December 2016 Atascocita Lutheran Church September 2017 Sunday Worship 9:30 am - Holy Communion with a mix of traditional and contemporary music Let s Celebrate the Holts on September 10th All are invited to join us for a farewell brunch for Pastor Tim, Kaia, Eli and Max as we thank them for four wonderful years and wish them well as they move on to their next call in Indiana. This beautiful family has literally doubled in size since they arrived in 2013, and having Eli and Max baptized at ALC will always hold special memories for the Holts and for us. Please participate if you are able. For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Romans 12:4-5 Between our services on August 20 th and the 27 th and e-mail blasts throughout the week, feelings on the catastrophic hurricane have been discussed, and I can t help but suspect many of us are tired of hearing or reading about it; preferring to talk about something else. With that I want to take this opportunity to highlight something that was mentioned a few weeks back, but feel has been overlooked with everything else that has been going on. After 20+ years of teaching confirmation, Robert Graham has decided the time has arrived to step away from teaching. He has no doubt had a massive impact on countless youth throughout his career in the school system and in the church. Your gifts will be missed, yet always appreciated by those who had a chance to work with you. No doubt you will find something else if you haven t already to keep yourself busy. You did great Robert. Thank you for everything. Pastor Timothy Holt 1

Hi Everyone, On 8/14/17, you learned that Pastor Tim has taken a call from a Church in Indiana. He, Kaia, Eli and Max will be moving closer to family. We will miss them greatly and pray they have an easy move and transition. As for our church, I want to assure you the Leadership is already working to put the call process into place. I have been in touch with Blair Lundborg who is Assistant to the Bishop concerning the process of obtaining a new full time preacher. Atascocita Lutheran Church is strong and will survive and thrive with this new development. We will be working closely with Pastor Blair and Bishop Mike Rinehart as we move forward. He will lead worship on Sunday September 17, 2017 and will have an information session after the service that day. Congregation Meeting is tentatively set for Sunday, September 24, 2017. Please join us. We will be discussing what to expect from the call process and the recent appraisal of vacant property belonging to the church. God Bless You All. In His Service, Dan Cargill 2

Join us for Blessing of the backpacks September 3rd, during worship. All students and educators are welcome to bring their school bags for a special blessing. Save the date for September 10th, Sunday School Rally Day! All children will meet together in the nursery at 10:45. Your youth won't want to miss this special hour of fun and getting to know each other! If you are interested in having your child attend ALC Youth Sunday School and/or interested in volunteering to help teach our littlest disciples, there will be a registration table located in the fellowship hall beginning August 27th. We are looking forward to another great year! Why Teach Sunday School? Because you can help transform lives, educate minds, and fulfill the Great Commission! Your teaching will help share the good news of God's love for us and your teaching will help the children of our congregation grow as Christian disciples. Not only will your teaching impact your class of listeners but will create a ripple and impact those connected to your listeners, their friends at school, neighbors, extended family and many others, making the world a better place. Lesson plans and materials have been preselected and will be provided for you, giving you ease of preparation. Please consider and pray about your commitment to this ministry. This ministry can be God's gift to you, and committing to it can be your gift to God. For any questions, please contact us at sundayschoolfaith@hotmail.com or phone us at 713-557-8587. 3

A Ministry of Atascocita Lutheran Church Welcome to Chrysalis School Chrysalis School is a two day program for the preschool child that offers a three-year-old class and four-year-old class. The 2017 school year is our 19 th year as a ministry of ALC. We offer inviting classrooms and experienced, caring teachers that are committed to fostering a love of learning. Students will learn and explore through hands-on activities and games that expand their learning of letters and letter sounds, numbers and math, shapes and colors and patterning, graphing, and estimating. The children are given many opportunities for socializing throughout the day as they play together in the different centers in the classroom. We offer the Handwriting Without Tears Get Set For School Readiness and Writing preschool curriculum. The curriculum introduces writing readiness and literacy curriculum full of developmentally appropriate activities that teach children body awareness, crayon grip, letter recognition and capital letter formation. And, don t forget about art! We use paint, crayons, markers, glitter and glue, feathers and sequins, to allow the children to express themselves creatively. We also do themed crafts to display on our bulletin boards for everyone to see! Our Specials : Chapel Time is a weekly time for singing, a Bible story, and a prayer with our pastor. Library Time is a weekly time when we listen to a story in the library and check out books to take home. Music Time is a twice a month class when the children will listen to different types of music, play instruments, dance, and learn basic musical terminology. Science Time is a monthly class with discussion and a hands on activity to help us learn about our wonderful world. Please visit the school's website at www.thechrysalisschool.org for more information. For tours contact Renee Wallace at 281-852-6002 or thechrysalisschool@yahoo.com 6

Thank you for supporting our Adopt-a-Chaplain Ministry The disciples of ALC have so generously supported this ministry and it is very much appreciated. I want to share a message I recently received from our adopted chaplain, Cpt. Edward Kim. I hope you and the saints of Atascocita Lutheran Church are doing well. My soldiers and I are doing great thanks to God's grace and your tremendous support. We completed our gunnery training excellently and soldiers from Iraq came back to Kuwait after they successfully drove out ISIS from Mosul. Also, I had a chance to visit Jordan for Chaplain Professional Development Training with other chaplains in my brigade two weeks ago. It was a great opportunity for me to broaden my Biblical perspective and to enhance my spiritual resiliency by visiting the Jordan River and Mount Nebo. We received 18 boxes since last week. Thanks for sending the snacks and noodle soups. As we have so many noodle soups, more soldiers are coming to my office to eat soup for their lunch or dinner, which gives me a chance to talk to more soldiers. Also, they love to have those snacks. We have been here 6-7 months and will start manifesting back to the States in the middle of October. Probably, I will leave here on 22 OCT, but not sure yet. I will let you know after I get the exact date. Appreciate your continuing support and prayers! I also want to thank you for your ongoing support and prayers for Cpt. Kim and the men and women he serves with. Please stop by the bulletin board in the fellowship hall to see more photos that Cpt. Kim has shared with us over the past several months. 7

Book Club The ALC book club will meet on Monday, September 11th at 7 pm in the fellowship hall. We will be discussing Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen This interesting story about life in a traveling circus during the Great Depression should make good reading and good discussion. Everyone is welcome to join us, you do not need to be a member of ALC. Bring a friend. 8
