GENERAL NOTES This liturgical Ordo is for the friar, lay Carmelite and other communities of the British Province of Carmelites serving England, Scotland and Wales. The following points should be noted: 1. For this Liturgical Year from Advent 2018 until Advent 2019 Sunday and Festive Lectionary: Weekday Lectionary: Year B Cycle II 2. Abbreviations CS Carmelite Supplement (1987) NCS New Carmelite Supplement (1993) EP1 Evening Prayer 1 (First Vespers) Mem. Memorial 3. For the Liturgy of the Hours, numbers in this Ordo refer to the book of Morning and Evening Prayer printed by Collins. Page numbers to the Carmelite Supplements (also known as The Carmelite Proper of the Liturgy of the Hours) are those printed by the Institutum Carmelitanum in Rome. 4. On Ferias (ordinary days) and most Memorias, use the Psalter for the prescribed week in conjunction with the reference in the Morning and Evening Prayer book. For Feasts and Solemnities follow the indications given in the proper (the part towards the end of the books where the feast days are arranged by date). 5. The anniversaries given are those of deceased friar members of the Province, of the Blackburn Nuns, and of the founders and leaders of The Leaven Secular Institute, together with others, including some Tertiaries, who have made a significant contribution to the life of the Carmelite Family in Britain. Local Lay Carmelite communities may wish to include the anniversaries of deceased members in their prayer. When a Carmelite dies it is usual for the Office of the Dead (found at the back of most Office books) to be prayed for him/her. 2

6. Italics indicate Carmelite Feasts and anniversaries. Information on the Order s holy men and women can be found on: www.carmelite.org 7. Celebrations which are particular to a specific diocese are not included in this Ordo but normally will be found in the local diocesan directory, yearbook, or website. Feasts of the National Calendars of England, Wales and Scotland are included where appropriate. 8. Where no other celebration takes precedence, it is the custom of the Carmelite Order to commemorate Saturdays in honour of Our Lady. For the Office the Common of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Memoria of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Saturday are printed in the various editions of the Office books. 9. Solemnities of the Lord the Epiphany, the Ascension and Corpus Christi have been transferred back to their traditional days, as per the decision of the Catholic Bishops Conference of England & Wales. These are shown in the Ordo, and Carmelites in Scotland may need to check the local liturgical calendar for such dates. 10. Other days of prayer recommended by the Order are: 5 th June World Environment Day 10 th December World Human Rights Day Where possible, the 16 th of each month is a day of Prayer for Vocations. 3

NOTES FOR THE 2018 CARMELITE LITURGICAL ORDO The Bishops Conference of England & Wales (including the Liturgy Office) Holydays of Obligation: The Bishops Conference of England and Wales has agreed the following changes to take effect from 1 st Sunday of Advent 2017. Epiphany of the Lord to be celebrated on 6 th January, except when this falls on a Saturday or a Monday when it is transferred to the adjacent Sunday. Therefore, in 2018 the Epiphany will be celebrated on Sunday 7 th January. The Baptism of the Lord will be celebrated on Monday 8 th January. Ascension of the Lord to be celebrated on Thursday in the 6 th week of Easter. In 2018 this will be on the 10 th May. Both are Holydays of Obligation. The other Holydays of Obligation for England and Wales remain the same. Further information regarding the liturgical calendar can be found on the website of The Liturgy Office of the Catholic Bishops Conference of England & Wales: www.liturgyoffice.org.uk The day on which the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Domini) has not been changed and it occurs in 2018 on Sunday 3 rd June. Transferred Solemnity In 2018, 25 th March is Palm Sunday and therefore, the Annunciation of the Lord will be celebrated on Monday 9 th April. The Bishops Conference of Scotland (including the Liturgy Commission) No notes of relevance to the Liturgical Calendar were issued in 2017. For further information, visit: www.bcos.org.uk The Carmelite Family in Britain There are no particular notes for 2018. This Ordo has been compiled by Fr. Gerard Walsh O. Carm. and Mrs. Sharon Payne. Further copies of this Ordo can be obtained from the Provincial office. PDF copies also available on request. 4

THE CARMELITE CALENDAR Carmelite Solemnities, Feasts and Memorias are listed in the Ordo below (except when higher ranking observances preclude them this year). It is not the tradition in the communities of the British Province to observe Optional Memorias, except for that of St. Simon Stock because it is observed here as a Feast. They are, however, memorials which are proper to the Carmelite Order, so for those who wish to commemorate them they are included in brackets within the Ordo when other celebrations do not preclude them.
