Outliving Horror for 70 Years and Never Forgetting At Auschwitz-Birkenau, Holocaust Survivors, Ever Dwindling in Number, Gather to Remember By JOANNA BERENDTJAN. 27, 2015 OSWIECIM, Poland More than 3,000 guests, including Holocaust survivors and foreign dignitaries, gathered on Tuesday at a site marking one of history s biggest horrors, the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camps in Poland, which were liberated by Soviet troops 70 years ago in the closing months of World War II. The anniversary takes place at a time when reports of anti-semitism are increasing across Europe. One Jewish organization said in a recent report that the incidence of anti-semitic acts in France had doubled over the past year. Jews are targeted in Europe once again because they are Jews, Ronald S. Lauder, president of the World Jewish Congress and a major contributor to the preservation of the museum complex, said at the ceremony. Mr. Lauder, 70, said the recent terrorist attacks in Paris, including one at a kosher supermarket, had prompted him to radically change the remarks he intended to deliver. He called on the world leaders in the audience to adopt policies of zero tolerance toward hatred of any kind. Unless this is checked right now, it will be too late, he said. http://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/28/world/europe/holocaust-survivors-ever-dwindling-in-number-gather-at-auschwitzfor-memorial.html?_r=0

On Auschwitz anniversary, leaderwarns Jews again targets Published January 27, 2015, Associated Press BRZEZINKA, Poland A Jewish leader stood Tuesday before 300 survivors of the Nazis' most notorious death camp and asked world leaders to prevent another Auschwitz, warning of a rise of anti-semitism that has made many Jews fearful of walking the streets, and is causing many to flee Europe. Ronald Lauder, the president of the World Jewish Congress, made his bleak assessment on the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, speaking next to the gate and the railroad tracks that marked the last journey for more than a million people murdered at Auschwitz-Birkenau. He said his speech was shaped by the recent terrorist attacks in France that targeted Jews and newspaper satirists. "For a time, we thought that the hatred of Jews had finally been eradicated. But slowly the demonization of Jews started to come back," Lauder said. "Once again, young Jewish boys are afraid to wear yarmulkes on the streets of Paris and Budapest and London. Once again, Jewish businesses are targeted. And once again, Jewish families are fleeing Europe." http://www.foxnews.com/world/2015/01/27/leaders-survivors-mark-70th-anniversary-auschwitz-liberation-by-sovietsbut/

Auschwitz liberation 70th anniversary: Woman sent to three Nazi death camps describes surviving gas chamber THE INDEPENDENT, UK 28 JANUARY 2015KASHMIRA GANDER A grandmother who survived being held in no less than three Nazi concentration camps as a young woman, has spoken of how she managed to escape a gas chamber. Ronald Lauder, president of the World Jewish Congress, cites the massacres in Paris, which targeted Jews and newspaper satirists, as proof of growing hatred and extremism. "Shortly after World War II, after we saw the reality of Auschwitz and the other death camps, no normal person wanted to be associated with the anti-semitism of the Nazis," Lauder said. "But, as the Holocaust grows more distant and survivors disappear, extremists grow more bold in targeting Jews. Stoked by a false narrative that blames Israel for a litany of the world's problems, anti- Semitism is resurgent and deadly." http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/auschwitz-liberation-70th-anniversarywoman-sent-to-three-nazi-death-camps-describes-surviving-gas-chamber-10003895.html

Auschwitz anniversary a reminder of the danger of staying silent BY CHRISTIAN LOWEWARSAW Mon Dec 29, 2014 8:43am GMT (Reuters) - Next month's 70th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz death camp is a reminder, at a time when anti-semitism is on the rise again, of what happens when the world stays silent about persecution, the president of the World Jewish Congress said. Ronald S. Lauder told Reuters in an interview anti-semitism had reached levels not seen since World War Two, driven by Islamist extremists using hatred of Jews as a way to attackisrael, and by far-right nationalists in Europe. He said the commemorations on Jan. 27 to mark the day Soviet troops liberated Auschwitz in 1945 would be the last major anniversary when survivors would be able to attend in numbers. The youngest are now in their 70s. "I believe it is a good reminder to people of what happens when we remain silent, and the world was silent when Hitler was starting, the world was silent when Jews were taken away, the world was silent at Kristallnacht and in many ways, although many people knew what was happening in the concentration camps, it was not publicised," Lauder said. "After World War Two, into the 50s, 60s and 70s, the type of anti-semitism we see today, nobody would ever have thought of happening. But as time has gone on and generations have passed, we see the rise of anti-semitism." "Hopefully this commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the freeing of Auschwitz, and the ceremonies that will take place, may remind the world what it is happens when anti-semitism is allowed to run wild, so to speak." At the Auschwitz camp, in southern Poland, the Nazis killed some 1.5 million people between 1940 and 1945, most of them Jews. Lauder, who has helped fund conservation efforts to preserve artefacts at Auschwitz including inmates' hair and shoes, said the World Jewish Congress would this year bring about 100 survivors and their families to Poland to take part in the commemorations. He said Hungary, where the far-right Jobbik party is now the second biggest political force, was one example of a European country where a political party was fanning anti-semitism. "The government will talk about 'There is no place for anti-semitism in the world,' but that is not necessarily speeches being made inside Hungary," Lauder said. "There is a total disconnect between what they say for external consumption and internal consumption." http://uk.reuters.com/article/2014/12/29/uk-auschwitz-anniversary-lauder-intervie-idukkbn0k70g820141229

