Leaders: this is just for you! Read ahead of time to engage with the Bible story on an adult level and prepare your heart to teach on Sunday.

35 The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, Look, the Lamb of God!

35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; at believeth on me shall never thirst.

John 7: Jesus, the Christ Let anyone who is thirsty come to me to drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them. -John 7:37-38 (NIV) Day One: Getting Started Before you start, take a moment to pray for the Holy Spirit to reveal truth and wisdom to you as you read the word of God. Take time to confess any sin that may need repentance and receive the grace the Lord has for you. Read John 7:1-53 today. Record any key verses or phrases that stood out to you and why. (Read it several times using different translations and/or listen to an audio version if possible.) Day Two: Setting the Scene Read John 7:1-10 today. 1. Verse 1 tells us that Jesus was staying around Galilee. What was the reason for Jesus to head to Judea, and what was preventing Him? (Reference John 5:18.) 2. The Festival of Tabernacles was one of the three pilgrimages required to the temple each year. Read Leviticus 23:33-43, and record what you find out about the Festival of Tabernacles. Page 42

3. Who was goading Jesus to go to Judea? Why? (vs. 3-4)? 4. What does verse 5 reveal to us about Jesus half brothers? What do Psalms 69:8 and Mark 6:1-6 add to our understanding of Jesus family dynamics? 5. We were introduced to Jesus being aware of God s timetable in Chapter 2. How was Jesus aware of it in this passage? How would it have benefited the brothers if Jesus were to have gone with them? 6. Jesus never allowed others to order His steps. He was always listening and obedient to His Father s timing. Have you ever gone before God s leading or delayed going when His leading was clear? What were the results? Day Three: The Debate Read John 7:11-36 today. 7. Verse 12 says that there was a lot of grumbling about him among the crowds. What are some grumblings about Jesus YOU hear among the crowds you are in? 8. There were three groups of people identified in this passage. List the three groups and record what their view of Jesus character was. Page 43

9. Due to the large crowds at festival times, religious teachers would often sit on the Temple steps to teach. We find in verse 14 that Jesus makes His way up to the Temple to begin a doctrine lecture. What was His message? (vs. 16-19) 10. What did the people question in verse 15? Many of the other teachers were quoting from rabbinical schools of thought or famous rabbis who were well known. Who did Jesus say His authority of His teaching was, according to verse 16? Why did this cause problems among the Jewish leaders? 11. What were the questions the people were asking about Jesus in verses 25-26? What was their objection in verse 27? 12. What was Jesus response to them in verses 28-29? 13. Again, the leaders were unsuccessful in arresting Him because His time had not yet come. What was the result of Jesus teaching, according to verse 31? Day Four: Living Water Read John 7:37-39 today. 14. What two invitations did Jesus offer on the last day of the feast? (vs. 37-38) 15. Go back and read John 4:13-14, where Jesus talks about the living water. What are the characteristics of the living water that Jesus offered? Page 44

16. Remember that the Festival of Tabernacles was to commemorate God s provision for the Israelites in the wilderness. Read Exodus 17:3-7 and describe what happened while they were in wilderness exile? 17. Each day during the Festival of Tabernacles the high priest drew water from the pool of Siloam and carried it back to the temple. The shofar was blown, songs were sung, Isaiah 12:3 was recited, and then the priest poured the water around the altar as an offering to God. What does Isaiah 12:3 say? 18. With the backdrop of Isaiah 12:3 being chanted by the priests from the temple, why were the words Jesus stood up to shout (John 7:37-38) significant? 19. How has Jesus satisfied the thirsts and longings in your life? Day Five: The Responses Read John 7:40-53 today. 20. What was the division of opinion now about Jesus? (vs. 40-43) 21. Go back to John 7:32. What were the temple guards supposed to do? Page 45

22. Why didn t they do what they were supposed to do, according to verses 44-46? 23. How did the Pharisees respond to the following groups: the temple guards (vs. 47) themselves (vs. 48-49) the crowd (vs. 49) Nicodemus (vs. 50-52) 24. What is your reaction to Jesus today? How did you come to your conclusions about Him? 25. As you review John Chapter 7, what have you studied this week that has made an impact on your life or encouraged spiritual growth? Page 46
