For Christians, the week preceding Easter is known as Holy Week. It begins on Palm Sunday and is traditionally a week of somber reflection on the events preceding Jesus death: his triumphant entry into Jerusalem; his betrayal by Judas; his Last Supper with his twelve apostles; his arrest, crucifixion and death; and his burial in a tomb. What Is Palm Sunday? (April 1 this year.) We celebrate Jesus procession into Jerusalem, which occurred several days before his death. According to the gospels, the people of Jerusalem spread branches from trees identified specifically as palm branches in John's gospel on the road to welcome Jesus as he rode a donkey into the city. Because of this, we give palm fronds to all who enter the church on Palm Sunday. What Is Maundy Thursday? (April 5 this year.) We mark Jesus Last Supper with his disciples a Passover meal the night before his death. During the meal, Jesus broke bread and offered his follower s wine, saying This is my body and my blood, given for you. This event is Jesus institution of Holy Communion, one of the two sacraments of the Lutheran church (the other is Holy Baptism). What Is Good Friday? (April 6 this year.) Good Friday is observance of the day Jesus was crucified and died. It is the most somber day on the Christian calendar. Our worship includes readings from the gospel stories of Jesus' arrest, trial and death. What Is Easter? (April 8 this year.) Easter is the most important Christian holiday, surpassing even Christmas. As a celebration of the day Jesus rose from the dead, Easter symbolizes forgiveness, rebirth, and God s saving power. On this day, God s power and victory over sin, death, and all destructive forces in people s lives is made known. Read more: www.beliefnet.com Holy Week Worship Schedule on the back cover

Page 2 Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Chur ch Meditation for Good Friday and Easter We have visited the wilderness places of our lives these 40 days of Lent. This meditation on Jesus death and resurrection, as well as wilderness places we experience, is written as a devotion to use each day of Holy Week. Almighty God, by whose Word, Space, and Time came into being and take their course, grant us the peace to be still, to reflect on the past, to rest in this moment and to embrace the life that is yet to be. Heal in us memories of fear, failure and sadness, help us to hold fast to all our treasured knowledge of you, and keep us open to all you have yet to give us in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen On Good Friday, Pilate had a notice put on the Cross: Jesus of Nazareth King of the Jews and refused to change it. It appears on crosses today abbreviated by INRI. The two I's are really J's, in this case, Jesus and Jews; N for Nazareth; and R for Rex (Latin for King) Lord Jesus, as you treasure each of us, help us to treasure each other. And, as we treasure each other, help us to treasure you above all. We pray with, and for: People who helplessly wait out the suffering of loved ones: families and friends of people with chronic or terminal illnesses; caregivers for people with mental illness or dementia; all of us as we witness people's suffering on the news every evening. Give them courage, patience, and hope in you. Amen. (Silence) We pray with, and for: People in various forms of imprisonment: people serving time for their crimes; political prisoners, held by unjust regimes; people imprisoned in abusive or violent relationships; all those who are enslaved by addiction and long for release. For those who are held in the chains of their own certainties. (Silence) Jesus conquered death and so made life more important for everyone who believes in Him. We pray with, and for: People on the verge of making a new start; people preparing for marriage or commitment to a relationship; people expecting the arrival of a new baby; people recovering from illness or otherwise beginning on a new lease of life. People longing for a break, or a change of fortune. Let God fill your mind with forgiveness and love. Hear again the words of grace: Your sins are forgiven. Hear also the words of promise: Behold I am with you always. Open your heart to the chance to start again. (Silence) Beginning today, on Easter morning, Lord Jesus, we are children again, free from sin and doubt, belonging to You in love. Beginning today, Lord Jesus, we embrace your presence in our own lives, past, present, and future. Beginning today, Lord Jesus, we claim the abundant life you promised and with you we say Your prayer to your Father and ours... Close with the Lord's Prayer. Pastor Bonnie Wilcox Online Giving (aka Simply Giving) is a free service to you, and benefits the church s cash flow all year. Apr il 2012 Page 3 Pastoral Transition Update We ve said good-bye well to Pastor Hans. And we ve been sad about that for ourselves, but happy for Hans. In six years, through our church, God prepared him for the next new call for his life. One of our Synod staff members said to me, GA should be proud that a pastor left to grow in another place who was called, trained, mentored, and appreciated by your congregation. The Church Council is partnering with our Synod (the Saint Paul Area Synod) of our national denomination (the ELCA) to prayerfully consider how and when to call a new associate pastor. By the time you read this newsletter, a shortterm contract with an interim pastor (see definition below) will be finalized. We expect he will begin serving at GA in mid-april. A committee is being formed to work on our Ministry Site Profile, a document that identifies our congregation s gifts and needs for mission and ministry, will be in progress. This is a time for prayer and conversation about the leadership needs of our community for the future. Your prayers for our leaders and our community are needed and appreciated. What Kind of Pastor is That? Our staff will soon include an interim pastor. This is a relatively unique term among clergy, so it might be helpful to provide a primer on the different roles pastors may take in a church. Interim pastor is a temporary shepherd trained to lead a church through specific steps toward a healthy arrival of the new pastor. An interim pastor is not a candidate to become the next pastor, but is a seasoned minister who has a wealth of experience, training, and skills with which to move a church forward during the interim period. GA Church will have an interim pastor until a new associate pastor is called to serve at our church. Senior pastor (or Lead pastor) - provides spiritual and pastoral leadership to the church, and is the chief administrator of the congregation so that it might fulfill its mission and purpose as the body of Christ. The Senior Pastor will preach, teach, and administer the Sacraments and give primary leadership in the ministries of Worship, Administration, Stewardship, and Outreach. Rev. Bonnie Wilcox is the senior pastor of this church. Associate pastor - is someone who has separate duties from the Senior pastor, but also is called to preach, teach, and administer the Sacraments. The duties of an associate pastor depend on the church s mission and its size, but often have focus on a specific area, such as youth outreach. The Associate pastor will fill in for the Senior pastor when s/he is away. [Rev. Hans Dahl served this call while at GA.] Visitation pastor - provides pastoral care for the sick and home-bound members of the church, through regular visitation and participation in the sacrament of Holy Communion. Rev. Susan Schoon performs these functions for our church and works twenty hours per month. Intern pastor is a person in training to become a pastor. They have either completed most, if not all, of their formal academic training, and are ready for additional learning within a congregation. An intern benefits a church by becoming a community project, one who offers their gifts, but also needs the nurture and instruction of a congregation. GA does not have an intern pastor at this time.

The Prayer Labyrinth: Holy Week will be set up in the Fireside Room during Holy Week to walk, pray and meditate. What is a labyrinth? Originally found in French cathedrals, it is a way to have a quiet, private, worshipful experience. It differs from a maze in that it is not meant to confuse, but has the same entrance and exit point which leads a person in to a central spot and then out again. You can pray or meditate as you walk. Instructions will be available in the Fireside Room. Up Coming Worship Events Men s Breakfast & Good Friday Service Good Friday, April 6, 7:00am. ESL classes are part of Starfish Ministries lease of space at GA.

My family and I will never forget your generosity, warmth and significant well-wishes. We are so fortunate to have spent 6 wonderful years with all of you.