The Voices of Auschwitz Written by Anthony Faiola, Ruth Eglash, Michelle Boorstein Published on January 23, 2015 There are fewer and fewer of those who still remember. The Soviet army entered Auschwitz the network of extermination camps operated by Nazi Germany in occupied Poland on Jan. 27, 1945, liberating the most notorious site of the Holocaust. In the decades since, groups of survivors have gathered to honor that day including an annual remembrance at Auschwitz itself. This year, they mark the 70th anniversary of liberation on Tuesday a day that, for a significant portion of remaining survivors, may be the last major remembrance of their lifetimes. The numbers themselves tell the story. A decade ago, 1,500 survivors traveled to Auschwitz in southern Poland to mark the 60th anniversary. This year, organizers are expecting 300 or so. This is the last big one for many of the survivors, said Ronald Lauder, billionaire philanthropist and president of the World Jewish Congress, which is financing the travel expenses for more than 100 survivors. By the time we reach the 75th anniversary, there may be almost no survivors left. But they are coming now, because they want to bear witness, to stand there and say, we outlasted Hitler. We made it. The survivors partly carry a legacy of horror, memories of the brutality of a labor prison that, by September of 1941, became an assembly line of death where more than 1 million would perish at the hands of the Third Reich. The vast majority of the victims were the Jews of Europe, subjected to Adolf Hitler s Final Solution. But others also deemed outside the racial and ideological lines of the Nazis also died. Ethnic Roma. Gays. Jehovah s Witnesses. Polish prisoners of war. The survivors carry another legacy as well, one even more relevant: The power of human will to persevere. What follows are the tales of four survivors of Auschwitz, since resettled in the United States, Israel, France and southern Germany. Their recollections come amid what for some is a new period of uncertainty. In France home of 89-year-old survivor Raphael Esrail the anniversary comes less than three weeks after a terrorist assault on a kosher grocery store in Paris in which four people lost their lives. In Israel, Marta Wise, an 80-year-old survivor, sees little cause for optimism in her adopted home or elsewhere. And in the United States, survivor Anna Ornstein, an 87-year-old psychoanalyst who has spent a lifetime treating children in trauma, says humanity has not learned from the Holocaust, as genocide has continued in many parts of the world. http://www.washingtonpost.com/sf/world/2015/01/23/with-fewer-voices-auschwitz-survivors-speak/

Auschwitz liberation ceremony will be the last for many survivors present European leaders and royalty gather for 70 th anniversary amid unprecedented security and rise in antisemitism Kate Connolly Oswiecim 27 January 201500.00 EST Almost 300 survivors of the Nazi German concentration and extermination camps at Auschwitz gather on Tuesday to mark the 70th anniversary of their liberation, in what for many will be the last such commemoration. This is the last time we ll have such a prominent survivor presence, so we ve made a special effort to get them here, Ronald Lauder, the president of the World Jewish Congress, which is bringing 100 of the survivors, told the Guardian. Many of them will no longer be with us for the 75th. Lauder, a billionaire philanthropist who has raised millions for the conservation of the remains of Auschwitz, said the anniversary, coming at a moment when anti-semitism is on the rise, was a reminder of the dangers when the world failed to speak up about persecution. It s happening to Christians now right across the Middle East and Africa, and the dangers of not speaking up have been made clear since the Paris attacks, when innocent people were gunned down mercilessly while shopping for food for the Shabbat [Jewish Sabbath]. The survivors I have spoken to say they felt it was just a matter of time before anti-semitism came back, with the same virulent words and the same form of attack. http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/jan/27/auschwitz-holocaust-survivors-liberation-70-anniversary-nazi-poland

