Seventh Sunday After Pentecost Service of Word and Sacrament July 3, 2016 God is the source of our nourishment. Our Lord s invitation to take and eat take and drink is a repeated one. In the holy eucharist, in the word read and proclaimed, in the assembly of the people of God, the dominion of God has come near. Rejoice! Your name is written in heaven. Gathering The Holy Spirit gathers us to worship. WELCOME SPECIAL MUSIC I Hear America Singing! arr. Albrecht/Althouse This piece, performed by members of the Metropolitan Boys Choir, features many familiar national songs that are paired with well-known quotations. The congregation is invited to sing with MBC as able. I hear America singing! I hear America singing! I hear America! I hear America! I hear America! My country tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. Land where my fathers died, land of the pilgrim s pride, From ever mountainside let freedom ring, ring, ring, ring! O beautiful for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain; For purple mountain majesties above the fruited plain! America! America! God shed His grace on thee, And crown thy good with brotherhood, From sea to shining sea Let music swell the breeze, and ring from all the trees sweet freedom s song. Let mortal tongues awake, let all that breathe partake; Let rocks their silence break, the sound prolong.
OPENING HYMN Not Alone for Mighty Empire LBW 437 GREETING The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Most merciful God, we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and made us alive together with Christ. By grace you have been saved. In the name of Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven. Almighty God strengthen you with power through the Holy Spirit, that Christ may live in your hearts through faith. 2

PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us together pray. O God, the Father of our Lord Jesus, you are the city that shelters us, the mother who comforts us. With your Spirit, accompany us on our life s journey, that we may spread your peace in all the world, through your Son, Jesus Chris, our Savior and Lord. Word God speaks to us in scriptures read, sung, and preached. A WORD FOR CHILDREN PSALM Refrain: Psalm 66:1-9 1 Be joyful in God, all you lands; be joyful, all the earth. 2 Sing the glory of God s name; sing the glory of God s praise. 3 Say to God, How awesome are your deeds! Because of your great strength your enemies cringe before you. 4 All the earth bows down before you, sings to you, sings out your name. R 5 Come now and see the works of God, how awesome are God s deeds toward all people. 6 God turned the sea into dry land, so that they went through the wa- ter on foot, and there we re- joiced in God. 7 Ruling forever in might, God keeps watch o- ver the nations; let no rebels ex- alt themselves. 8 Bless our God, you peoples; let the sound of praise be heard. 9 Our God has kept us a- mong the living and has not allowed our feet to slip. GOSPEL READING Luke 10:1-11, 16-20 Pew Bible p. 844 Word of God. Word of life. Thanks be to God. SERMON HYMN OF THE DAY This Is My Song ELW 887 APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.
