Prelude Fanfare for the Common Man Robert Fasol, organist Aaron Copland ringing of the Bells Choral introit The Star-Spangled Banner Cantate Chamber Choir arr. Russell Mauldin O say can you see, by the dawn's early light, what so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming, Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight o'er the ramparts we watch'd were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air, gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. O, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave o'er the land of the free and the home of the brave? hymn 698 God of the Ages NATIONAL HYMN God of the ages, Whose almighty hand leads forth in beauty all the starry band of shining worlds in splendor through the skies, our grateful songs before Thy throne arise. offertory arr. Peter Wilhousky The Battle Hymn of the Republic Chancel Choir, Congregation, and Orchestra Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord; He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored; He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword; His truth is marching on. Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on! I have seen Him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps; they have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps; I can read His righteous sentence in the dim and flaring lamps, His day is marching on! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on. Erika Manning the gospel And Jesus went on with his disciples, to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his disciples, "Who do men say that I am?" And they told him, "John the Baptist; and others say, Elijah; and others one of the prophets." And he asked them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter answered him, "You are the Christ." And he charged them to tell no one about him. And he began to teach them that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. And he said this plainly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him. But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter, and said, "Get behind me, Satan! For you are not on the side of God, but of men." And he called to him the multitude with his disciples, and said to them, "If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life?" (Mark 8:27-36) This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Rev. Wendy Lambert A Life Worth Living From the Sermon Series: Questions: What Does Christ Ask of Us? sermon musical reflection Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor Rachel Barnard, soloist Lee Hoiby Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore, send these the homeless, tempest tossed to me: I lift my lamp beside the golden door. invitation to Christian discipleship If you desire to become a member of St. Luke s United Methodist Church, please refer to the announcement insert for additional information. hymn 437 This Is My Song FINDLANDIA This is my song, O God of all the nations, a song of peace for land afar and mine. This is my home, the country where my heart is; here are my hopes, my dreams, my holy shrine; but other hearts in other lands are beating with hopes and dreams as true and high as mine. My country's skies are bluer than the ocean, and sunlight beams on cloverleaf and pine; but other lands have sunlight too, and clover, and skies are everywhere as blue as mine. O hear my song, Thou God of all the nations, a song of peace for their land and for mine. This is my prayer, O Lord of all earth's kingdoms: Thy kingdom come; on earth Thy will be done. Let Christ be lifted up till all shall serve Him, and hearts united learn to live as one. O hear my prayer, Thou God of all the nations; myself I give Thee, let Thy will be done. sending forth We are no longer captives; we ve been set free. Christ brings us life and a life more abundant! He answered the questions of leaders with questions of his own. And He asked questions to those who were hurting to discover their deepest needs. When we read these questions it is good for us to consider, what does Christ ask of us?
