400,000 Strong! The earth is the LORD s and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it (Psalm 24:1) Sunday, Sept 21, 2014 the Peoples Climate Change March in Manhattan. I have never been in such a huge crowd before. Eleven of us from New Hempstead Presbyterian Church were there including one of our youngest family members, Kelly Ann Pomavilla! At one point, an absolute wave of sound made its way from the back of the march to the front. It was a rallying cry for a hurting planet. We didn t all march together (some were with the Sierra Club) and we did get separated from the Hudson River Presbyterians (Howard and I were with Kryste, and she had the car keys; we stuck to her like glue!) It was great to be part of something so much bigger than I am, marching together for the health of God s creation. Our own PC,USA voted to study divesting our holdings in fossil fuel companies. I personally hope that we do this: I am very uncomfortable with parts of my pension being invested in something so devastating to the world that God created and loves, and Jesus died for. We are doing this for biblical and Theological reasons. The warning in Scripture that the wages of sin is death could not be more literally true than it is in the case of fossil fuels.climate change poses a catastrophic threat, and as stewards of God s creation we simply must act, says Rev. Serene Jones, a PC, USA minister and the president of Union Theological Seminary in Manhattan. The following website is just one of many which have some suggestions about reversing climate change. It s not too late, but the door is closing fast. http://science.howstuffworks.com/environmental/green-science/reverse-global-warming.htm October 2014 Carriage Stone - 2 - Vol. 26, No. 9

Peacemaking Offering to Benefit Local Veterans This year, the local portion of our Peacemaking Offering will benefit Homes for Heroes of Rockland County, a not-for-profit organization that is working to build affordable housing for homeless and disabled veterans on the former Camp Shanks site in Tappan, NY. Fifty-two apartments all handicapped accessible are planned for the 14.5-acre site. Phase 1, which includes eight apartments, was opened last November. The second phase calls for 20 additional apartments to be built. You can help support this effort by giving generously to the Peacemaking Offering, to help ensure that no one who has served their country is homeless. Rockland Homes for Heroes is a private, nonprofit organization and is a joint venture between Joseph s Home Inc. and the Rockland Housing Action Coalition. http://www.rocklandhomesforheroes.com/ An Update on Jarrod Crockett Our grandson Jarrod Crockett completed his Boren National Security Fellowship ending a year of Arabic study in Amman, Jordan this past June. We thank you for your prayers for his safety during his stay in the Middle East. We celebrated Jarrod s safe return and successful completion of study with a cookout at our home this past July and enjoyed your company. You, our church family, have been enthusiastic and supportive of Jarrod s endeavors and we appreciate you all for your prayers, your concerns and other kind considerations. Some of you have expressed interest in what Jarrod plans to do next. Jarrod has resumed his studies at Seton Hall University and is on track to earn his Masters in Public Administration this December. As part of his curriculum he is doing an internship working for the Arab American Association of New York, located in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. He is the coordinator for their citizenship program and helps prepare community members to take the U.S. Citizenship Exam. He also teaches English as a second language, manages volunteers and provides casework assistance. As a recipient of a National Security Fellowship, he has incurred a service obligation to the U.S. Government, which will have to fulfill within the next 36 months. He will be required to apply for a position within the U.S. National Security establishment, such as the Department of Defense, Homeland Security or State (his preference). Once Jarrod satisfies this one year obligation he will be free to pursue his choice of career. October 2014 Carriage Stone - 3 - Vol. 26, No. 9

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance Responds to Humanitarian Crisis in Iraq Violence spread rapidly as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) began to take over portions of northern and western Iraq in August 2014. As many as a million people are displaced, fleeing Mosul and other cities. Iraq was already responding to the ongoing crisis where almost 220,000 Syrian refugees had sought refuge in the same region. Blessing of the Pets The Blessing of the Pets will be held Saturday, October 11 in the Sanctuary at 4 PM. Bring your small pets (in cages or on leashes) and celebrate the feast of St. Francis of Assisi. PDA is supporting our partner The National Evangelical Church of Iraq in providing food, water, clothing, fuel, hygiene items, and bedding to those most in need and in helping those who are displaced to find housing and employment. PDA will also respond in cooperation with and as a member of ACT Alliance, which has already been working in informal camps to provide hygiene and sanitation kits, food packages and emergency shelters.