Survivor Speaks Out at Museum on Holocaust Remembrance Day WNEW s Cameron Thompson contributed to this report. January 27, 2015 2:10 PM LANHAM, Md. (WNEW/AP) In observance of International Holocaust Remembrance Day on Tuesday, the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. held a special commemoration. Today marks 70 years since the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration camp, by the Soviet Army on January 27, 1945. Dozens gathered for the remembrance ceremony that featured testimony from a Holocaust survivor, a musical performance, and a memorial candle lighting in the Museum s Hall of Remembrance. Holocaust survivors were joined by ambassadors and other diplomats from many nations. The United Nations established International Holocaust Remembrance Day in 2005 as an annual day to honor the memory of the six million Jews murdered in the Holocaust. WNEW reporter Cameron Thompson spoke with survivor Ruth Cohen, who was sent there at age 14. She was eventually liberated two days before the war from a camp in Holysov, Czechoslovakia. It cannot happen again. We can t forget what happened. The message is always the same. Don t forget and don t do it, Ruth told Cam. Holocaust survivors gather to mark 1945 liberation from Auschwitz By GABRIEL ROM JANUARY 27, 2015 Roman Kent paused briefly, as if he still needed convincing. You are in the German concentration camp in Auschwitz, he bluntly told the audience words that, even after seven decades, still have the power to evoke horror. Kent, a former Auschwitz inmate who was born in Poland, was among nearly 300 Holocaust survivors who joined international leaders Tuesday at the former Nazi-run death camps at Auschwitz-Birkenau to commemorate the 70th anniversary of their liberation. Polish President BronislawKomorowski and American philanthropist Ronald Lauder drew connections between past and present. Komorowski cited author and former Auschwitz inmate Elie Wiesel, who wrote that to forget the dead would be akin to killing them a second time. Lauder warned of increasing anti-semitism in Europe. Once again, young Jewish boys are afraid to wear yarmulkes on the streets of Paris, London, Budapest and even Berlin, he said. http://www.latimes.com/world/europe/la-fg-auschwitz-70-years-since-liberation-20150127-story.html

'We Cannot Forget': Survivors Return to Auschwitz on Liberation Anniversary BY BILL NEELY JANUARY 27, 2015 AUSCHWITZ, Poland They gathered at the end of railway line at Auschwitz, as they had done more than 70 years ago. The tracks separated the survivors in two, as they had once separated those who would live from those who would go to the gas chambers a hundred yards away and die, often within an hour. They were here nearly three hundred of them in the bitter cold and snow to remember the day exactly 70 years ago when Nazi rule here ended and the camp was liberated. They sat on the very ground where the ashes of a million Jews are buried. They are not yet free from their memories. Many who sat before the so-called Death Gate here where the selections for life or death took place have deep worries about the status of Jews in Europe today. Ronald Lauder, an American philanthropist, told the audience that "Jews are targeted in Europe once again because they're Jews... it looks more like 1933 than 2015. Anti-Semitism will grow if no one speaks out." Which is precisely why the survivors are here. They are what the Polish President BronislawKomorowski called "the guardians of the memories of Auschwitz." But only by passing on their memories to the next generation do they feel their lives will have been saved for a reason. As Marcel Tuchman, another American survivor from New York, told me, "remember, remember, remember and continue telling the story... that's what we must do. Tears are not enough." http://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/we-cannot-forget-survivors-return-auschwitz-liberation-anniversary-n294606

Lauder, Spielberg warn of rising anti- Semitism News Brief, January 27, 2015 5:08am KRAKOW, Poland (JTA) European leaders must do more to combat rising anti-semitism on their home turf, Jewish leaders urged on the eve of the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. Governments must adopt a zero tolerance policy toward preachers of hate and importers of jihad, World Jewish Congress President Ronald Lauder told reporters. Filmmaker Stephen Spielberg told some 100 Holocaust survivors and their companions in Krakow that we are once again facing the perennial demons of intolerance. Lauder said he had been hearing from worried Jews across Europe, especially following the rash of terrorist attacks on Jewish targets in Belgium and this month in France. The Jewish population is frightened, he said. Religious Jews are afraid of getting attacked in the street for wearing a yarmulke. Jews want to leave Europe because they feel their governments are not protecting them. Lauder called for the deportation of leaders who promulgate hate speech and the closing of schools that teach hateful messages. European citizens who go abroad to receive Islamist military training, he said, are not learning how to make couscous. They should lose their passports. Michael Schudrich, the chief rabbi of Poland, told JTA that unlike in Western Europe, jihadists have not posed a problem in Poland. He also said that classic Catholic anti-semitism has greatly decreased thanks to the efforts of the late Pope John Paul II. But Schudrich said that in addition to the terrorist threat, there is an increased willingness in Western Europe to express traditional anti-semitism. It s as if at some level the expiration date of the Holocaust is up, he said. http://www.jta.org/2015/01/27/news-opinion/world/auto-draft-32

