I d rather have Jesus than anything this world affords today. Let s continue in our book Desire of Ages, Chapter #57, pages 519-520 Christ gave this man a test. He called upon him to choose between the heavenly treasure and worldly greatness. The heavenly treasure was assured him if he would follow Christ. But self must yield; his will must be given into Christ's control. The very holiness of God was offered to the young ruler. He had the privilege of becoming a son of God, and a coheir with Christ to the heavenly treasure. But he must take up the cross, and follow the Saviour in the path of self-denial. {DA 519.5} Question: What did the test call from the young ruler that Christ gives? And, what was offered to the young man? Answer: He called upon him to choose between the heavenly treasure and worldly greatness, self must yield; his will must be given into Christ s control. And, the very holiness of God; He had the privilege of becoming a son of God, and a coheir with Christ to the heavenly treasure. Song: Let s learn our first beautiful song together dear ones from the book of James! Scripture Song Singer-Character Building James 4:7-10 (KJV) Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. (2 xs) Cleanse [your] hands, [ye] sinners; and purify [your] hearts, [ye] double minded. (2 xs) Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and [your] joy to heaviness. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up. (2 xs) and he shall lift you up. (2 xs) Christ's words were verily to the ruler the invitation, "Choose you this day whom ye will serve." Joshua 24:15. The choice was left with him. Jesus was yearning for his conversion. He had shown him the plague spot in his character, and with what deep interest He watched the issue as the young man weighed the question! If he decided to follow Christ, he must obey His words in everything. He must turn from his ambitious projects. With what earnest, anxious longing, what soul hunger, did the Saviour look at the young man, hoping that he would yield to the invitation of the Spirit of God! {DA 520.1} Question: Which words were verily to the ruler the invitations of Christ? And, what must he do, if he decided to follow Him? Answer: Choose you this day whom ye will serve. Which choice was left with him. And, he must obey His words in everything. He must turn from his ambitious projects. Children s Sabbath School _ Lesson#264 10.6.18 Page 2
Christ made the only terms which could place the ruler where he would perfect a Christian character. His words were words of wisdom, though they appeared severe and exacting. In accepting and obeying them was the ruler's only hope of salvation. His exalted position and his possessions were exerting a subtle influence for evil upon his character. If cherished, they would supplant God in his affections. To keep back little or much from God was to retain that which would lessen his moral strength and efficiency; for if the things of this world are cherished, however uncertain and unworthy they may be, they will become all-absorbing. {DA 520.2} Question: What was the ruler s only hope of salvation? And, what were the things if the ruler cherish would lessen his moral strength and efficiency and may become all-absorbing? Answer: In accepting and obeying Christ words of wisdom, though they appeared severe and exacting which could place the ruler where he would perfect a Christian character. And, His exalted position and his possessions, if the things of this world are cherished it will keep back little or much from God. Song: Let s learn another scripture song together dear ones from the book of Jeremiah! Scripture Song Singer-Character Building Jeremiah 9:23, 24 (KJV) Let not the wise [man] glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty [man] glory in his might, let not the rich [man] glory in his riches:thus saith the LORD (2 xs) But let him that glorieth glory in this, (2 xs) Let he understandeth and knoweth me, that I [am] the LORD I [am] the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these [things] I delight, saith the LORD. (2 xs) Jeremiah chapter 9:23 and 24 Thus saith the LORD (2 xs) The ruler was quick to discern all that Christ's words involved, and he became sad. If he had realized the value of the offered gift, quickly would he have enrolled himself as one of Christ s followers. He was a member of the honored council of the Jews, and Satan was tempting him with flattering prospects of the future. He wanted the heavenly treasure, but he wanted also the temporal advantages his riches would bring him. He was sorry that such conditions existed; he desired eternal life, but he was not willing to make the sacrifice. The cost of eternal life seemed too great, and he went away sorrowful; for he had great possessions. {DA 520.3} Question: Did the ruler discern all that Christ s words involve? And, did he desire eternal life and was he willing to do surrender all to obtain it? Answer: Yes! And he became sad. He wanted the heavenly treasure, but he wanted also the temporal advantages his riches would bring him. And, Yes! But he was not willing to make the sacrifice. The cost of eternal life seemed too great, and he went away sorrowful; for he had great possessions. Children s Sabbath School _ Lesson#264 10.6.18 Page 3
His claim that he had kept the law of God was a deception. He showed that riches were his idol. He could not keep the commandments of God while the world was first in his affections. He loved the gifts of God more than he loved the Giver. Christ had offered the young man fellowship with Himself. Follow Me, He said. But the Saviour was not so much to him as his own name among men or his possessions. To give up his earthly treasure, that was seen, for the heavenly treasure, that was unseen, was too great a risk. He refused the offer of eternal life, and went away, and ever after the world was to receive his worship. Thousands are passing through this ordeal, weighing Christ against the world; and many choose the world. Like the young ruler, they turn from the Saviour, saying in their hearts, I will not have this Man as my leader. {DA 520.4} Question: Did the young ruler keep the law of God? And, what did he love more than the love of the Giver? Answer: No! His claim that he had kept the law of God was a deception. He showed that riches were his idol. He could not keep the commandments of God while the world was first in his affections. And, He loved the gifts of God more to give up his earthly treasure that was seen, for the heavenly treasure that was unseen, was too great a risk. Question: Did the young ruler refused the offer of eternal life? And, how many are passing through this ordeal and what do they turn from the Saviour, saying in their hearts? Answer: Yes! And went away and ever after the world was to receive his worship. And, Thousands weighing Christ against the world; and many choose the world. And, like the young ruler, they turn from the Saviour, saying, I will not have this Man as my leader. Song: Let s learn our last beautiful scripture song together dear ones from the book of 1 Peter! Gather the little ones together! It s Story Time! Our book selection this Sabbath is entitle, Sons and Daughters of God Chapter 6-With a Happy Sabbath Day of Worship and Rest Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day [is] the sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work [therein]: it [is] the sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings. Leviticus 23:3. {SD 181.1} Whatever of ours God claims from us, He returns again, enriched, transfigured, with His own glory.... {SD 181.2} The Sabbath and the family were alike instituted in Eden, and in God's purpose they are indissolubly linked together. On this day more than on any other, it is possible for us to live the life of Eden. It was God's plan for the members of the family to be associated in work and study, in worship and recreation, the father as priest of his household, and both father and mother as teachers and companions of their children. But the results of sin, having changed the conditions of life, to a great degree prevent this association. Often the father hardly sees the faces of his children throughout the week. He is almost wholly deprived of opportunity for companionship or instruction. But God's love has set a limit to the demands of toil. Over the Sabbath He places His merciful hand. In His own day He preserves for the family opportunity for communion with Him, with nature, and with one another. {SD 181.3} Since the Sabbath is the memorial of creative power, it is the day above all others when we should acquaint ourselves with God through His works... Happy the father and mother who can teach their children God's written Word with illustrations from the open pages of the book of nature; who can gather under the green trees, in the fresh, pure air, to study the Word and to sing the praise of the Father above. {SD 181.4} By such associations parents may bind their children to their hearts, and thus to God, by ties that can never be broken. {SD 181.5} The Sabbath should be made so interesting to our families that its weekly return will be hailed with joy. {SD 181.6} Next Week: We will be reviewing our lesson, One Thing Thou Lackest Part 2 of our book Desire of Ages Closing Prayer request one of the little ones or mommies or daddies to give prayer.
