From The Pastor A Catholic Capitalist s View (Adapted from America, Feb 20, 2017) The topic of capitalism can be a very contentious one especially for people like you and I who are trying to follow the example of Christ in their daily life. But Jesus seems to give us mixed messages about money. He tells the rich young man that if he wants to be perfect he must sell all that he owns and become a disciple. Yet Jesus also recognizes its importance when he tells Peter to catch a fish and take the coin out of his gullet to pay their taxes. So how are we to find a balance in the use of money? Here is a perspective that seems to have much merit. After converting to Catholicism, the economist, Arthur Brooks, says he was among those who knew what everyone else took to be common knowledge, that capitalism is great for the rich but terrible for the poor the rich and powerful accumulate more and more of the world s resources while the poor are exploited. But looking a little deeper, he found that this formula has, in fact, changed for billions of people. Two billion have escaped poverty in the last 50 years. So the right question today should be: Why did whole parts of the world cease to be poor for the first time in history? And further: What can we do to share this prosperity with more people? This dramatic change was not because of the UN or the billions poured out across the globe in foreign aid. The real reason is the reshaping of the global economy through five factors: globalization, free trade, property rights, the rule of law and the culture of entrepreneurship. In short, it was the American free enterprise system, spreading around the world. Capitalism is not the problem, he says, it is unbridled greed and materialism making a god of money and using people to get it. There will always be a bottom 10%, he says. But it is caused by political power and privilege not by capitalism per se. The real problem is inequality of economic opportunity. Schools are supposed to solve the problem but they do not. Education spending has doubled yet the achievement gap between students at the top and bottom of the income distribution has increased, not decreased. Pope Francis tells us in Evangelii Gaudium that In this system, which tends to devour everything which stands in the way of increased profits, whatever is fragile, like the environment, is defenseless before the interests of a deified market, which become the only rule. But Brooks maintains that capitalism per se does not make us into crass, peoplehating materialists. The real culprit is materialism the ethos that all too often accompanies the free market. Our TV programs, movies, and adverts all broadcast this formula for a happy life: love things, use people, and worship yourself. What matters is the morality of those who participate in the system. The problem is not money; it is attachment to money. It is the rampant choice to prioritize the struggle for riches ahead of higher goods such as faith, family and friendships. Brooks urges us to use reason and inspired conscience as guides not our base desires summed up in the trend: if it feels good, do it. There needs to be a moral program directing the economic system: love people, use things, and worship God. His astute advice is that we must not reject capitalism but acknowledge its limitations. Free enterprise (accompanied by necessary regulation and proper social safety nets) has helped fulfill the noble antipoverty goals of our faith for billions of people all around the world. Along with an honest accounting of market failures, we should rely on market concepts of competition and choice, which have consistently transformed industries and improved living standards.
