Brethren, Message From The Master If attendance keeps increasing at the current pace, we will need to add more chairs to the Lodge. We had 41 members and visitors attend our April Stated Meeting including Most Worshipful William Franklin Perdue. I would like to offer a special thank you to Worshipful Ted Holm who presented us with a most generous gift of new Collars and Jewels for all of our Officers. Coincidently, we presented Ted with an Award of Merit from the Grand Lodge along with a framed copy of the Resolution which, without Ted s knowledge, we unanimously voted on at our March Meeting. Congratulations Ted. Chickahominy Lodge No. 286 A.F. & A. M. Chartered February 16, 1905 Trestleboard May, 2014 Congratulations also go to Brother Joe Cobb who did quite an outstanding job during his Master Mason Catechism examination. Brother Joe, your Grand Lodge Certificate will be forthcoming. After attending virtually all of our functions over the past year as a visitor, Brother Rick Janis decided to affiliate with us. As such, he was elected a member of our Lodge. Welcome aboard Brother Rick. You no longer need to complete a visitor s slip! Our monthly breakfasts continue to be a big hit with about 138 attending our April Breakfast. The local community has come to look forward to the great food as well as the socializing. Thank you to everyone who helped out. We are always looking for more members to help out with either the kitchen or dining room duties. With summer vacations around the corner, we are going to need back-ups for our regular helpers. May would be a great time for you to come join us and learn one or more of the jobs that make our breakfast the success that it is. P.O. Box 464 7886 Richmond Road Toano, VA 23168 Stated Communication: 2 nd Tuesday, 7:30 P.M. www.chickahominy286.org Brother Tommy Karns mentioned to one of our brothers that he needed help mowing his lawn. As expected, our members came through for him. Worshipful Steve Anderson, Worshipful Ted Holm, Brother Bo Bohannon, Brother Richard Zick and I all showed up and got the job done rather quickly. Brother Tommy was very appreciative of the help and gave the Lodge a very generous donation which will be applied to our Heating and Air Conditioning Fund. (Continued next page) Page 1 of 6

Message From The Master cont d The Chickahominy Roadrunners traveled to Urbana Lodge for their April Stated Meeting. There were eight of us this trip so we needed two vehicles. Thank you Brother Jack van Leliveld for always driving during these trips and thank you Right Worshipful Charlie Hinson for also driving this time. During the meeting, Right Worshipful Ed Ruark, District Deputy Grand Master of the 11 th Masonic District, specifically commented on Chickahominy Lodge and how great it is that we visit so many other Lodges throughout the year. He told everyone that this is what Masonry is all about. Brethren, if you have not traveled with us please consider doing so. We have a great time and learn something new at every visit. We are always welcomed and have met a lot of great people and new friends along the way. There is always room for more. Our May 13 th Stated Meeting will be Bring a Friend Night. Please feel free to invite anyone you know who may be interested in becoming a Mason to our dinner that night. There will be no charge for guests. I have asked Worshipful George Hollingsworth to give an appropriate presentation prior to our opening the Meeting. We will also be presenting our first Community Builders Award to a special member of our community. May 13 th will also be Hawaiian Shirt Night. Members and Officers are encouraged to wear their brightest shirt. Let s see how colorful we can get that night. It also marks the first meeting of the warm summer months when coat and ties will not be required. Lodge shirts may then be worn for the June through August meetings. Finally Brethren, on May 1 st we will be mailing a second notice to those who have not yet paid their 2014 dues. Brethren, this process costs your Lodge extra money and creates more work for your Officers. Please get your check in the mail as soon as possible. SPECIAL NOTICES & ANNOUNCEMENTS Dues for 2014 are now due. If you have not already done so please send in your dues payment. The Stated Dinner sign-up sheet still has a few blank spaces. Please consider signing up. Remember, the Lodge will reimburse you for your out of pocket expenses. It s your cooking talent we re looking for! Please contact Wor. Steve Anderson if you have questions. Most Worshipful Wayne Flora, Grand Master of Masons in Virginia, has issued a Proclamation declaring the first day of each month Masonic Recognition Day. This recognition should take the form of wearing Masonic apparel such as hats, shirts, jackets, belts, etc. Each Mason is further encouraged to hold every day as Masonic Recognition Day by studying a portion of the Methodical Digest, Presentation Volume, other Masonic books or pamphlets, and the volume of Sacred Law, as well as hold discussions with well-informed Brethren. IMPORTANT SPECIAL NOTICE At our April Meeting we voted to use an outside service to print and mail our monthly Trestleboard and begin printing them in black and white. Unfortunately we will not be able to do that due to a problem with the way it is designed. We will continue to print and mail the Trestleboard ourselves but in black and white. We did however determine that it costs us $.75 per issue or $9.00 per year per member to produce each issue. Brethren, of the $79.00 you pay in annual dues, the Grand Lodge gets $38 and the Lodge keeps $41.00. That means that if you are still getting a hard copy of the Trestleboard, almost 25% of your dues go towards its production. That money could well be put to better use. If you have e-mail, I urge you to please consider eliminating the hard copy and utilize the e-version that we e-mail you each month or the version that is on our website. Both versions are in color. The new layout makes it much more convenient for electronic viewing either way. Or you can print it yourself and still save money for the Lodge. Please help us reduce postage and production costs as well as the effort by the Trestleboard crew! In the near future, I will be contacting each member that has e- mail address and still receiving a hard copy to try to convince them to eliminate their hard copy. Page 4 of 6