On Auschwitz anniversary, leader warns Jews again targets BY VANESSA GERAASSOCIATED PRESS 01/28/2015 3:32 AM BRZEZINKA, POLAND - A Jewish leader stood before 300 survivors of the Nazis' most notorious death camp on Tuesday and asked world leaders to prevent another Auschwitz, warning of a rise of anti-semitism that has made many Jews fearful of walking the streets, and is causing many to flee Europe. The recent attack in Paris, in which four Jews were killed in a kosher supermarket, is not the first deadly attack on Jews in recent years. Last May a shooting killed four people at the Jewish Museum in Brussels and in 2012 a rabbi and three children were murdered in the French city of Toulouse. Europe also saw a spasm of anti-semitism last summer during the war in Gaza, with protests in Paris turning violent and other hostility across the continent. "This vilification of Israel, the only Jewish state on earth, quickly became an opportunity to attack Jews," Lauder said. "Much of this came from the Middle East, but it has found fertile ground throughout the world." http://www.miamiherald.com/news/nation-world/article8220618.html

On Auschwitz anniversary, Jewish leader warns that Jews are again being demonized Article by: VANESSA GERA, Associated Press Updated: January 27, 2015-11:06 PM BRZEZINKA, Poland A Jewish leader stood before 300 survivors of the Nazis' most notorious death camp on Tuesday and asked world leaders to prevent another Auschwitz, warning of a rise of anti- Semitism that has made many Jews fearful of walking the streets, and is causing many to flee Europe. And once again, Jewish families are fleeing Europe." The recent attack in Paris, in which four Jews were killed in a kosher supermarket, is not the first deadly attack on Jews in recent years. "Much of this came from the Middle East, but it has found fertile ground throughout the world." http://www.startribune.com/world/289884731.html?page=1&c=y

For Auschwitz Museum, a Time of Great Change By RICK LYMANJAN. 23, 2015 OSWIECIM, Poland For what is likely to be the last time, a large number of the survivors of the Nazi concentration camps at Auschwitz will gather next week under an expansive tent, surrounded by royalty and heads of state, to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the liberation of those held there at the end of World War II. Auschwitz is important because it was ground zero of what the Nazis did, said Ronald S. Lauder, president of the World Jewish Congress and a major contributor to the preservation of the museum complex. And it is important because anti-semitism is like a virus. You think it goes away but then it s coming back. Right now, it is coming back very strongly. It is very hard to pass the baton to a new generation, people who are living in different circumstances in a new century, Mr. Lauder said. Your parents may want to pass the torch to you, but it is hard to take up the cause of their life. And in many cases now, we are talking about the grandchildren of survivors. http://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/24/world/europe/for-auschwitz-museum-and-survivors-a-momentof-passage.html?_r=2

Holocaust Survivors Return to Auschwitz to Mark 70 Years Anav Silverman / Tazpit News Agency January 27, 2015 AUSCHWITZ, POLAND Fifteen Auschwitz survivors, aged 80-94, recently returned to the infamous death camp some for the first time. To mark the 70th anniversary of the Auschwitz liberation on January 27, the World Jewish Congress (WJC) and the USC Shoah Foundation organized the historic visit of the survivors and their offspring, who came from across the world. I deeply admire the courage of these survivors, said Ron Lauder, WJC President, who joined the survivors. For some of them, this was the first time they returned to the place of their nightmares. Each survivor is a living testament to the triumph of good over evil, of life over death, and they are my heroes. Lauder has been involved in the restoration and preservation of Auschwitz-Birkenau for more than 20 years, and has helped to raise $40 million from 19 countries to ensure that the camp forever be preserved for future generations. He also financed the creation of the conservation laboratory at the Auschwitz Memorial, which preserves every shoe, every document, and every building that remained at the site. The World Jewish Congress is humbled and honored that so many of these aging survivors will travel with us to Auschwitz, said Robert Singer, Chief Executive Officer of the WJC. This may be the last major anniversary we will be able to remember with those who experienced the Holocaust firsthand. From this historic event, their voices will echo across the generations. http://www.algemeiner.com/2015/01/27/holocaust-survivors-return-to-auschwitz-to-mark-70-years/

