Father Edwin F. Kelley Assembly #1443 June July 2013 Fourth Degree - Knights of Columbus NEXT MEETINGS: 24 Jun & 22 Jul Virginia District - Calvert Province Woodbridge, Virginia 22194-0232 The Navigator s Report Faithful Navigator Jim Casey Sir Knights, In the Casey household, most checks are written by the Lady of the House, if for no other reason than her handwriting is far better than mine. If that s the case in your house, please remind your lady that Council and Assembly dues are not the same thing. That little detail almost caused us to place a Sir Knight in inactive status because his wife disregarded the Assembly dues notice, thinking it was already paid. I received the following note last month: Dear Faithful Navigator and Sir Knights, On behalf of Sister Mary Jordan Hoover and the entire Pope John Paul the Great community, I would like to sincerely thank your assembly members who assisted during our recent Gala/Auction. From the Honor Guard to the professionalism of the wait staff members, all the efforts of the brother knights is so greatly appreciated. Sister and other committee members received comments and questions on where we hired the professional waiters. They were excellent!! Through your efforts and assistance over $54,000 was raised. Besides the proceeds you helped provide the needed help to make the evening a great community event. We are grateful to be able to partner with the knights in the advancement of Catholic education. Thank you very much and may God bless all your Assembly s endeavors. In Christ, Dr. Gerard Ranieri, PGK Gala/Auction Co-Chair Please welcome to our Assembly, our 3 newest Sir Knights: Christopher Royse, Don Kearney and Komla Kudiabor As I wrap up my time as Navigator, I would like to give a special THANK YOU to all members of this Assembly who provided me with much needed advice, guidance, and assistance whenever asked. I am truly grateful for your help and keeping me on the straight and narrow. And a Double THANK YOU to SK Phil Kennedy who made my life so much easier this year. Vivat Jesus

The Friar s Corner By Fr. Michael Duesterhaus My Dear Brother Knights, Fourth Degree Exemplification St. Leo the Great Catholic School Fairfax, VA -- May 18, 2013 Something serious, something humorous for the summer. Our Holy Father on Pentecost mentioned in his homily a great insight of understanding the action of the Holy Spirit. Referring to the early Church Fathers, we can think of the Holy Spirit like the wind and we are a sailboat. We choose whether to open the sail, but when we do, we can catch the wind, catch the Spirit. This is the classic understanding of the balance between free will and the Lord's grace. Let's take the risk and open our sail of faith and let the Lord lead us where we need to go - maybe not where we want to go, but rather we need be. There are going to be many challenges and opportunities in the next few months and we need to work with the Holy Spirit to have the courage to act. And now for something humorous: Pearls of Irish Wisdom Money cannot buy happiness; but somehow, it s more comfortable to cry in a Mercedes Benz than it is to cry on a bicycle. Help a man when he is in trouble and he will remember you when he is in trouble again. Forgive your enemy...but remember the bastard s name. Alcohol does not solve any problems, but then again, neither does milk. Vivat Jesus! Fr. Duesterhaus

Vietnam Veteran s Memorial Wall Community Service Project By FN Jim Casey Mark your calendar with this date: 29 June. It is the day Fr. Kelley and Fr. Richardson Assemblies are traveling to the National Mall in order to clean the Vietnam Veteran s Memorial Wall. This project exemplifies the very nature of our degree, Patriotism. It allows us to pay a special tribute to those members of our Armed Forces who answered their country's call. The task is simple, clean the East and West walls and police the surrounding grounds around the memorial. The Park Service provides the cleaning supplies, e.g., hoses, rags, ladders, brushes, soap, etc. for this effort. The assemblies are responsible for supplying the work force to make it happen. It takes about two hours (6:30-8:30 AM) to clean, wash, and police the memorial. This activity is open to all Sir Knights, family members, and guests of the assembly. The Vietnam Veteran s Memorial stands prominently on the National Mall just northeast of the Lincoln Memorial. The memorial currently consists of three separate parts: the Three Soldiers Statue, the Vietnam Women's Memorial, and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, which is the best-known part of the memorial. American architect Maya Lin designed the Memorial Wall. More than 58,000 names are inscribed on the polished black granite wall of the men and women who gave their lives or still missing in action. The wall s mirror like finish reflects the images of the surrounding trees, lawns and monuments. There are two walls, East and West walls. The East wall is pointing to the Washington Monument while the West wall points to the Lincoln Memorial. Each wall is 246.75 feet long, composed of 70 separate inscribed granite panels, plus 4 panels at the end without names. The panels themselves are 40 inches in width and at the vertex; the walls are 10.1 feet in height. Here are the particulars for this project: When: Saturday, 29 June, 6:30 8:30 AM Where: National Mall, Vietnam Veteran s Memorial Muster Time and Car Pool Location: Meet at 5:30 AM, Fr. Kelley Council Hall Parking lot (13386 Telegraph Road, Wdbg, VA 22192) Dress: Wear appropriate clothing for the weather and be prepared to get a little wet. The Word from the Admiral By PFN Phil Kennedy Guess what? It s already June, the official start of summer is in a few weeks and most importantly, we are at the end of another fraternal year. Looking back since last July, we were very successful in adding seven new Sir Knights to our rolls. In addition, just last month, SK Don Kearney, Christopher Royse, and Komla Kudiabor joined us at the Spring exemplification held at St. Leo s in Fairfax. For those looking forward to the Fall exemplification, mark your calendar -- 26 October in Virginia Beach. My time as your Admiral was a very rewarding experience. Let us show the joy of being children of God, the freedom that living in Christ gives us which is true freedom, the freedom that saves us from the slavery of evil, of sin and of death! Audience, April 10 On Evangelization May you also be true evangelizers! May your initiatives be bridges, means of bringing others to Christ, so as to journey together with him. And in this spirit may you always be attentive to charity. Each individual Christian and every community is missionary to the extent that they bring to others and live the Gospel, and testify to God s love for all, especially those experiencing difficulties. Homily, May 5 On Courage We must not be afraid of being Christian and living as Christians! We must have this courage to go and proclaim the Risen Christ, for he is our peace; he made peace with his love, with his forgiveness, with his blood and with his mercy. Regina Cæli, April
