Summer 2011 Recommended Resources North Carolina Conference Media Center United Methodist Church This summer, have some fun with your small group or Sunday School class. The resources recommended below offer fun and uplifting perspectives on Bible study and Christian living for adults, youth, and children. Contact the Media Center at 800 849 4433 x264 or www.nccumc.org/mediacenter to make a request. Resources for Adults and Youth The Entertainment Ministry Steve Skelton's Bible studies based on classic television and film have provided fun and engaging lessons for many Sunday School classes. The Mayberry series based on The Andy Griffith Show is the most popular selection for churches in the NC Conference, but Skelton also uses The Beverly Hillbillies, The Lucy Show, and Gilligan's Island to teach Christian messages. For men's groups and any other fans of Western films, Skelton also offers a Bible study based on John Wayne's most Christian movie, The Angel and the Badman. Each of Skelton's studies features video clips, discussion questions, and a reproducible study guide. The Media Center owns a certificate of copyright for each of these study guides so that you can make copies for everyone in your group. Each study offers four sessions except for the Gilligan's Island study that offers seven sessions and the Mayberry Moments DVD that offers 40 short video illustrations for use in Sunday School or sermons. The Media Center offers these study books with leader guides that use Dr. Suess books and episodes of The Simpsons, Futurama, Family Guy, King of the Hill, and The Simpsons Movie as allegories or as lenses through which to view biblically based Christian lessons. The book for The Simpsons study even includes a special "green retreat" that utilizes Al Gore's movie, An Inconvenient Truth. The actual books by Dr. Seuss can be obtained from your local library, bookstore, or church members. Episodes of The Simpsons and the other shows can be rented from your local video store. Earlier this year, the Media Center posted a review of The Gospel According to Dr. Seuss on our website. Both of these studies are of use and interest to adults and youth of all ages. Praying in New & Creative Ways We often use only words to pray, but what if we used our whole bodies to move or our mind's eye to draw? What if we could develop these practices to allow for continuous prayer throughout the day? That is just what Sybil MacBeth and Roy DeLeon teach us to do in their books Praying in Color and Praying with the Body from Paraclete Press. These books are designed to help everyone release new and creative ways of communicating with God. No previous skill or ability is required. Many of the movements can be completed from a sitting position. Each kit includes an instructional book and DVD. BK599 Praying with the Body: Bringing the Psalms to Life Book DVD314 Praying with the Body: Bringing the Psalms to Life DVD KIT96 Praying in Color: Drawing a New Path to God Blockbuster Movies Two of the biggest blockbusters this year will be Part Two of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, scheduled to release on July 15th, and Part One of Breaking Dawn, scheduled to release on November 18th. Do your church members understand the faith messages portrayed in these movies? The Media Center has two studies to help you examine the stories in these films from a Christian perspective. Steve Skelton has released a 3 session DVD study on Harry Potter to be followed by a similar study on Twilight later this summer. We also have a book based study that covers all of the books and films in the Twilight series. Resources for Children Missions for Children Summer is a great time to lead your children's group into missional service. The United Methodist Women published a new study for children last year that revolves around the concept of a hot air balloon. Hugging the World: Faith, Hope, Love in Action for kids in grades K 6 "takes children on a hot air balloon journey around the globe to explore God's mission in various countries and cultures." Each of the five interactive sessions offers a Bible lesson and hands on activity. The final session offers an optional intergenerational activity. ZOE Ministry also produced a mission study for children last year. The ZOE study, Children's Mission Moments, teaches children about ZOE's work with orphans in Zimbabwe and what their lives are like. Each of the five sessions offers a mission opportunity for the children. The ZOE study is available for free online or a DVD version can be borrowed from the Media Center. BK717 Hugging the World: Faith, Hope, Love in Action DVD380 Children's Mission Moments Food Fun Devotions This book offers over 40 food crafts, devotions, games, experiments, and service projects that teach a biblical lesson. Each activity tells you the purpose of the lesson, the supplies you will need, what you will need to prepare beforehand, discussion questions, a dig deeper activity, life applications, and a step by step walkthrough of the activity. Fun for Sunday School, child care, and family fellowship. BK334 Food Fun Devotions for Children's Ministry

Bible Crafts for Children While school is out, give the kids a constructive project with a product to take home and teach Bible lessons to parents. The Media Center has several books full of crafts that children can do to learn Bible lessons. Many of our other books for children's ministries also incorporate crafts as part of their lessons. BK25 Crafts of Many Cultures BK58 Creative Bible Crafts for Grades 3 & 4 BK80 The Good Steward's Craft Book: We Remember Jesus BK81 The Good Steward's Craft Book: God's People Become a Nation Games for All FaithShapes! Share your faith and learn about the symbols of the church as you play the FaithShapes! card game. The full color cards include 32 pairs of symbols, each with a brief explanation. Turn the cards face down for a matching game or play as a "Go Fish" game. Fun for all ages, nursery through adult. An easy activity for spare class time or as a learning center for intergenerational classes. An online version is available. GAME1 FaithShapes! The Card Game of Christian Symbols

Bible Trivia Books Each of these books contains over 400 questions (with answers in the back) about the Bible to challenge your knowledge. For ages 12 to adult. Suggestions for using the questions for a trivia game are included. BK748 Bible Trivia Book: People of the Bible BK749 Bible Trivia Book: Old Testament History BK750 Bible Trivia Book: Life of Jesus BK751 Bible Trivia Book: New Testament Church Mudpie Olympics This spiral bound book from Abingdon Press offers 100 "nonedible" games for youth, older children, and adults. The games include "icebreakers, crowd pleasers, radical relays and races, volleyball variations and other sweaty stuff, bonding games, and strictly quiet games." BK387 Mudpie Olympics and 99 Other Nonedible Games Multicultural Games This book for kids in grades 1 6 offers over 70 traditional games from 30 countries around the world. Is your church involved in international mission work? This book provides fun ways to teach everyone in your church about other cultures. Although designed for children, many of the games would be interesting and fun for youth and adults as well. This book would make an excellent companion to an intergenerational, multicultural event.