Industry heavyweights support Auschwitz 70th anniversary commemoration Saturday, January 24, 2015ByCynthia Littleton Discovery Communications CEO David Zaslav and Steven Spielberg are heading to Poland this weekend to take part in the ceremony marking the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. Zaslav, Spielberg and a number of other industry heavyweights have quietly worked with Spielberg's USC Shoah Foundation, the Polish government and the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum to bring a delegation of 100 Auschwitz survivors and their families to take part in the solemn ceremony on Jan. 27. The 70th anniversary commemoration is expected to be the last time that a large group of Auschwitz survivors will be able to make the trip to the site of the Nazi concentration camp, because of their advancing years. As such, Zaslav and Spielberg recognized the importance of making sure that their voices were heard and that their families had the opportunity to share in the experience. Zaslav and Spielberg spearheaded the fundraising effort to cover the costs of the trip. The group will include 25 teachers from around the world who will take part in a four-day seminar on how to teach middle and high school students about the influence of genocide and hate on world history. Zaslav is chair of the Auschwitz: The Past is Present Committee, and he led the core leadership team comprised of Spielberg, Len Blavatnik, HaimSaban, Starbucks founder Howard Schultz, investor Joel Citron, attorney Stephen A. Cozen, World Jewish Congress president Ronald S. Lauder and tech mogul Yuri Milner. Dwindling Group of Survivors to Mark Auschwitz 70 Years On OSWIECIM, Poland Jan 26, 2015, 11:03 AM ET By VANESSA GERA Associated Press A decade ago, 1,500 Holocaust survivors traveled to Auschwitz to mark the 60th anniversary of the death camp's liberation. On Tuesday, for the 70th anniversary, organizers are expecting 300, the youngest in their 70s. "In 10 years there might be just one," said Zygmunt Shipper, an 85-year-old survivor who will attend the event in southern Poland to pay homage to the millions killed by the Third Reich. In recent years, Shipper has been traveling around Britain to share his story with school groups, hoping to reach as many people as he can while he has the strength. But as the world moves inevitably closer to a post-survivor era, some Jewish leaders fear that people are already starting to forget. And they warn that the anti-semitic hatred and violence that are on the rise, particularly in Europe, could partly be linked to fading memories of the Holocaust. Ronald Lauder, president of the World Jewish Congress, says that the recent massacres in Paris, which targeted Jews and newspaper satirists, are proof of growing hatred and extremism. It's a message he plans to stress in a speech Tuesday at the former site of Auschwitz-Birkenau, where the Nazis killed more than 1.1 million people, most of them Jews. Stoked by a false narrative that blames Israel for a litany of the world's problems, anti-semitism is resurgent and deadly." http://abcnews.go.com/international/wirestory/dwindling-group-survivors-mark-auschwitz-70-years- 28479414

Survivors gather for historic Auschwitz anniversary JTA, Tuesday, January 27, 2015 KRAKOW, Poland Holocaust survivors gathered in Krakow on the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz amid unease regarding the safety of Jews in Europe. Some 300 survivors from 19 countries each with a child, grandchild or companion are expected to attend official ceremonies on Jan. 27 at the site of the former concentration camp in Oswiecim. The journeys of the guests most of them in their 80s and 90s were sponsored by the World Jewish Congress and the USC Shoah Foundation. Ronald Lauder, president of the WJC, is to address the ceremony, which was organized by the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum and the International Auschwitz Council. Among the thousands of expected guests are state leaders as well as film director Steven Spielberg, founding chair of the Shoah Foundation, Israeli-American businessman HaimSaban and others. European leaders must do more to combat rising anti-semitism on their home turf, Lauder told reporters in Krakow, saying governments must adopt a zero tolerance policy toward preachers of hate and importers of jihad. Spielberg told some 100 Holocaust survivors and their companions in Krakow that we are once again facing the perennial demons of intolerance. They should lose their passports. http://www.cjnews.com/opinions/letters?q=node/135418

