Readings October 14 Wis 7:7-11 / Heb 4:12-13 / Mk 10:17-30 Is 53:10-11 / Heb 4:14-16 / Mk 10:35-45 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time Camels on the Way Mark allows us to think that Jesus spoke with as much sympathy as disappointment when he said, How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God. Jesus understood how people can be enslaved by their possessions. He knew how hard it is for anyone to enter the kingdom of God. He had been dealing with similar difficulties with his disciples for whom competition and prestige were stumbling blocks. Therefore, Jesus went on with both humor and sympathy to explain that camels go through the eye of a needle more easily than people learn to be little and dependent enough to trust only in God s plan. Today s Gospel reminds us that every Christian is called to participate in Jesus mission. That call is personal and unique, tailored to the gifts and needs of each person. Each is free to accept or reject it. It calls forth much more than praying an extra psalm or wearing a scapular. At the same time, we are never called to the impossible but rather to be open to what is possible with the help of God. With Peter and the gang, we are all invited to accept being camels on the way to becoming more than we can imagine. Mary M. A Place of Vulnerability and Trust When we gather around the table and eat from the same loaf and drink from the same cup, we are most vulnerable to one another. We cannot have a meal together in peace with guns hanging over our shoulders and pistols attached to our belts. When we break bread together we leave our arms - whether they are physical or mental - at the door and enter into a place of mutual vulnerability and trust. The beauty of the Eucharist is precisely that it is the place where a vulnerable God invites vulnerable people to come together in a peaceful meal. When we break bread and give it to each other, fear vanishes and God becomes very close. Henri J. M. Nouwen Saint Vincent de Paul Thank you for your donations to Bountiful Baskets last weekend. We appreciate your support of our food pantry. Our next St. Vincent de Paul meeting will be held on at 9:15am in the Parish Hall. Come and learn more about our mission to serve POPE S PRAYER INTENTION FOR OCTOBER Evangelization: The Mission of Religious That consecrated religious men and women may bestir themselves, and be present among the poor, the marginalized, and those who have no voice. WORLD MISSION SUNDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2018 Next weekend, we will celebrate World Mission Sunday. Pope Francis invites the entire church to support The mission dioceses in Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Latin America and Europe, where priests, religious and lay leaders serve the world s most vulnerable communities. Please keep the Pope s mission in your prayers, and be generous in next week s collection. October 14, 2018 Page 4

HONORING OUR DECEASED LOVED ONES Each year in November we honor our beloved deceased family members and friends who have died anytime through this past year. Please fill out the form below and return it to the office by the collection basket, mail or drop by the office before October 26, 2018. PLEASE PRINT Deceased Name First Last Submitted by Phone Date of Death DEADLINE TO SUBMIT IS OCTOBER 26, 2018 Anointing of the Sick The weekend of October 20 and 21 we will celebrate the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. Usually those who choose to be anointed are people who are seriously or chronically ill, having impending surgery or elderly people who have become notably weakened. This sacrament will be administered at all the Masses and can be received more than once. Gobble! Gobble! If it s the first time you are reading about our annual Thanksgiving Day dinner, here are some facts about this effort. We ve grown from feeding 60+ people in 2014 (mostly our parishioners), to just over 120 people in 2017 (mostly neighbors from outside our parish.) It s amazing how smoothly this has unfolded. From the beginning, our parishioners have kept this effort funded; and for the last 2 years, we ve received a monetary donation from Fred Meyer of Wilsonville. It s been possible to prepare such a feast because of the fully-equipped kitchen in our parish hall. Our convection oven will allow us to cook 4 turkeys at once: none more than 13#, split in half and 2 per sheet pan. We ve staggered the start times, though, so there is always hot turkey throughout our serving time. Having this convection oven, frees up our gas oven and stove for the various side dishes that are prepared for such a feast. It is truly heart-warming to work with volunteers who want to provide this meal. If you or someone you know, will be without family or don t have the space or resources, to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal at home, please let us know. We can set a place for you and yours. Contact us by phone or email: Joanie Kruse 503-201-6990 Eileen Clarkson 214-923-0745 baggenstos@centurytel.net emclarkson1@gmail.com Look for information each week in bulletin, under: Gobble! Gobble! RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND YOUTH MINISTRY FIRST COMMUNION STUDENTS Students in class for First Communion and Reconciliation are supposed to wear nametags during the Mass attended each week of the school year. Please remember to give the nametag to Father Brian as you exit Mass. Each week you will receive a sticker on the back but only if you hand it in to Father Brian. Thank you families for making Mass attendance a priority. THE HOLY ROSARY October is the month we celebrate the Holy Rosary. Parents and their children are encouraged to pray a decade of the Rosary each night of the school week this month. There are four categories of mysteries listed below, so choose a different one each week and then by the end of the month you will have prayed the entire Rosary as a family. The Joyful Mysteries The Sorrowful Mysteries The Glorious Mysteries The Luminous Mysteries You can also pray along with other Catholics around the world by viewing YouTube videos of the rosary at this link: www.youtube.com/ watch?v=0v7uk9mdhlo. Sub Tuum Praesidium We turn to you for protection, holy Mother of God. Listen to our prayers and help us in our needs. Save us from every danger, glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen Pope Francis: Pray the Rosary Pope Francis requests that we all pray the Rosary every day this month. He also is encouraging us to pray Sub Tuum Praesidium and the Prayer of St. Michael daily with the Rosary. This week at the Synod on Youth and the Church, Pope Francis has asked the 266 priests, bishops, and cardinals attending to really make an effort to meet the youth where they are and to truly listen to what they are concerned about in the world today. Young people have big dreams for shaping their own future and we must listen and act now on their behalf. They are very concerned about the environment now and in the future. The 36 young people attending the month long synod are excited to have their voices be heard. One young man expressed his opinion on Pope Francis by saying he thought he was enthusiastic, dedicated and inspiring. During his recent Baltic States visit Pope Francis spoke with many youth and parents from broken families who have lost hope. He listened and invited them back to the Catholic Church family. Dear Pastor, My father says I should learn the Ten Commandments. But I don t think I want to because we have enough rules already in my house. Joshua, Age 10, South Pasadena October 14, 2018 Page 6
