June/July 2011 GraceVine New research shows that: Golf can cause balding. Fishing can cause ulcers. Barbecuing can cause migraines. What if these headlines were true? Chances are some people would give up golf, fishing and barbecuing in order to stay healthy but then what fun would summer be? Well, we ve got some good news for you. No ulcers, no balding, no margarines guaranteed! One of the best ways to stay healthy this summer, and have some fun too, is to join us for worship Sundays at 9:30 a.m. We guarantee that you will go away different than when you came, as you open yourself to experience the presence of God in music, word, sacrament and fellowship. Upcoming Events and What s new at Grace... 4 Annual Grace Improvement Day Our annual Grace Improvement Day was held on Saturday, May 14, with a good turnout despite (or because of?) the cool, rainy weather. The church should appear much brighter now, with windows washed and burnedout bulbs replaced. Painting projects were completed, as were other projects necessary to keep us in compliance with fire or other safety regulations. It was also a great opportunity to enjoy the fellowship and get to know each other better. Many thanks to all of you who participated in this effort to keep Grace looking good and working well. Grace s Kitchen Has A New Look! You may know that one of the two refrigerators in the downstairs kitchen died a few months ago. Our dilemma was whether to wait for the other frig to stop working and replace them both or to replace the single unit with something that did not match the old, existing frig. Fortunately for Grace, our dilemma was solved when Dave and Audrey Johnson provided the funding for two new refrigerators so we could have two working, matching units. The two new refrigerators with stainless-steel finish look like they were built-in and help to modernize the kitchen. Stop by and check them out, and many thanks to Dave and Audrey Johnson. Baptism took place June 5. Grace member Mike Logunetz and his cousin Jim Boge will be riding their bikes from San Francisco to Boston to raise $20,000 Habitat for Humanity BIKE FOR HOMES this summer. They began this 3600 mile journey May 9 and hope to finish July 4 Weekend. If you would like to donate to this worthy cause, go to the Habitat website for this event at: www.bikeforhomes.com. You will also be able to track their location, see daily photos, read journal entries and make credit card donations. See the church bulletin board for more information. Just got a note from SWALCO on the total number of shoes collected this year for ReUse A Shoe. There were over 41,000 shoes collected in Lake County. That's approximately 8.5 tons! Also, gently used shoes were donated to an organization called "Share Your Soles". These shoes will most likely be sent to help tornado relief efforts in Joplin, MO. Thanks to all at Grace Lutheran who participated. Help!! All crocheters and knitters Fran Bates and Condell Hospice need all the prayer shawls they can get. We are the only ones now supplying their needs. So please take some time this summer to make some and when they are done please bring them to the church office and I will take care of the rest. Exciting Ministry Opportuni- 6 Aimee Rick Memorial Fund Donation A donation was made to the Lasch family to purchase a special stroller for their 5-year old daughter, DJ. DJ has faced many medical struggles in her short life, including Down Syndrome, multiple heart and intestinal surgeries and a stroke. Despite her challenges, DJ enriches the lives of her family and the Early Childhood program she attends in Wood Dale as you can see by her bright smile! DJ s needs came to our attention through Renee Denault. Because DJ does not walk it is difficult for the family to go places together. DJ s dad lost his job last fall, and medical bills have strapped the family finances. An adapted stroller was not an item they could afford to purchase. This donation from the Aimee Rick Memorial Fund has given them the freedom to easily take DJ anywhere the family needs to go. A portion of the proceeds from the church Rummage Sale go into the Aimee Rick Memorial Fund, which is established to benefit children with disabilities. If you are aware of someone who might be considered as a beneficiary of this fund, please contact Julie Rick. Reach Out & Share the Harvest Help provide healthy, nutritious food to those in need. Be part of the Grace Gleaning Team! The community garden at CLC in Grayslake is in need of volunteers to glean the garden one Sunday per month, mid-june through October. Garden plot owners allow any ripe fruits or vegetables to be harvested between the hours of 4 pm and 6 pm on Sundays. The gleaning team will also wash the produce and pack it. On Monday mornings, the produce is delivered to Avon Township Food Pantry. If you are interested in participating, please see the church bulletin board for more information or contact Renee Denault, 847/680-8238, or ripdeno@comcast.net. Campbell Soup Bar Codes and General Mills Box Tops for Education. Please continue to save Campbell Soup bar codes and General Mills Box Tops for Education. Grace recently sent 404 Box Tops and 971 Campbell bar codes to the Navajo Evangelical Lutheran Mission in Rock Port, AZ. They receive 10 cents for every Box Top from General Mills! They receive educational supplies, etc. from the Campbell Corp. It is a small thing that each of us can do and it does help NELM. For information about the mission go to: www.nelm.org. Thank you for your support! The Social Ministry Team The C.O.O.L. FOOD Panty Item for June BABY ITEMS C.O.O.L. Food Pantry C.O.O.L. has been providing food and housing assistance to families in our community for 29 years! The faithful support of our member churches have carried us through the years. Recent high unemployment rates have taken a toll on families. During 2010 our two pantries served over 37,000 individuals (14,000 families)! Our eight family housing units provide safe living space while families get back on their feet. We encourage you to view our newly updated web site for a more comprehensive look at our programs and services: www.coolministries.org High demands on our services and increasing competition for grant monies has also stressed the resources of C.O.O.L. Although we have had generous contributions of food and money, during the past few months we have exceeded our budget for food purchases. During the summer months our contributions historically are low, yet the demand stays high. We ask that you pray for our ministry and consider a contribution to meet our present needs. The Board of Directors is appealing to our member churches for help at this time. Any amount is appreciated, please note Board Appeal on the check memo. You can also give by credit card through our web site. Please note on the designation that it is for the Board Appeal. The Board is aware of the multitude of appeals that have recently been presented to our congregations and as always we are truly thankful for the prayers, food, and money which is so generously given to C.O.O.L. Sue Dolan C.O.O.L. Board Member A Gentle Reminder The C.O.O.L. Food Pantry is in desperate need of food donations. If you see some good bargains while shopping, please consider picking up some extra cans or jars of non-perishable foods. If C.O.O.L. does not receive enough donations, they have to buy items. So far this year they have had to purchase 32,651 pounds of food to supplement their needs. YTD the combined pantries have served 4,218 families. Food donations can be placed in the baskets in Cafe Grace. Thanks for your generous support. The C.O.O.L. FOOD Panty Food Item for July CANNED FRUIT 5