Canadians Return To Auschwitz For First Time Since Holocaust CP By Liam Casey, The Canadian Press Posted: 01/26/2015 3:43 pm EST Updated: 01/27/2015 10:00 am EST A Canadian woman who was one of the few children to come out of Auschwitz alive on liberation day in 1945 has returned to the infamous Nazi death camp for the first time. On Monday she reunited with three of the women who were captured in the black-and-white photo taken by Alexander Vorontsov, a Red Army combat photographer, shortly after the camp's liberation. She posed with the others for a new photo at the hotel in Krakow between a slew of events for more than 100 survivors. In one photograph, she lifted her sleeve to show the prisoner number the Nazis tattooed on her skin upon entering Auschwitz. It mimics the original image in which she instinctively showed her tattoo to the arriving soldiers. "It's amazing going from a day that really was a living nightmare to her rejoicing and laughing and smiling and sharing stories," Shulman said. Ronald Lauder, the president of the World Jewish Congress, which is hosting the commemoration along with the USC Shoah Foundation, said hatred in the world remains strong. "Shortly after World War II, after we saw the reality of Auschwitz and the other death camps, no normal person wanted to be associated with the anti-semitism of the Nazis," Lauder said. Holocaust Memorial Day: Auschwitz Survivors Return 70 Years After Liberation By Zoe Mintz January 27 2015 10:24 AM In the weeks after his liberation from Nazi captivity, Israel Arbeiter would wake up crying and screaming. In the five years he spent in concentration camps, including Auschwitz, his family was murdered, his possessions were gone -- and now he had nowhere to go. Ronald Lauder, president of the World Jewish Congress, will speak at the ceremony along with three survivors. While his speech will focus on the lessons of the Holocaust, Lauder said he could not ignore the reality for many European Jews -- particularly since the Jan. 9 attack at a kosher supermarket in Paris that left four people dead. To rehash Auschwitz without talking about Paris and anti-semitism would be a mistake, Lauder said. And this year s anniversary is particularly important, Lauder said. For millions of survivors, this is the last chance to be there, because the next one will be the 75th and very few will be around, he said. http://www.ibtimes.com/holocaust-memorial-day-auschwitz-survivors-return-70-years-after-liberation- 1796104

Holocaust Memorial Day: How Auschwitz was remembered Elderly Holocaust survivors returned to the infamous Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp 70 years after it was liberated, to bear witness to one of history's worst atrocities for what may be their last time - and urge the world never to forget By Telegraph video, video source APTN 6:48PM GMT 27 Jan 2015 300 Holocaust survivors gathered with world leaders on Tuesday under an enormous tent over the gate and railroad tracks that marked the last journey for more than a million people murdered by the Nazis at Auschwitz-Birkenau. The commemorations marking the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz were tinged with a sense of melancholy. It is expected to be the last major anniversary that a significant number of survivors will be strong enough to attend. And a sense of anxiety prevailed at the growing anti-semitism and radicalism in Europe and the Middle East. Among those in attendance were French President Francois Hollande, whose nation was the recent victim of attacks that targeted Jews and newspaper satirists. Participants also included the presidents of Germany and Austria, the perpetrator nations that have spent decades atoning for their sins, as well as Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, a sign of Poland's strong support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. Auschwitz survivor HalinaBirenbaum sounded a warning to all present, saying: "If nobody stops it, this Auschwitz Birkenau evil, it lingers and its re-born into growing terror, in anti-semitism and racism." Another survivor, Roman Kent, became emotional as he issued a plea to world leaders to remember the atrocities and fight for tolerance. "We do not want our past to be our children's future," he said to applause, fighting back tears. And president of the World Jewish Congress Ronald Lauder warned of a new wave of anti-semitism, saying: "Jews are targeted in Europe once again because they are Jews." http://www.telegraph.co.uk/history/world-war-two/11373108/holocaust-memorial-day-how-auschwitz-wasremembered.html

Survivors Return to Auschwitz for 70th Anniversary of Liberation BY SANDRA SOBIERAJ WESTFALL 01/27/2015 AT 03:30 PM EST The presidents of Germany and France, along with prominent activists likesteven Spielberg, who directed the 1993 Holocaust film Schindler's List, joined some 300 survivors of the Nazi camp for ceremonies there. They lit candles at the bullet-hole-ridden "Death Wall" where prisoners were once executed. Between 1940 and the camp's liberation in 1945, some 1.1 million people, most of them Jews, were killed at that wall or in the camp's gas chambers. Those who escaped death were forced, often starving, into slave labor. All spoke Tuesday of the need to be vigilant against hatred. "We survivors do not want our past to be our children's future," survivor Roman Kent, 86, said at the ceremony. Added World Jewish Congress president Ronald S. Lauder: "World silence led to Auschwitz. Do not let this happen again." http://www.people.com/article/auschwitz-survivors-mark-70th-anniversary-of-liberation

