DIVERSE YET ONE IN CHRIST THANK OFFERING THEME 2018 For as in one body we have many members, and not all the members have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another. We have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us... (Romans 12:4-6a NRSV) is the theme of the 2018 Thank Offering of Presbyterian Women. Promote the 2018 offering in English- and Spanish-speaking congregations with a bilingual packet of promotional materials featuring recipients, images, and scripture for the 2018 Thank Offering. STONE CHURCH PW had the pleasure to support the Thank Offering application of Rev. Dr. Karen Hagan Webster and her husband Rev. Travis Webster. Karen is the daughter of Linda Hagan who many of you remember as a faithful PW leader for many years. Pictured here they are at the booth celebrating their Thank Offering Gift. There were 83 applicants and they were one of the 16 to be selected. We are excited to congratulate them and the team they put together to achieve this gift. The program will receive $26,840 to support the creation of gardens for refugee families in Decatur, Georgia. This will be in collaboration with the Healthy Seminarians-Healthy Church Initiative. Read more about it and the other programs that will benefit from our giving in the July/August Horizons Magazine. Thank Offering project by Karen and Travis will provide educational opportunities related to Learning Good Gardening Practices to nourish God s people Page 5

God s Promise Through Music PWP FALL GATHERING Saturday October 6, 2018 2:00 4:00 p.m Palo Alto-Covenant Presbyterian Church 670 E. Meadow Drive, Palo Alto Don t miss this exciting program Let me introduce Our special guest for the fall gathering Rev. Karen Hastings-Flegel. She is currently the Associate Pastor of Music and Pastoral Care at Grace Presbyterian Church in Walnut Creek. Her rich experience includes serving as Organist at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Palo Alto, and Organist/Director of Music at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Concord, and also First Congregational Church of Antioch. During this time she took up choir directing which she continues with as part of her current role at Grace Presbyterian Church. Choir directing changed my life by forcing me to talk in front of groups, transforming me from a painfully shy person to one who is quite outgoing. I joined the church, started hand-bell and children s choirs, and eventually became a deacon, says Hastings-Flegel. It was while taking a year off from directing choirs that she began to hear the call to pastoral ministry. In 2004, Dr. Hastings-Flegel entered Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley with the goal of becoming a pastor. She graduated with a M.Div. in 2010 and an M.A. in Biblical Languages in 2012 (emphasizing Greek). Her pastoral internships were at Community Presbyterian Church of Pittsburg and Grace Presbyterian Church of Walnut Creek. From 2008-2013, she served on the Presbyterian Committee on Congregational Song (PCOCS), which chose the contents of the most recent Presbyterian hymnal, Glory to God, which is used in Presbyterian Churches throughout the United States. We will celebrate PW s birthday with music, song, cake and special guests. Page 7
