Philippians 1:18-30 Philippians 1:18 - What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense r in truth, Christ is prclaimed, and in that I rejice. Yes, and I will rejice, Paul is rejicing fr tw reasns: One, Christ is prclaimed Tw, fr I knw that...this will turn ut fr my deliverance. (next verse 1:19) There are tw sectins beginning with this verse: 1:18b-24-1:18b-20 is ne sentence. I will cntinue t rejice (JOY), fr I knw... 1:25-26 1:25-26 is ne sentence, als Cnvinced (CONFIDENCE) f this, I knw Jy and Cnfidence are als expressed by Paul earlier in 1:4-6 Philippians 1:19 - fr I knw that thrugh yur prayers and the help f the Spirit f Jesus Christ this will turn ut fr my deliverance, 1:18-19 - Paul is ptimistic and psitive (r, jyful and cnfident) because he fully anticipated deliverance r salvatin. Was this salvatin eternal/spiritual r deliverance frm prisn/physical?

The wrd knw (ida) refers t cmplete knwledge in the mind and nt t the prcess f knwledge which cme frm experience which is the wrd ginsk. The wrd knw in cntext shws Paul is cnfident in his knwledge. Salvatin can refer t physical deliverance frm prisn r ultimate spiritual salvatin. It is best here t understand salvatin t refer t deliverance frm prisn because: One, Rme had n hstility t Christians at this time. Tw, the Greek wrd naturally meant deliverance frm death and preservatin in danger Three, verse 1:25 where Paul indicates he is certain he wuld remain n earth. But, eschatlgical salvatin is supprted by these thughts: Paul s wrds are similar t Jb 13:13-18 (especially in the LXX). S, just as peple ppsed Jb, there were als peple ppsing Paul. Yet, bth knew the circumstances wuld result in salvatin and vindicatin. 1:19, the wrd this in this will turn ut fr my deliverance is a prnun that is cnnecting t the tw sided preaching f Christians in Rme in 1:16-17. Peple were talking abut Paul, bth accusing him and claiming him t be righteus. This wuld mean Paul was cnfident f his salvatin in spite f the curt s ruling. Paul s cncern was the preaching f Christ, nt his wn persnal welfare. Salvatin is a wrd that is cnsistently used f ultimate salvatin befre Gd. Prayers f Philippians and Help f the Spirit Prayers and supply are sharing the same prepsitin and article. They are jined with the wrd and. This indicates the Philippians and the Hly Spirit were wrking tgether Help frm the Spirit is cnnected t the prayers f the saints. Cnsider Galatians 3:5 Paul may be fcusing n being vindicated in curt and delivered frm legal charges that thse wh were ppsing him were using against him. This wuld match his use f Jb s exact wrds and be in fulfillment f Jesus prmises in Matthew 10:20, Mark 13:11 and Luke 12:11, 12 when Jesus tld the disciples he wuld be with them when they appeared befre tribunals and magistrates: Matthew 10:19-21 - When they deliver yu ver, d nt be anxius hw yu are t speak r what yu are t say, fr what yu are t say will be given t yu in that hur. Fr it is nt yu wh speak, but the Spirit f yur Father speaking thrugh yu. Brther will deliver brther ver t death Mark 13:11-12 - when they bring yu t trial and deliver yu ver, d nt be anxius befrehand what yu are t say, but say whatever is given yu in that hur, fr it is nt yu wh speak, but the Hly Spirit. And brther will deliver brther ver t death Luke 12:11-12 - And when they bring yu befre the synaggues and the rulers and the authrities, d nt be anxius abut hw yu shuld defend yurself r what yu shuld say, fr the Hly Spirit will teach yu in that very hur what yu ught t say. Philippians 1:20 - as it is my eager expectatin and hpe that I will nt be at all ashamed, but that with full curage nw as always Christ will be hnred in my bdy, whether by life r by death.

This sectin fcuses n Paul s hpe. Apkaradkia (als seen in Rmans 8:19) indicates a state f great anticipatin f the future with the picture f the straining f the neck t catch a glimpse f what lies ahead. It is described as the cncentrated intense hpe which ignres ther interests (frm ap - away frm ), and strains frward as with utstretched head (frm kara - the head and dkein - thught, suppsed, t think, t seem, t appear ). The cmpund wrd means away frm head thinking, r thinking frward with utstretched head. Philippians 1:21 - Fr t me t live is Christ, and t die is gain. Paul s nly reasn fr life was Christ Paul s gain in death culd be ne f tw things: 1. 2 Cr. 5:8 - t be in the presence f the Lrd 2. Christ wuld be exalted by Paul s death and Paul wuld die testifying. Philippians 1:22 - If I am t live in the flesh, that means fruitful labr fr me. Yet which I shall chse I cannt tell.

Philippians 1:23 - I am hard pressed between the tw. My desire is t depart and be with Christ, fr that is far better. Philippians 1:24 - But t remain in the flesh is mre necessary n yur accunt. Philippians 1:25 - Cnvinced f this, I knw that I will remain and cntinuewith yu all, fr yur prgress and jy in the faith, New cnfidence suddenly draws Paul ut f his anticipatin f death. Why? Prphetic insight Psitive reprt frm curt A strng legal case that was t be presented Paul s wn thughts analyzing all that he had just written. The Greek says bth that Paul will cntinue and remain. These duble verbs indicate an emphasis. Prgress and jy

Philippians 1:26 - s that in me yu may have ample cause t glry in Christ Jesus, because f my cming t yu again. Philippians 1:27 - Only let yur manner f life be wrthy f the gspel f Christ, s that whether I cme and see yu r am absent, I may hear f yu that yu are standing firm in ne spirit, with y ne mind striving side by side fr the faith f the gspel, Philippians 1:28 - and nt frightened in anything by yur ppnents. This is a clear sign t them f their destructin, but f yur salvatin, and that frm Gd.

Philippians 1:29 - Fr it has been granted t yu that fr the sake f Christ yu shuld nt nly believe in him but als suffer fr his sake, Philippians 1:30 - engaged in the same cnflict that yu saw I had and nw hear that I still have.