Ronald Lauder urges world leaders to prevent 'another Auschwitz', 'Once again, young Jewish boys are afraid to wear kippahs on the streets of Paris and Budapest and London' European Jewish Press, Jan. 28, 2015 "Once again, young Jewish boys are afraid to wear kippahs on the streets of Paris and Budapest and London. Once again, Jewish businesses are targeted. And once again, Jewish families are fleeing Europe," said World Jewish Congress (WJC) President Ronald Lauder in a speech Tuesday at the site of the former Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp in the presence of 300 Holocaust survivors. He urged world leaders who attended a ceremony marking the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the camp to prevent another Auschwitz, warning of a rise of anti-semitism that has made many Jews fearful of walking the streets and is causing many to question their future in Europe or to already leave the continent. Some 1.3 million people, mostly Jews, were exterminated by the Nazis between 1940 and 1945. He said he changed his speech after the recent terrorist attacks in Paris in which four Jews were killed in a kosher supermarket by an Islamist terrorist and that also targeted newspaper satirists. "For a time, we thought that the hatred of Jews had finally been eradicated. But slowly the demonization of Jews started to come back," Lauder said. The recent attack against the Hyper Cacher is not the first deadly attack on Jews in recent years. Last May another Islamist gunman killed four people at the Jewish Museum in Brussels and in 2012 a rabbi and three children were murdered in a Jewish school in the French city of Toulouse. Europe also saw a spasm of anti-semitism last summer during the war in Gaza, with protests in Paris turning violent and other hostility across the continent. "This vilification of Israel, the only Jewish state on earth, quickly became an opportunity to attack Jews," Lauder said. "Much of this came from the Middle East, but it has found fertile ground throughout the world." Anti-Semitism is driven by Islamist extremist using hatred of Jews as a way to attack Israel, and by extreme-right nationalists in Europe. The WJC leader, who has said anti-semitism had reached levels not seen since World War II, urged European leaders to do more to combat rising anti-semitism and to adopt a zero tolerance policy on their home turf. The Jewish population is frightened, Lauder said, stressing that religious Jews are afraid of getting attacked in the street for wearing a kippa. Jews want to leave Europe because they feel their governments are not protecting them. Once again, young Jewish boys are afraid to wear yarmulkes on the streets of Paris and Budapest and London. Once again, Lauder implored, Jewish businesses are targeted. Holocaust commemorations mark 70th anniversary of Auschwitz liberation - as it happened UK Telegraph, Jan. 27, 2015 Ronald Lauder, a US-Jewish businessman and philanthropist, told the audience at Auschwitz: "Anti- Semitism will grow if no one speaks out. "It looks more like 1933 than 2015." On anti-semitism and Israel, Mr. Lauder said: "For decades the world has been fed lies about Israel... that Israel has no right to exist. Auschwitz survivors meet on 70th anniversary of liberation SF Gate/SF Chronicle (NY Times), Jan. 27, 2015 Jews are targeted in Europe once again because they are Jews, Ronald Lauder, president of the World Jewish Congress and a major contributor to the preservation of the museum complex, said at the ceremony. Lauder, 70, said the recent terrorist attacks in Paris, including at a kosher supermarket, had prompted him to radically change the remarks he intended to deliver. He called on the world leaders in the audience to adopt policies of zero tolerance toward hatred of any kind. Unless this is checked right now, it will be too late, he said. http://www.sfgate.com/world/article/auschwitz-survivors-meet-on-70th-anniversary-of-6044008.php

On Auschwitz anniversary, Jewish leader warns that Jews are again being demonized U.S. News & World Report (AP), Jan. 27, 2015 A Jewish leader stood before 300 survivors of the Nazis' most notorious death camp on Tuesday and asked world leaders to prevent another Auschwitz, warning of a rise of anti-semitism that has made many Jews fearful of walking the streets, and is causing many to flee Europe. And once again, Jewish families are fleeing Europe." http://www.usnews.com/news/world/articles/2015/01/27/leaders-mark-auschwitz-liberation-70-yearson-without-putin

Holocaust Survivors Return to Auschwitz to Mark 70 Years of Liberation The Jewish Press, Jan. 27, 2015 I deeply admire the courage of these survivors, said Ron Lauder, WJC President, who joined the survivors today at Auschwitz. For some of them, this was the first time they returned to the place of their nightmares. Each survivor is a living testament to the triumph of good over evil, of life over death, and they are my heroes. Lauder has been involved in the restoration and preservation of Auschwitz-Birkenau for more than 20 years and has helped to raise $40 million from 19 countries to ensure that the camp forever be preserved for future generations. He also financed the creation of the conservation laboratory at the Auschwitz Memorial, which preserves every shoe, every document, and every building that remained at the site. http://www.jewishpress.com/news/breaking-news/holocaust-survivors-return-to-auschwitz-to-mark- 70-years-of-liberation/2015/01/27/

