August 3, 2014 2 Mission Statement: St. Francis of Assisi Parish is a Christ-centered family of believers, celebrating Christ alive in our lives through the inspiration of the Gospel, church teachings and traditions and the Sacraments. We are sensitive to the spiritual and temporal needs of God s people, acknowledging their uniqueness and dignity and are dedicated to reaching out and serving them through prayer, liturgical celebrations and social ministries. Guided by the Holy Spirit and nourished by the Holy Eucharist, we welcome all people with, respect and compassion. We are vigilant in protecting the rights of the most vulnerable. In the tradition of our patron, St. Francis of Assisi, we put the good news of the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ into action. Stop by the Rectory to select a Mass for a loved one living or deceased and experience the satisfying thought that you have united your personal prayer to the public and official prayers of the Church. Join St. Francis of Assisi on a Pilgrimage to the Holy Land Walk Where Jesus Walked! February 8-17, 2015 All inclusive: $3,599 from NY (JFK) Spiritual Director: Fr. Peter Kaczmarek If you desire to draw closer to Jesus of Nazareth, come, as we follow in His footsteps. Each day of your pilgrimage you will have time to renew and affirm your faith; to pray and reflect. The Scriptures will come alive as you visit Our Lord s homeland. You will be inspired by the natural beauty of the landscape, in addition to its rich historical heritage. It is an encounter that has changed the lives of many pilgrims, an act of faith and prayer. Pilgrims have been traveling to the Holy Land for hundreds of years, and as part of your pilgrimage, we include many of the rich traditions that have evolved over time. The maxim at the entrance to the Church of the Nativity says: We are hoping that: If you enter here as a tourist, you exit as a pilgrim. If you enter here as a pilgrim, you would exit a holier one. We pray that same will occur when you join 206 Tours pilgrimage. *Jerusalem, Israel *Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Jerusalem *Church of Nativity, Bethlem *Mount of Beatitudes, Galilee * The Dead Sea, Israel *Church of the Transfiguration, Mt. Bulletin Reflection In today s Gospel, Jesus feeds the five thousand with five loaves and two fish. The message of stewardship is that God s gifts, shared, will always be more than enough. Living Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who recognize that it is through the open hands of generous stewards, willing to share their many gifts, that God s people are fed and their needs met. August 3 Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time: In the Gospel, Jesus says: There is no need for them to go away; give them some food yourselves, and taking the five loaves and two fish, he blest them and gave them to the disciples to feed the crowd. Like the story of the loaves and fish, this month through your gifts to the Society of St. Vincent depaul was able to assist families by providing food, money for utility and rent bills, etc. Thank You! Road Angels are needed to drive parishioners to and from doctor appointments. Please call the Pastoral Care Office if you can help! 261-4837 Everyone is Invited to Attend Bring a Friend in Need Our Mother Queen of Peace Betania XIII SUNDAY READINGS for next week, August 10th 1 Kings 19:9, 11 13 Elijah awaits the Lord near Mount Horeb. Ma hew 14:22 33 During a storm, Jesus approaches the disciples boat, walking on the water. Peter asks to join him, but shortly a er entering the water, he sinks. August 3, 2014 5 Don t Forget Your Baby Bottle! On the weekend of August 9th and 10th, Saint Francis of Assisi will once again be hosting a Baby Bottle Fundraiser to benefit The Life Center of Long Island. The Life Center is a crisis pregnancy center that counsels women and men who are experiencing an unplanned pregnancy. They provide maternity housing, medical care, referrals, cribs, car seats, diapers and ALL other baby items that are needed. We are asking that you pick up a baby bottle and fill it with your change. Most importantly, we are asking you to recite the prayer on the bottle. The prayer attached to the bottle will enable the counselors at The Life Center to say just the right words a mother or father may need to hear. It especially opens a mother s heart to accept the truth. We believe these prayers lead abortion-minded women to call The Life Center in the first place. Let us pray with our whole heart for the lives of our unborn children. DIVINE WILL STUDY GROUP For over 40 years Jesus taught Servant of God Luisa Piccarreta, to live on earth as it is in Heaven. The Church has given the Imprimatur and Nihil Obstat to the first 19 of 36 volumes given to Luisa; the Cause for her Beautification began in 1994. If you desire to live in the Divine Will of God please join our weekly meetings on Thursdays, 7-9pm in the basement auditorium here at St. Francis.

Do you have the little toiletries the hotels give out and do not need them? Our Baby Corner has many families asking for shampoo, soaps, and other toiletries. Some of our friends save free samples as well as toiletries from their travels for our families. Often we bring small bags of soaps, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, combs, etc. along with the diapers and wipes on our home visits. If you have these items to donate, you may place them in our white crib. Always we thank Our Lord through the intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Francis for your love and generosity for our precious babies and their families. Be sure to pause in front of the beautiful image of Our Lady of Guadalupe that hangs next to the little white crib in our Baby Corner. We know of answered prayers for moms praying for a baby through the intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Unborn. Also, read about Saint Gianna Beretta Molla, a modern advocate for life. Our St. Francis of Assisi Baby Corner especially needs Huggies, Pampers, and Luv s diapers sizes 3, 4, 5, and 6, unscented baby wipes, unscented baby wash and baby coupons. Many families in our area are struggling with the high cost of living. Some families do not have cars and need to rely on public transportation, sometimes even riding two buses or a bicycle to work. Our families gratefully receive all baby items given by you. Many times we receive tearful phone calls from our moms asking that we let you know how appreciated your help is to their families. Need assistance? Wish to join our ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI RESPECT LIFE COMMITTEE? Please call our rectory at 631-757-7435. Intercessions for Life: Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time For married couples experiencing difficultly having children: may God comfort them in their suffering. Let us pray. Word of Life: Every child who, rather than being born, is condemned unjustly to being aborted, bears the face of Jesus Christ, bears the face of the Lord, Who even before He was born, and then just after birth, experienced the world s rejection. And every elderly person even if he is ill or at the end of his days, bears the face of Christ. They cannot be discarded, as the culture of waste suggests!
