F O C U S O N June 24, 2018 SCHOLARSHIP SUNDAY The Methodist Foundation of Santa Monica was established in 1967 as a charitable organization serving the church and the community. From its modest beginnings, assets gradually rose over the years. By the 1980s, sufficient funds were available to begin an annual scholarship award program. Today, there are 20 designated scholarships funded by gifts from our members which have specific selection criteria. From time to time, as circumstances warrant, these designated scholarship awards are augmented from the Foundation s unrestricted multipurpose general fund. If you are interested in supporting the Foundation s mission through either general (unrestricted ) or specific gifts (such as scholarships), please contact the church office. I am very grateful for the contributions of The Methodist Foundation Scholarship Awards to my studies at Harvard University. With its support, I have been able to explore my passion for Classical Languages and Literatures, as well as participate in several extracurriculars. The flexibility provided by these scholarships has also enabled me to extend my studies into my summers. This summer, in fact, I will be studying at Washington University in St. Louis at the Summer Institute of Papyrology as the program s first undergraduate student. These scholarships represent the unceasing love and support of First UMC wherever my studies bring me. Thank you! - Alejandro Quintana I am so grateful for our First UMC Santa Monica community, for the endless love and support this church has given me, and for the opportunities that have been made available to me through the generosity of The Methodist Foundation Scholarship Awards. Over the past few years, these awards have allowed me to not only pursue an undergraduate education in sociology and psychology at Bennington College, but have also enabled me to pursue experiential and career-oriented opportunities beyond California, such as internship opportunities in the publishing industry and in education research. While these invaluable opportunities have taken me geographically far from my faith community in Santa Monica, I am constantly grateful for the ability to come home to the abundant love, compassion, and generosity of our First UMC family. - Kaitlyn Plukas FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH of SANTA MONICA 1008 Eleventh Street, Santa Monica, CA 90403 www.santamonicaumc.org 310-393-8258 info@santamonicaumc.org

MISSION OPPORTUNITIES Westside Food Bank Food is collected every Sunday to benefit the Westside Food Bank. Food bins can be found outside the Sanctuary and in the Preschool. For the month of July we are collecting pasta. UMCOR The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is the humanitarian relief and development arm of The United Methodist Church (UMC), a non-profit 501(c)3 organization operated under the auspices of the General Board of Global Ministries. When UMCOR donors designate their contribution for a particular program or disaster response, UMCOR uses 100 percent of it on that program none of it gets funneled back into fundraising or operating costs. To learn more, go to: www.umcor.org. OPEN INVITATIONS Lectionary Scripture Discussion A lectionary is a collection of readings or selections from the Scriptures, arranged and intended for proclamation during the worship of the people of God. The lectionary provides a guide to those who wish to read, study, and pray the Bible in tune with the church s prayer and preaching. Center your mind by joining the conversation! The coffee is hot and the discussion is engaging. Come and go as you need and prepare for worship with deeper insight and understanding. Sundays: 9 9:45 a.m., in the Fireside Room Altar Guild The Altar Guild is a group of volunteers who prepare the Sanctuary for worship each week. If you are interested in volunteering for this ministry (you can volunteer for one Sunday a month), please call the church office: 310.393.8258.
