FOLLOW THE SAVIOR, DESPITE THE PERILS

Sometimes extreme situations call for extreme measures. Once again Jesus is teaching his disciples. He is not speaking before a crowd this time,

Transcription:

Jesus Magnified Luke 8 FIRST DAY: Read Luke 8 Lesson 7 How exciting it must have been for the disciples to spend their days with Jesus! They never quite knew what a day would entail. Yet they knew they would hear life-changing truth, see great miracles, and experience great things. The same expectation is ours as we read and study Luke 8. Like the disciples accompanying Jesus, we will study life-changing words, observe great miracles, and read about the astounding works of Jesus. Get ready to accompany Jesus as He travels the regions of Galilee speaking parables, calming seas, delivering a demoniac, healing a woman, and raising the dead. Ask God to give you a heart filled with joy and expectation as you study Luke 8. SECOND DAY: Read Luke 8:1 15 1. Luke 8 records Jesus ministry in and around the Sea of Galilee. From Luke 8:1 note and comment on His activity in this region. 2. Women also accompanied Jesus as He ministered. Use Luke 8:2 3 to list these women and note the details given about each. a. What do you find most compelling about them?

3. The Galilee was a rich agricultural region in Israel. So, when a great multitude had gathered, Jesus gave them a parable about a sower. Use the parable in Luke 8:4 15 to fill in the chart below: THE SEED The seed is the Word of God. (verse 11) WHAT HAPPENED (verses 5 8) WHAT IT MEANS (verses 12 15) WHAT THIS LOOKS LIKE TO YOU That fell by the wayside That fell on rock That fell among thorns That fell on good ground 4. When the disciples asked Jesus what His parable meant (Luke 8:9), He replied, You are permitted to understand the secrets of the Kingdom of God. But I use parables to teach the others so that the Scriptures might be fulfilled: When they look, they won t really see. When they hear, they won t understand (Luke 8:10, NLT). Why did Jesus use parables? a. Why do you think some are able to understand the parables? 5. What insight do you receive from the Parable of the Sower? 2

THIRD DAY: Read Luke 8:16 21 1. Following His parable about the Word of God, Jesus emphasized the importance of giving heed to the things He said. From Luke 8:16 17 underscore the importance of each of the following in relation to His Word: a. Light (verse 16) b. Hidden things (verse 17) 2. In light of these truths, Jesus said, So pay attention to how you hear. To those who listen to My teaching, more understanding will be given. But for those who are not listening, even what they think they understand will be taken away from them (Luke 8:18, NLT). How does this validate the importance of how you hear Jesus Word? a. How do you desire to respond to Jesus Word? 3. Describe what happened with Jesus mother and brothers as He was speaking. Luke 8:19 a. What did Jesus declare when He was told they wanted to see Him? Luke 8:20 21 (1) David Guzik says, Jesus indicates that His closest family is made up of those who hear and obey God s Word. How does this speak to you? 3

4. How could you use your study today to exhort someone to heed God s Word? FOURTH DAY: Read Luke 8:22 25 1. According to Luke 8:22 23, what happened on a certain day? a. What did Jesus do as they sailed? Luke 8:23a b. Why were they in jeopardy? Luke 8:23b 2. From Luke 8:24 contrast and remark on the reaction of: a. The disciples b. Jesus (1) How can you identify with this situation? 3. Record the question Jesus asked the disciples in Luke 8:25a. a. When it comes to the storms of your life, where do you tend to place your faith? 4

4. Note and comment on the disciples reaction to what Jesus had done. Luke 8:25b 5. Share a time Jesus calmed a storm in your life. FIFTH DAY: Read Luke 8:26 39 1. Jesus and His disciples sailed to the country of the Gadarenes (Luke 8:26). Use Luke 8:27 33 to describe and comment on: a. The man who met Him there (verses 27, 29b) b. The demon s interaction with Jesus (verses 28 29a, 30 31) c. The man s deliverance (verses 32 33) d. What do you draw from this story about: (1) Demonic activity (2) Jesus authority 5

2. Those who tended the swine went throughout the city and in the country reporting what had happened (Luke 8:34). What did the people see when they came to Jesus? Luke 8:35 a. Why do you think they were afraid when they saw this? 3. In Luke 8:36 the people were told how the demon-possessed man had been healed. How did they react? Luke 8:37a a. What did Jesus do? Luke 8:37b 4. Use Luke 8:38 39 to remark on the exchange between Jesus and the man from whom the demons had departed. a. Contrast the multitude s response with that of this man. Share your thoughts. 5. List a few of the great things God has done for you. 6

SIXTH DAY: Read Luke 8:40 56 1. When Jesus returned from the Gadarenes, the multitude welcomed Him (Luke 8:40). Then a man named Jairus came to Jesus. Use Luke 8:41 42 to describe this man and his dilemma. 2. As Jesus went with Jairus, the crowd thronged Him (Luke 8:42b), including a certain woman. Read this woman s story in Luke 8:43 48 and share what stands out to you about: a. Her predicament (verse 43) b. Her actions (verse 44) c. Jesus reaction (verses 45 46) d. Her confession (verse 47) e. Jesus response (verse 48) (1) What touches you most about this story? 7

3. While Jesus was still speaking to this woman, someone came to tell Jairus his daughter had died (Luke 8:49). From Luke 8:50 record what Jesus: a. Instructed b. Promised (1) How might this have ministered to Jairus? (2) How does this minister to you? 4. Use Luke 8:51 56 to answer the following: a. How did Jesus keep this situation private? (verse 51) b. What do you note about the disposition of the mourners? (verses 52 53) (1) How did Jesus deal with them? (verses 52, 54a) c. How did Jesus minister to Jairus daughter? (verses 54b 55) d. What was her parents reaction? (verse 56a) 8

e. What did Jesus charge them to do? (verse 56b) 5. How does your study this week speak to you concerning: a. God s Word b. Faith c. Jesus authority 6. How was Jesus magnified through your study this week? 2016 Calvary Chapel Women s Ministries 3800 S. Fairview Rd., Santa Ana, CA 92704. http://women.cccm.com 9
