December 23, 2012 St. Florian Parish Page Three KNOW THE MASS, ONE WORD AT A TIME Praise We praise God. We praise each other. Sometimes, we even praise ourselves. It is good to offer well deserved praise. To praise is to acknowledge the goodness of others and the greatness of their accomplishments. And there is no end to the goodness of God and the greatness of what God has accomplished for us through his Son Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit. There is also much to praise for what God has accomplished in and through others and in our very selves. The whole Mass praises God and sometimes explicitly so: We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory.... Or, Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. We also praise those whom God has made holy the saints and look forward to sharing their eternal life, which is life caught up in the full loving mystery of God and praise. We ask that with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with the blessed Apostles, and all the Saints who have pleased you throughout the ages, we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life, and may praise and glorify you.... Visit our website at www.ltp.org KNOW THE MASS, ONE WORD AT A TIME Alabar Alabamos a Dios. December 23, 2012 St. Florian Parish Page Five St. Florian School Happenings... visit us at - www.stflorianschool.org St. Florian is in need of some technical support. If you are an alumni, parishioner or technology savvy, our school could use your time and skills to trouble shoot problems with student computer programs. Our wonderful and exceptional IT teacher had a full plate and could use some assistance. If you are looking for a worthy cause this Christmas season, look no further. Please consider donating your time and talent to a worthy cause. For more information contact the school office at 773-646-2868. Market Day - Orders due Fri., Jan 18th. Pick up on Fri., Jan. 25th in the school gym from 2-3 PM. Profit earned last month: $131.85 HOW TO HAVE A MERRY CHRISTMAS Our modern observance of the Christmas season seems to begin in the fall, as stores are filled with holiday displays, and end on Dec. 26th, when Christmas trees start peeking out from the trash. However, celebrating Christmas as a Catholic means that, as much as we can, we follow a radically different calendar one given to us through the ancient wisdom and tradition of the Church - before, during, and even after Dec. 25th. Vocation Thoughts.DECEMBER 23 4TH SUNDAY OF ADVENT Oh Come let us Adore Him! How is God calling you to love, adore, and serve Him?If you have ever thought about priesthood, consider attending the next Exploring Priesthood Weekend retreat held on January 11-13, 2013 at Mundelein Seminary to learn about, reflect and discuss the possibilities of diocesan priesthood in Chicago. For more information contact Fr. Brian Welter at 312-534-8298 or at bweter@archchicago.org or go to www.chicagopriest.com. 2013 Calendars We will distribute calendars the weekend of Dec. 29/30. There will be a special blessing as we welcome the new calendar year. Our special thanks to Elmwood Chapel for their generosity in sponsoring our 2013 calendars. Mission Statement of St. Florian School Our mission is to provide each student with a Catholic education in all areas. The faculty and school families join the parish staff and fellow parishioners to form a living Catholic faith community. Our school population is multicultural and fosters sensitivity to the needs of all. We promote the students burning desire for learning. Through education, service, support, formation and challenge, the students are called to realize their potential spiritually, socially, and intellectually. For one hundred years our school has been committed to carry out the values of Jesus Christ on a daily basis. Welcome! A warm welcome to all who have come to worship with us this Christmas season. We hope that it is a time for all to renew friendships, to celebrate with family and to give thanks to our God who has blessed us so richly. If you are visiting our parish with friends or family or perhaps reacquainting yourself with our parish family after some time has passed, please know that we are honored by your presence. May the new year bless you abundantly with the richness of friends, good health to sustain you, and an open heart to feel the presence of God.

Also, please remember to use your Christmas Flower envelope to help with the cost of our flowers and decorations used in Church throughout the Christmas season. Advent Wreath Year C Paul Turner If your are setting up an Advent wreath in your home this year, here is a prayer for the fourth week of Advent you could say while you light its candle. You may say these before or after a meal, when waking up, before going to bed, or whenever you and the members of your household gather for prayer. Before you say the prayer, read and talk over the reading you heard at Sunday Mass that week. Week 4: O God, who fulfilled your promise to Mary, fill us also with your Spirit. Make us leap for joy as we light the fourth candle of this wreath. May its light purify our hearts for the coming of Christ. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Ministry & Liturgy 2012 Resource Publications For Catholics, December 25 is only the beginning of the Christmas season. The Feast of the Holy Family. This feast is celebrated within Christmas octave. It is a fitting day to thank God for our own families and pray for a deepening of mutual love, in imitation of the Holy Family. The Feast of the Holy Innocents, December 28. On this day, we remember the children killed by Herod in his determination to end the life of the Messiah. This can be a day of prayer for the innocents of today who are exploited and abused many people now pray on this day for the victims of abortion and an opportunity to think about bringing the compassion of Christ to those in need. The Feast of Mary, the Mother of God, January 1. The octave day of Christmas is both a feast honoring Mary, the Mother of God, and a day of Prayer for World Peace. Our celebration of the New Year can be deepened by prayer that our world will be open to the peace Jesus offers.
