Kilimanjaro s 5,894 meters. This is a final attempt to raise the 250,000 euros needed to build accommodation for the families of children desperately ill in hospital. They have been raising the money for five years, and have so far collected nearly 200,000 euros. 15 All the members of the climb have had major surgery at some time in their lives, but there are no doubts about their fitness. It s great to be able to do something like this and at the same time make money for a worthwhile cause, added Terry Allen, the group s coach, who has more than 15 years of experience in leading climbers to Africa s highest peak. Talking about Experience 1 Have you ever used a proverb or a saying to help you express your ideas and enrich your language? Let's say you want to ask your friend to stop making trouble. You can tell her to "stop making waves." If you want to say that someone does things his 5 own way without taking other people into consideration, you can say "He is marching to the beat of his own drums." A proverb is a simple and concrete saying popularly known and repeated, which expresses truth, wisdom, or a moral based on common sense. Civilization since ancient Egypt has collected proverbs. The Proverbs of 10 Alfred, written in the 12th century is one of the earliest-known English collections of proverbs. Poor Richard's, written in 1757 by Benjamin Franklin, is probably the most well-known collection of proverbs in North America. One of Franklin's most popular proverbs is: "We do not stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing." Most sayings are usually 15 ascribed to a specific culture, but sayings become universal through use. You often hear people comment: "We have the same saying in our country or in our language." Proverbs and sayings can also be categorized by their origins. There are Irish sayings such as: "The one who gossips with you will gossip of you." 20 Chinese sayings, such as: "Once bitten by a snake, you are even frightened Module C 17

by a rope." You can also find African sayings, as well as innumerable ancient Greek and Latin sayings and, of course, Biblical ones. There is undoubtedly a saying for every occasion; therefore it isn't difficult to find a saying to fit each situation you may come across. So when you want 25 to say it forcefully, say it with a saying. Keep looking for sayings and proverbs because "Knowledge in youth is wisdom in age." 18 Module C צילום ו/או העתקה מספר זה הנו מעשה לא חינוכי המהווה עבירה פלילית.

Anne Frank Over one million children under the age of sixteen were killed in the 5 Holocaust. Anne Frank was one of them. Anne Frank was born on June 12, 1929, in Germany. Because of Hitler s persecutions of Jews, Anne and her family moved to Amsterdam and were forced to go into hiding. Together with other Jewish families, they spent 25 months in a secret apartment above her father s office. 10 Anne received a diary for her thirteenth birthday, which she named "Kitty." Here is what she wrote on that day: On Friday, June 12th, I woke up at six o'clock, and no wonder; it was my birthday... Soon after seven I went to Mummy and Daddy and then to the sitting room to undo my presents. The first to greet me was you the nicest 15 of all. Anne chronicled the daily events inside the secret apartment, describing the personalities and the relationships of its inhabitants and recording her own feelings. On June 20, 1942, Anne confided in her diary: 20 But it's the same with all my friends, just fun and joking, nothing more. I can never bring myself to talk of anything outside the common round... 22 Module C צילום ו/או העתקה מספר זה הנו מעשה לא חינוכי המהווה עבירה פלילית.

Anne s last entry was on August 1, 1944. After being betrayed to the Nazis, Anne, her family, and the others who lived with them were arrested and deported to Nazi concentration camps. Nine months after she was arrested, 25 Anne Frank died of typhus at the concentration camp Bergen-Belsen in Germany. She was only fifteen years old. The only survivor was Otto Frank, her father. He returned to Amsterdam after the War in 1945. Test 4 ACCESS TO INFORMATION FROM WRITTEN TEXTS (100 points) הבנת הנקרא )100 נקודות( קרא בעיון את הקטע שלפניך, וענה על השאלות שלאחריו. Read the article below and then answer questions 1-10. Social Networking 1 Do you have cyber-friends? Here at the Internet Conference in Rome this is the main issue of discussion. Giovanni Rolando is reporting: The history of the Internet, as a global inter-network, goes back to the 1990s. At that time, it started to spread around the world and it got a big 5 hand. It was referred to as the "Web," or WWW, an abbreviation of the "World Wide Web." What could you do then? You became accustomed to words such as "browse" and "site," you learned the term "surf the net," and you could browse for content by reading articles and getting information on specific subjects. 10 Later on, you were able to play games and listen to music. Some people even started to create their own sites. However, it was difficult and took a long time to create one page. Moreover, the person who wanted to do this had to learn a special web language called HTML. In the years that followed, it became easier when "blogs" were introduced. 15 Nowadays, everyone can open his or her own online diary and add commentary, descriptions of events, or other material, such as photographs or videos. In addition, people can comment in an interactive way. A tremendous change is currently taking place. The Internet has become a place for social networking. The most popular sites are Myspace, which is 20 especially trendy among adolescents and Facebook, which is also well-liked among adults. Module C 27

Those sites do not provide content and information; they are a platform for interaction. They help people meet, discuss, and communicate online. They focus on building online communities of people who share whatever it is they 25 love including music, photos, images, and videos. People interact via e-mails, instant messaging services, and chats. What is there in store for us? What innovations are we going to see in the coming years? We are staying patiently in front of our computers to wait and see! 28 Module C צילום ו/או העתקה מספר זה הנו מעשה לא חינוכי המהווה עבירה פלילית.
