Hymn of Invocation: Patriotic Medley The Sixth Sunday after Pentecost July 1, 2018 8:00am America, the Beautiful O beautiful for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain For purple mountain majesties, above the fruited plain America, America, God shed His grace on thee And crown thy good with brotherhood, from sea to shining sea. O beautiful for heroes proved, in liberating strife Who more than self their country loved, and mercy more than life America, America, May God they gold refine Till all success be nobleness, and every gain divine. Eternal Father Eternal Father, strong to save, whose arm does bind the restless wave, Who bids the mighty ocean deep Its own appointed limits keep; O hear us when we cry to Thee For those in peril on the sea. O Trinity of love and pow'r, Your children shield in danger's hour; From rock and tempest, fire, and foe, protect them where-so-e'er they go; Thus, evermore shall rise to Thee Glad hymns of praise from land and sea. God of Our Fathers God of the ages, whose almighty hand leads forth in beauty all the starry band of shining worlds in splendor through the skies, our grateful songs before thy throne arise. Thy love divine hath led us in the past; in this free land with thee our lot is cast; be thou our ruler, guardian, guide, and stay, thy Word our law, thy paths our chosen way. Refresh thy people on their toilsome way; lead us from night to never-ending day; fill all our lives with love and grace divine, and glory, laud, and praise be ever thine. 2

Stand Confession and Absolution The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism. P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination. P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. This Is the Feast 5

Salutation and Collect of the Day P Let us pray. P Heavenly Father, during His earthly ministry Your Son Jesus healed the sick and raised the dead. By the healing medicine of the Word and Sacraments pour into our hearts such love toward You that we may live eternally; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Sit Old Testament Reading Lamentations 3:22 33 22 The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; 23 they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. 24 The LORD is my portion, says my soul, therefore I will hope in him. 6

25 The LORD is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. 26 It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD. 27 It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth. 28 Let him sit alone in silence when it is laid on him; 29 let him put his mouth in the dust there may yet be hope; 30 let him give his cheek to the one who strikes, and let him be filled with insults. 31 For the Lord will not cast off forever, 32 but, though he cause grief, he will have compassion according to the abundance of his steadfast love; 33 for he does not willingly afflict or grieve the children of men. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Psalm Psalm 30 (antiphon: v. 10) P Hear, O LORD, and be merciful to me! C O LORD, be my helper! P I will extol you, O LORD, for you have drawn me up C and have not let my foes rejoice over me. P O LORD my God, I cried to you for help, C and you have healed me. P O LORD, you have brought up my soul from Sheol; C you restored me to life from among those who go down to the pit. P Sing praises to the LORD, O you his saints, C and give thanks to his holy name. P For his anger is but for a moment, and his favor is for a lifetime. C Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning. P As for me, I said in my prosperity, C I shall never be moved. 7

P By your favor, O LORD, you made my mountain stand strong; C you hid your face; I was dismayed. P To you, O LORD, I cry, C and to the Lord I plead for mercy: P What profit is there in my death, if I go down to the pit? C Will the dust praise you? Will it tell of your faithfulness? P Hear, O LORD, and be merciful to me! C O LORD, be my helper! P You have turned for me my mourning into dancing; C you have loosed my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness, P that my glory may sing your praise and not be silent. C O LORD my God, I will give thanks to you forever! ALL: Glory be to the Father and the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. P Hear, O LORD, and be merciful to me! C O LORD, be my helper! Epistle 2 Corinthians 8:1-9, 13-15 1 We want you to know, brothers, about the grace of God that has been given among the churches of Macedonia, 2 for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. 3 For they gave according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own free will, 4 begging us earnestly for the favor of taking part in the relief of the saints 5 and this, not as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then by the will of God to us. 6 Accordingly, we urged Titus that as he had started, so he should complete among you this act of grace. 7 But as you excel in everything in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all earnestness, and in our love for you see that you excel in this act of grace also. 8 I say this not as a command, but to prove by the earnestness of others that your love also is genuine. 9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich 26 13 I do not mean that others should be eased and you burdened, but that as a matter of fairness 14 your abundance at the present time should supply their need, so that their abundance may supply your need, that there may be fairness. 15 As it is written, Whoever gathered much had nothing left over, and whoever gathered little had no lack. 8

A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Stand Alleluia and Verse Holy Gospel Mark 5:21-43 P The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the fifth chapter. 21 When Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered about him, and he was beside the sea. 22 Then came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, and seeing him, he fell at his feet 23 and implored him earnestly, saying, My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live. 24 And he went with him. And a great crowd followed him and thronged about him. 25 And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, 26 and who had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better but rather grew worse. 27 She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment. 28 For she said, If I touch even his garments, I will be made well. 29 And immediately the flow of blood dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. 30 And Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone out from him, immediately turned about in the crowd and said, Who touched my garments? 31 And his disciples said to him, You see the crowd 9

pressing around you, and yet you say, Who touched me? 32 And he looked around to see who had done it. 33 But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling and fell down before him and told him the whole truth. 34 And he said to her, Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease. 35 While he was still speaking, there came from the ruler s house some who said, Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further? 36 But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, Do not fear, only believe. 37 And he allowed no one to follow him except Peter and James and John the brother of James. 38 They came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and Jesus saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. 39 And when he had entered, he said to them, Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but sleeping. 40 And they laughed at him. But he put them all outside and took the child s father and mother and those who were with him and went in where the child was. 41 Taking her by the hand he said to her, Talitha cumi, which means, Little girl, I say to you, arise. 42 And immediately the girl got up and began walking (for she was twelve years of age), and they were immediately overcome with amazement. 43 And he strictly charged them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat. and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life T of the world to come. Amen. Service of the Sacrament Preface It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who on this day overcame death and the grave and by His glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying: 12

Sanctus Prayer of Thanksgiving P Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross. Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen. The Words of Our Lord 13

Proclamation of Christ P As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord s death until He comes. C Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. P O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray: Lord's Prayer C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. Pax Domini 14

Post-Communion Collect A Let us pray. A We give thanks to You, almighty God, that You have refreshed us through this salutary gift, and we implore You that of Your mercy You would strengthen us through the same in faith toward You and in fervent love toward one another; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. The Lord Jesus Is Faithful, and in Mercy He Raises You Up from Death to Life The Lord is faithful. His steadfast love never ceases, and his mercies never come to an end (Lam. 3:22 23). To keep us in repentance and to make our faith grow, He causes grief for a while, but He does not cast off forever; in due time, he will have compassion (Lam. 3:31 33). Therefore, hope in him, and wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord, for the Lord is good to those who wait for him (Lam. 3:24 26). That is what the woman did who had a discharge of blood, and also the ruler whose daughter was at the point of death. Each waited on the mercy of the Lord Jesus, and each received His saving help (Mark 5:21 28). The woman had suffered much for 12 years, and the ruler s daughter had already died before Jesus arrived. Yet at the right time, the woman was immediately healed of her disease, and the little girl got up and began walking (Mark 5:29, 42). Such is the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, who humbled Himself unto the extreme poverty of death so that you by his poverty might become rich, even unto life everlasting (2 Cor. 8:9).
