HOLY COMMUNION We welcome all confirmed members of the Anglican Church and visitors who are communicant members of other churches to share in the Holy Communion with us. Our practice is to have the Holy Communion by intinction (dipping of the wafer into the wine). If you are not partaking of the Communion, you are welcome to come forward to receive a prayer of blessing. Please keep your hands clasped to indicate that you are not receiving the Communion. CAR PARKING As there are limited parking lots within St Andrew s Cathedral, members may wish to park at carparks in close proximity to the Cathedral. Visitors who worship with us and park their cars in the Cathedral can collect a free pass from the Information Desk or from the Welcome Centre. Photo: Watoto Children s Choir 1 1 APRIL 2018 EASTER SUNDAY RESURRECTION PEACE On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, Peace be with you. (John 20:19) COLLECT Lord of all life and power, who through the mighty resurrection of your Son overcame the old order of sin and death to make all things new in him: grant that we, being dead to sin and alive to you in Jesus Christ, may reign with him in glory; to whom with you and the Holy Spirit be praise and honour, glory and might, now and in all eternity. Amen LECTIONARY READINGS Acts 10:34-43 1 Corinthians 5:1-11 John 20:1-18 PSALM FOR 5PM Psalm 105 HYMNS 8.00am: CP147, Because He Lives, CP160, CP162 11.15am: CP147, Because He Lives, CP160, CP162 5.00pm: HP108, HP111, Jesus, Prince and Saviour, Because He Lives

THE VICAR WRITES Why should anyone believe in a crucified Messiah? And so, an innocent man was made to suffer and murdered. One may feel a deep sense of pity. Maybe even shed a tear or two. We could draw some moral courage. We may be inspired to live a better life. We may be led to deeper piety. But is this all there is to it? If the life of Christ ends with death, then his life is just a reflection of life on earth - albeit a very good one - but nothing more. In Dostoevsky s novel, The Idiot, the story is told of a Prince and his companion walking through a picture gallery. The Prince paused to stare at a painting of the crucifixion. His companion said, Don t you know that people have lost their faith in God looking at this picture? The Prince replied, Sadly, that is happening to me too. If the life of Jesus ends with the crucifixion, then we cannot say that good can triumph over hate. We will not be able to say that Christianity is anything other than a cemetery of ideals. Our lives will be enslaved in despair in this world. We walk into the night during Tenebrae and this night lasts forever. Grit your teeth. All the suffering will do is to test how strong you are as you grope your way through the dark of night. HE IS NOT HERE HE IS RISEN (Matthew 28:6) At the end of everything, from dust you were made and to dust you will return. Good, evil in this life and everything in between is all finally "dustified." But Jesus rose from the dead. He overcame death. He established a new order of reality: his new resurrected body is a sign of more to come (1 Corinthians 15:20-21, John 14:19), offering a hope "beyond the dust". It is a validation of the teachings and claims of Christ (Mark 8:31). His life was justified. And the list goes on. Good Friday can only be called good" because of Easter Sunday. That is why St Augustine said: The face of Christianity is the resurrection of Christ. Almost everyone believes that Jesus died. They believe in Good Friday but not everyone believes in Easter. Easter draws a line for those who believe and those who don t. Easter makes all the difference. A novelist, some years back, put it very well when he described what it was like to arrive in the empty hallway of a monastery for the first time; 'There is an impression of intense activity elsewhere'. That was the feeling at the empty tomb on Easter Morning. It is done. It is finished. The women went to the tomb but they were told He is not here. He is risen. No more work is needed. Jesus did it. Now, it is for you and me to trust - and rest - in what Jesus has done for us. 2

PRAYER HIGHLIGHTS WORLD Iraq Praise God for the official liberation after years of war. Continue to lift up Iraq before the Lord - for lasting peace, resettlement, hope and stability for returned and returning families. Pray that youth and children would be able to attend schools and lead normal lives. Pray for inner and physical healing of those who have returned but still live the nightmare of their captivity. Pray for those still missing, that they would be found, freed and reunited with their families. Ask for God s protection over the churches in the cities, priests and church workers who sacrifice much, as they seek to bring peace and build bridges in the community with the love of God. SINGAPORE Pray for women who have gone through abortion and are suffering the consequences of guilt, shame and pain, to receive the needed support as they go through this traumatic experience. Pray that those contemplating abortion will have the guidance and support of their families and counsellors to make the right choice and consider other viable options apart from abortion. Pray for our government leaders to have wisdom to take the necessary steps to preserve lives and improve Singapore s birth rates. Pray for Christian organisations such as Focus on the Family who provide counselling and multiple channels of support for women who have been through or are contemplating abortion. PLEASE PRAY FOR THE SICK Annie Dang, Khor Seow Hong, Marjorie Lau, Nancy Li, Barbara Rayney, Rene Tan, Joy Brett, Doris Proctor, Anna Lim, Albert Lim, Janet Lim, Ana Pelaez and Lim Soon Chye. Members who know them are encouraged to visit and pray with them. DIOCESE Pray for Bishop Rennis, Assistant Bishop Low Jee King, Assistant Bishop Kuan Kim Seng, Archdeacon Wong Tak Meng and our Diocesan officers as they lead the Diocese in the direction set by the Lord. Pray for perseverance, strength and courage to stay the course. Pray for God s anointing upon them to rightly position His people and to bring them into the place of God s purposes for His church and for this nation. Pray that everyone in our Diocese will move together with one heart, mind and spirit to lay hold of God s promises and to seek God in united prayer, for the revival of our land.
