SERVICE FOR THE LORD S DAY TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME September 9, 2018 * Those who are able, please stand. Congregation responds in bold. CENTERING THOUGHT Tenderness and Rot by Kay Ryan Tenderness and rot share a border. And rot is an aggressive neighbor whose iridescence keeps creeping over.
No lessons can be drawn from this however. One is not two countries. One is not meat corrupting. It is important to stay sweet and loving. APPROACHING GOD Please silence your cell phone before worship begins. WELCOME Teri Thomas PRELUDE Prelude in F Major J. S. Bach (1685-1750) *CALL TO WORSHIP Cry out with joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness. Come into God s presence with singing! *HYMN NO. 409 God is Here! ABBOT S LEIGH
*PRAYER OF CONFESSION O Lord our God, You call us to work for a world where all will be fed and have dignity, but we find ourselves distracted by our own desires.
You call us to seek justice and peace, but we are satisfied with injustice and discord. You call us to bring liberty to the oppressed, but we do not insist on freedom for all. Forgive us, O Lord. Turn us to your will by the power of your Spirit, so that all may know your justice and peace; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Savior. *SILENCE FOR PERSONAL PRAYER AND REFLECTION *DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS Friends, hear this good news! God s mercy is poured out like a mighty river; grace flows like a never-ending stream. In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. We give thanks for new beginnings. *HYMN NO. 582 Glory to God, Whose Goodness Shines on Me GLORY TO GOD

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come; thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. MUSIC IN WORSHIP The sung response to the Declaration of Forgiveness, No. 582 Glory to God, Whose Goodness Shines on Me, has become a favorite of Northminster parishioners. This setting of the Gloria Patri (Glory to the Father) was first introduced to us when we were one of the Hymnal experiment churches in the early stages of our 2013 hymnal, Glory to God. The composer, Paul Vasile (born 1984), serves as the Minister of Music at Park Avenue Christian Church, New York. The Gloria Patri is an ancient response to the promise of God s mercy and reconciliation, and is sung by most reformed churches each Service for the Lord s Day. This morning the Chancel Choir sings two choral works by American composers. All That Hath Life and Breath was composed in 1981 by Rene Clausen (born 1958). Clausen serves as professor of music at Concordia College, Moorhead, Minnesota and is the conductor of the esteemed Concordia Choir. His recording, Life and Breath: Choral Works by Rene Clausen, received three Grammy Awards at the 55 th Grammy Awards in 2013. The Offertory (11:00), I Shall See, was composed in 2012 by composer and conductor Michael Trotta (born 1978). A New Jersey native, Trotta now lives in New York City as a full-time composer. He has studied with Sir David Willcocks, Morten Lauridsen, and John Rutter. Based on Psalm 27, I Shall See is set for a cappella chorus. Its simple rhythmic texture and meditative mood serves the text, which focusses on safety in the shelter of the Lord.
Sunday, September 16 9am Worship (no 11am worship) Community service Sign up in the Gathering Place Are you a balcony person? There are some of you who like to sit up there and look down on the rest of us. But all kidding aside, for some it is habit, for some more comfortable, for some it is where your kids want to sit and anything to keep them in church, right? The repair work on the steeple is moving along but it is very extensive, both outside and inside. We are asking for your patience. Just how much do you miss sitting up there? Enough to make a contribution to the repairs? We have wiped out the building reserve fund and over-spent buildings and grounds budget between the steeple and the HVAC system. If you are so moved, please throw an additional gift in the plate and mark it "building reserve". We promise to let you know as soon as the balcony is safe for occupancy again. Thanks for being here, no matter where you like to sit. Sunday Worship What s Next? September 16 Brief worship and then go to work Day of Caring.
