Transcription:

Jesus prayed in John 17:16, My prayer is not that you take them out of the world, but that you protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. You ve heard the phrase, In the world, but not of the world. I believe that speaks to our geography and our identity. Where are we (geography)? We live in this broken world, full of sin and dysfunction. Who are we (identity)? We are people who have been forgiven, healed, and saved by a gracious and loving God. We are called to be light, love, and healing to the world. This requires us, at some level, to engage, participate, and influence the world in which we live, while at the same time not allowing it to draw us away from the Straight and Narrow. This is very fine line, and there isn t a whole lot of agreement among Christians as to where the line is, and how to operate accordingly. So we live in a culture that celebrates Halloween - a day that has thankfully been emptied of its pagan roots and turned into a time of family fun. There is definitely a dark side to it, but for most of us, the worst result is the over-indulgence of sugary treats, and a few people who have too much fun scaring the beejeebers out of kids. For some Christians, Halloween is totally off limits. Avoid all appearance of evil, says the scripture. So for some there is zero participation, and I can t fault them for it. But for us at GCC, we see Halloween as a way to engage, to participate in people s lives, meet new neighbors and friends, invite them to church, and influence the culture - even bring some redemption to it. It s more than a just a safe place to bring kids on Halloween. We invited folks to take part in a bigger story. There s plenty of Christmas in our Halloween party. Operation Christmas Child is a big part of our fall giving, and while there were lots of kids getting candy, there were also lots of folks giving boxes and bags full of Christmas gifts. And we invited everyone we could to our kids Christmas program on December 7 th. You are a city on a hill. You are a lamp on a stand that gives light. You are in the world, but not of it. So engage in something potentially dark like Halloween and redeem it in Jesus Name. Engage the gluttony that comes with Thanksgiving and live out your gratitude in Jesus Name. Engage the commercialism and excess that has become Christmas and give of yourself to others, because God is a generous giver in giving His own Son for the salvation of the world.
