Knollwood at Worship The Twenty-first Sunday after Pentecost Sunday, October 14, 2018 10:55 am To those who feel the need of light; to those who find doubts and fears in their hearts; to those who need courage for their daily tasks; to those who feel lonely and friendless; to those who wish to give service; to all who, in faith, will support and involve themselves to the limit of their ability in the work of the Kingdom of God which this church undertakes; to all who want rest, peace, and happiness this church invites you to the fellowship of Jesus.

KNOLLWOOD AT WORSHIP GATHERING FOR WORSHIP Please silence all electronic devices. Thank you! THE CHIMES Three chimes are sounded, awakening us to the presence of God, alerting us to the voice of Christ, centering us in the embrace of the Spirit. As we gather, we present ourselves as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is our spiritual worship. THE OPENING SENTENCE... Josh Godwin One: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you. THE PRELUDE Cantad al Señor (Sing to the Lord)... arr. Nicholas Palmer Lauren Winkelman, piano THE CHORAL INTROIT Salmo 150... Ernani Aguiar The Youth Choir Translation: Praise the Lord in his sacred places, praise him in the firmament of his power. Praise him for his mighty acts, praise him according to his excellent greatness. Praise him with the sound of the trumpet, praise him with the psaltery and the harp. Praise him with the timbrel and the dance, praise him with strings and pipes. Praise him with high-sounding cymbals, praise him with cymbals of joy. Let everything that has breath praise the Lord! THE CALL TO WORSHIP... Josh Godwin One: We gather for worship because our eyes are too distracted with the next shiny object. All: Jesus our Lord, be thou our vision. One: We gather for worship because our ears are too full of a thousand claims for our attention. All: God who spoke creation, may we have ears to hear Your voice. One: We gather for worship because our hearts are cluttered with dreams that are too small for us and fears that are too big. All: Spirit of Life, move in us and through us to blow away all that distracts us and diminishes us. In the midst of all of our words, may God's Word be heard. ~Peggy Haymes THE INVOCATION AND THE LORD S PRAYER... Josh Godwin *THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN OF PRAISE, NO. 77 Praise to the Lord, the Almighty... LOBE DEN HERREN * Those who are able will stand. Ushers will seat those waiting. Hearing aids and large print hymns are available from the ushers. 2

CONFESSING OUR NEED FOR FORGIVENESS THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION (Unison)... Josh Godwin Forgive us, God, when we are too pleased with ourselves for our faithfulness. Forgive us our well-managed faith that fits in our calendars and into our lives without too much disruption. Forgive us, and grant to us the faith to see the worlds we'd rather ignore, The courage to hear the cries we cannot forget, And love enough to have our lives turned upside down for the sake of the gospel that both breaks us open and makes us whole. Open our eyes, Lord. Open our lives. Open our hearts. THE SILENT CONFESSION THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON LISTENING FOR GOD S WORD ~Peggy Haymes THE OLD TESTAMENT LESSON: Amos 5:11-15... Ben Wagener One: This is the word of God. All: Thanks be to God. THE NEW TESTAMENT LESSON: Hebrews 4:12-16... Lucy Davis One: This is the word of God. Deacon of the Week All: Thanks be to God. THE CHILDREN S TIME... Diane Lipsett *THE GOSPEL LESSON: Mark 10:17-27... Lucrecia Norman; Bob Setzer, Jr. One: This is the Gospel of Christ. *THE POSTLUDE Let All Things Now Living... arr. Nicholas Palmer Lauren Winkelman, piano TO OUR GUESTS We extend to you a sincere welcome and the hope that you will find your worship experience meaningful. You are invited to the narthex for a brief time of fellowship following worship where you can meet church members and clergy, and learn more about this congregation. To learn more about Knollwood Baptist Church, find us online at www.knollwood.org. You can also receive our newsletter and email announcements by emailing colleen@knollwood.org, or just call the church office, 725-1343. Sunday School at Knollwood begins at 9:45 a.m. KBC WELCOMING STATEMENT Knollwood Baptist Church is an inviting, inclusive family of faith open to all persons, whatever their race, gender, socioeconomic status, special needs, or sexual orientation, who want to walk in the way of Jesus. ABOUT OUR WORSHIP Today s Call to Worship and Prayer of Confession were written by Knollwood member Peggy Haymes. The acolytes are Mason Maguire and Mead Maguire and the crucifer is Matthew Maguire. Please silence all electronic devices. Thank you! Printed music used by permission of OneLicense.net #A-724940. FLOWERS The flowers in the sanctuary are given to the glory of God and in loving memory of Margaret Wiggins on her birthday by Tom & Rachel Wiggins. ABOUT OUR BANNERS The way is a familiar biblical theme encompassing such truths as the way of the Lord (Isaiah 40:3), Jesus as the way (John 14:6), and the way as a description of Christian discipleship (Acts 9:2). The words on the banner point to the movements of faith: Longing for God that impels us forward in the spiritual journey; Learning the way of the Scriptures and the way of Jesus; Loving as our love for God and our neighbors deepens; and Living as we live out of Christian faith and witness in the world. The colors of the banner emphasize green for ordinary time, the period in the church year between Pentecost and Advent. The artist who designed and painted the banners is our own Bambi Setzer. FOR THE CHILDREN Worship Care is provided for children, infant - kindergarten aged on the first floor of Building B. Children s Worship meets on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Sundays of the month for 1st through 3rd graders. During the second hymn, children meet their leaders in the narthex to walk together to B244. After the service, parents pick up their children from B244. Contact chrissy@knollwood.org to volunteers to help chaperone the children during this time. For the 2nd and 4th Sundays children are invited to enjoy the worship service with their families. Children s activity bulletins and crayons are available in the narthex. MEN S CHOIR OCTOBER 28 Come join us for Men s Choir on Sunday, Oct. 28. Breakfast will be served at 8:00 a.m. followed by rehearsal at 8:30. Please RSVP to Lauren Winkelman at lauren@knollwood.org. SIGN UP FOR KNOLLWOOD CARES MINISTRY Sign up for a Knollwood Cares team as we minister to members of our congregation. Sign-up sheets are available in the Narthex. More information about the seven teams is available in the narthex and at www.knollwood.org/ministries/knollwood-cares. THE MUSTARD SEED THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING: WHY I GIVE For 2 years I had the rewarding (and eye-opening) experience of serving as chair of the Missions Affiliations and Allocations Committee (MAAC). All of us are aware that Knollwood requires adequate funding to support its personnel, programming and facilities. But did you know that 10% of everything given to the church is directly allocated for external local, state, national and international missions? For me, giving is not an act of duty but a passion to help others, and I am proud to be a part of a church that is so missionminded. Imagine what God might call us to do with an increase in giving of just 1% of our incomes! ~Phyllis Tate, Stewardship Committee WEDNESDAYS AT KNOLLWOOD: FAITH & WORK: TOWARD A THEOLOGY OF WORK Oct. 17 Faith and Work The Mustard Seed that Changes Everything with Gayle Anderson and David Yarbrough.
