The Bible and The New York Times Sunroom Finding Myself on a Journey Chapel Fall 2018 Sunday School Classes for Adults Classes Begin 9/16 Theologian Karl Barth famously said that Christians should possess with one hand the Bible and in the other a newspaper if one is to faithfully live out the faith in one s culture. Take a look at Olin Binkley s portrait outside the sanctuary (he s holding Time magazine!). Join us for lively discussion that specifically addresses the intersection of faith and life, Scripture and the critical issues, the Divine challenge and our human responses. Sources for this decidedly conversational class will include newspaper editorials (not just from the NYT) as well as magazine articles from Sojourners and the Christian Century. Marcus McFaul will facilitate in September. This class approaches Bible study as a way of exploring some of the questions, intuitions, even distresses that arise, and persist, on our pilgrim journeys. The class, facilitated by Meredith Bratcher, uses Biblebased experiential learning, but discoveries in this class are for each one their own, perhaps unpredictable, sometimes not even spoken aloud, always trustworthy. Questions, art work, journaling, or silent meditation help engage the texts, which are the lectionary Gospel readings assigned for each Sunday. It s Not Just One Way Room 17 Mindful Parenting Lounge Whether you are a new member or a member of many years, you may not know the personal faith journey of your neighbors at Binkley. Each week in this class, an individual or couple shares their story. These stories are shared with loving respect for each one s relationships with God, the Universe, Higher Power, or however her or his connection to the More is understood. Cate Alexander, Tracy Berger, and Joel & Lucy Vander Kamp share in facilitating. Each week, the group discusses ideas about parenting from current resources. The simple format includes the following: prayer, brief check-in, summary of the book or article being shared, and a discussion on prepared questions. We welcome novice and experienced parents alike looking to share laughter, support, and hope in the journey of parenting. Megan and Miles Highsmith are the cofacilitators. English as a Second Language and Christianity Room 18 This class is designed for those learning English as a second language and interested in faith. Participants will learn vocabulary, stories from the Bible, Christian traditions, as well as share from their own cultures and histories in lively discussion. Bo Lloyd is the teacher.