Dwindling Group of Survivors to Mark Auschwitz 70 Years On ABC News online (AP), Jan. 27, 2015 Ronald Lauder, president of the World Jewish Congress, says that the recent massacres in Paris, which targeted Jews and newspaper satirists, are proof of growing hatred and extremism. It's a message he plans to stress in a speech Tuesday at the former site of Auschwitz-Birkenau, where the Nazis killed more than 1.1 million people, most of them Jews. Stoked by a false narrative that blames Israel for a litany of the world's problems, anti-semitism is resurgent and deadly." http://abcnews.go.com/international/wirestory/dwindling-group-survivors-mark-auschwitz-70-years- 28479414

World marks 70 years since Auschwitz s liberation The Jerusalem Post, Jan. 27, 2015 You are witnesses. You serve as our eyes and memory to what happened here, said World Jewish Congress president Ronald Lauder. The survivors, he asserted, represent the victory of light over darkness, and while those who were not part of the Holocaust cannot understand what its victims endured, we do know [that] the way you lived your lives after you were liberated teaches us an important lesson in human dignity. http://www.jpost.com/diaspora/world-marks-70-years-since-auschwitzs-liberation-389061

Holocaust Memorial Day: Auschwitz Survivors Return 70 Years After Liberation International Business Times (IBT), Jan. 27, 2015 Ronald Lauder, president of the World Jewish Congress, will speak at the ceremony along with three survivors.

Survivors return to Auschwitz determined to share their stories JTA, Jan. 27. 2015 At the event, Ronald Lauder, president of the World Jewish Congress, addressed the crowd. Auschwitz never goes away, he said. This awful place stands as a reminder that propaganda leads to anti-semitism that anti-semitism will grow if nobody speaks out. Europe also saw a spasm of anti-semitism last summer during the war in Gaza, with protests in Paris turning violent and other hostility across the continent. Auschwitz anniversary a reminder of the danger of staying silent Yahoo! News/Reuters, Dec. 29, 2014 Next month's 70th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz death camp is a reminder, at a time when anti-semitism is on the rise again, of what happens when the world stays silent about persecution, the president of the World Jewish Congress said. Ronald S. Lauder told Reuters in an interview anti-semitism had reached levels not seen since World War Two, driven by Islamist extremists using hatred of Jews as a way to attack Israel, and by far-right nationalists in Europe. "There is a total disconnect between what they say for external consumption and internal consumption." http://news.yahoo.com/auschwitz-anniversary-reminder-danger-staying-silent-084602735.html

A "new storm of anti-semitism" was sweeping through Europe, he said. "An awful wave of hatred has descended on Earth once again." Schools must teach tolerance, houses of worship must teach love and countries must make hate a crime, he demanded. Otherwise "the tragedy of this terrible place will darken the world again." http://www.smh.com.au/world/survivors-return-to-auschwitz-to-mark-the-70th-anniversary-of-theliberation-of-the-infamous-nazi-death-camp-20150128-12zkh1.html

Auschwitz 70th anniversary: Survivors warn of new crimes BBC News, Jan. 27, 2015 Ronald S Lauder, president of the World Jewish Congress, told the commemoration: "Jews are targeted in Europe once again because they are Jews... "Once again young Jewish boys are afraid to wear yarmulkes [skullcaps] on the streets of Paris, Budapest, London and even Berlin." http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-30996555

On Auschwitz anniversary, leader warns Jews again targets Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel/AP, Jan. 27, 2015 BRZEZINKA, Poland (AP) - A Jewish leader stood before 300 survivors of the Nazis' most notorious death camp on Tuesday and asked world leaders to prevent another Auschwitz, warning of a rise of anti- Semitism that has made many Jews fearful of walking the streets, and is causing many to flee Europe. And once again, Jewish families are fleeing Europe." The recent attack in Paris, in which four Jews were killed in a kosher supermarket, is not the first deadly attack on Jews in recent years. "Much of this came from the Middle East, but it has found fertile ground throughout the world." http://www.jsonline.com/news/usandworld/national/leaders-mark-auschwitz-liberation-70-years-onwithout-putin9de63df3c2654a0db46a8ad73a04a9ad-289884751.html
