ANNOUNCEMENTS (Contact Andrea if you have questions or can help out.) SUNDAY NURSERY WORKER: Applications are being accepted for this paid position. FIRST RECONCILIATION CLASSES: Mondays from 6:00-7:30 pm, January 8, 22, 29, Feb 5. First Reconciliation: February 10, 10:00 am-noon in the Church. 2017 FIRST COMMUNION PHOTOS are ready now. Sorry for the delay. OLD TESTAMENT Balaam and His Donkey Numbers 22-24 Balaam was a seer. He received messages from God. A ruler named Balak wanted Balaam to help him with a situation. Balak was worried because the Hebrews were a large crowd of people who were moving through the desert all the way from Egypt into the land that we now call the Holy Land. Balak wanted Balaam to curse Hebrews. One day Balaam was riding on his donkey. Suddenly a huge angel stood in his path. The donkey moved out of the angel s way three times. Balaam was mad and started to punish the donkey. Finally the donkey started talking, Am I not your own donkey? At last Balaam blessed the Hebrew people instead of cursing them. NEW TESTAMENT The Sheep and the Goats Matthew 25: 31-46 Jesus tells us that one day He will return to earth, but we don t know when that will be. Matthew 24: 36 says As for the exact day or hour, no one knows except the Father. Jesus tells the parable of the Sheep and the Goats to remind us that we need to serve God in deeds or actions, not only in words and emotions. Then when Jesus comes, we will be ready. The sheep are the ones who feed the hungry, give water to the thirsty, welcome strangers, provide clothing, and visit the sick or people in prison. The goats are the ones who do not do these things. Wouldn t you rather be a sheep? How can you help feed the hungry or welcome the stranger? LEARNING ABOUT OUR FAITH The Liturgical Calendar Our four seasons in the ordinary world are Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall. Each season has its own special days. Winter might bring snow. Spring is for flowers, In summer we go to the beach to cool off, and in fall we go back to school. The Church has six seasons: Advent (purple), Christmas (white), Ordinary Time (green), Lent (purple), Easter (white), and Ordinary Time (green). Pick up a calendar provided by the Knights of Columbus. It will show you the seasons, the Holy Days of Obligation, and the saints days. Alphabet Soup for Kids S is for Samuel, the prophet who anointed the first Kings of Israel. S is for Stephen, the first Christian to be killed for his faith. S is for the sun created by God. PAGE 4

What gifts have I brought to this celebration to offer to the newborn Savior? BULLETIN DEADLINE 12 Noon Monday (Friday 4:30 pm when Monday is a Holiday) ONLINE PARISHIONER REGISTRATION & ONLINE GIVING Every person s finances and family situation is different. Jesus makes it clear that it matters not how much one gives, but that it is planned, calculated, at least somewhat sacrificial (see Luke 24:1-4), and not simply from what is leftover at the end of the month. We propose the tithe (10%) as the ideal every family can consider working towards. This means taking steps to give 5% to one s parish, and 5% to other charities or causes you have personal passion for. You can register online at www.saintbrendan.org and click on the link Online Registration/New Parishioner on lower left corner of website and to give online, click on the Online Giving link. It s quick, secure, convenient, and easy. Your support helps sustain our parish. If you need help with online giving, please call the Parish Office at 425-483-9400. PAGE 7
