July 9-10, 2016 Movie Unit: Creation and God s Image Genesis 1-2; Romans 8:28 God made us in his image. First 10 minutes of the service hour: Engage kids in cooperative play activities to help them connect to other kids Next 5 minutes: Connect Time Instead of focusing on doing things the right way, focus on doing the right thing. Sometimes that might mean sacrificing how controlled the classroom is, just so you can connect with a kid who s struggling to fit in or behave. Next 25 minutes: Large Group Last 25 minutes: Small Group As kids leave, ask them why they made mirror pictures! We re continuing our summer movie series with the story of creation and how God carefully crafted us in his own image.

GOAL: Connect Time is all about engaging kids in an activity that allows them to connect with each other right away while piquing their curiosity for Large Group and preparing their minds for what they re going to hear. WOULD YOU RATHER? (INVENTION STYLE!) Gather kids into one large group and choose a volunteer to be the leader. Ask: Do you know what an invention is? (Let kids respond.) Say: An invention is something that is created and used for a special purpose. There are LOTS of different kinds of inventions. Tell kids that you re going to give them a choice between two inventions, and they have to choose which one they like the best. If they like the first choice, they have to go to one side of the room, and if they like the second choice, they have to go to the other side of the room! Give the following options, and make sure to point to the side of room that goes with each choice. Would you rather have. An airplane or a car? A phone or an ipad? A submarine or a motorcycle? A can opener or a pencil? A microwave or a lamp? A hot air balloon or a flashlight? A TV or a computer? A clock or a TV remote control? A video game or a swing set? TALK ABOUT IT What s the BEST invention you can think of? Why are inventions a good thing? Before you go to Large Group, you can ask kids how their week went. You can also remind kids of the expectations for Large Group behavior: (1) be kind, (2) listen when somebody speaks, and (3) follow the leader s instructions.

Goal: Kids will (1) recognize that God created us with a purpose, (2) understand that we were created in God s image, and (3) thank God for making us unique and special. Why? God treasures all his creation, but he was especially excited about making US! We want kids to understand that they are valued in God s eyes, so much so, that he made us in his own image! Tip: To help kids come up with things they think God loves about them, give some personal examples of things that you think God loves about you! REVIEW THE STORY 1. What was God s favorite creation? (Us!) 2. Whom did God create us to be like? (Himself.) 3. Why did God make us in his own image? (Let kids speculate.) 4. What different ways did God make us like himself? a. He gave us creativity and imaginations so that we could make and build things. b. He made us to be close to other people and show love to our friends and family. 5. Did God make any mistakes when he created us? (Never.) 6. What do you love about yourself? 7. What do you think God loves about you? MAKE IT PERSONAL Give each kid 1 mirror board. Set out markers and crayons. Tell kids that we re going to make a picture of ourselves on this mirror, but not just a regular picture. We want to show a picture of how God made us special! Encourage kids to use the markers and crayons to make a picture on the back of the mirror that shows how they are unique. It can be just a picture of their face, or it can be a picture of them doing something they love, like playing baseball or singing! Give kids a heart sticker to put somewhere on the mirror, to remind them how loved they are by God! Extra time? Have kids do a coloring page. After that, have kids play a game of Would You Rather, using examples of God s creation as choices. Tell them to choose between the (Continued on next page.)

following sets of creations that God made. If they like the first option, they should move to one side of the room (or raise their hand, etc.) If they like the second option, they should move to another side of the room, etc: Water or sky Lions or tigers Trees or flowers Outer space or under the deepest parts of the sea Sand or dirt Fish or birds Sun or moon Butterflies or bumblebees Alligators or hippopotamuses Make up as many as you want!

Keep in mind that not all kids grow up in an environment where they re told how valued and loved they are. This is an opportunity for you to build into these kids and help them understand that they are beloved children of God. WELCOME AND INTRO Main Goal: Review Connect Time and introduce the lesson. Today we ll watch a video clip from the movie Big Hero Six! Check it out on the keynote presentation when you re setting up and getting ready for kids to arrive. *Click to play intro music. Welcome: Hey everybody! I m so glad you came to Kids Club today. Ask: Did you have fun deciding which inventions you like the most? (Let kids respond.) What are some of your favorite inventions? (Call on several kids to share what they discussed in Connect Time.) I love those too, I don t know what we would do without all those things! Ask: Do you remember what we said an invention was? (Let a kid respond.) Yep, it s something that is created and used for a special purpose. Let s look at some inventions on the screen right now. I m going to ask you what each invention is used for, and if you know the answer, shout it out! (Click to show image of TV.) What do we use this for? (Let kids answer: to watch TV.) (Click to show image of microwave.) What do we use this for? (Let kids answer: to heat up food.) (Click to show image of a bike.) What do we use this for? (Let kids answer: to ride on and go places, etc.) Say: Good job, guys! An invention always has a purpose. That means that whoever created it, wanted to use it for something special!

BAMAX HAS A PURPOSE Main Goal: Use a Big Hero Six movie clip to illustrate the idea of how a creation has a purpose. GOD MADE US WITH A PURPOSE Main Goal: Recognize that God created us with a purpose in mind. Say: Today we re going to talk about the greatest inventor, the one who created the entire universe. Do you know who I m talking about? (Let kids respond.) Yep, it s God! He created everything, but one thing is more special than anything else in the whole world. Do you know what God s most special creation is? (Let kids respond.) PEOPLE! Say: Before we talk more about how we know that, we re going to talk about another invention. This invention is actually kind of a like a person, and his name is Bamax, from the movie Big Hero Six. As you watch this movie clip, try to figure out WHY Bamax was made. Video: Big Hero Six / Bamax Ask: So why was Bamax created? (Let kids respond.) Say: That s right, he was made to help people, and be their personal healthcare companion! I sure would love to have my own Bamax. He has a pretty cool purpose, doesn t he? Say: When you create something, or invent someone like Bamax, you have a plan for that creation. You have a purpose for it. It s like all those inventions we talked about earlier. They all had a purpose, and that s why they re good inventions. Ask: Do you think God also had a special purpose when he decided to make us? (Let kids respond.) Say: Absolutely! He knew EXACTLY what he wanted us to be. We were carefully designed with a purpose in mind, just like Bamax was. Say: I m going to ask you about some reasons that God might have made us. If you think it s TRUE, then give me a thumbs up. If you think it s NOT TRUE, then give me a thumbs down. Ready? Did God make us because he wanted to spend time with people and show them love? (Let kids respond with a thumbs up.) Yes! Did God make us because he thought we would be good dancers? (Let kids respond.) Ha, probably not! That would be pretty silly, even though he loves it when we dance for him. Did God make us because he wanted to create people that are like him? (Let kids respond with a thumbs up. They may or may not know this.) Yes!

MADE IN GOD S IMAGE Main Goal: Using Genesis 1:27, help kids understand that God made us in his image. HOW ARE WE LIKE GOD? Main Goal: Identify specific ways that we are made in God s image. Say: God DID make us to be like him! Let s read a verse from the Bible that tells us all about it. Slide: Genesis 1:27 So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. Say: When it says that God created us in his own image, that means that he created us to be like him! Now, do you think that means that we just look exactly like God? (Let kids respond.) We don t know exactly what God looks like, but we do know that he made us like him in a lot of different ways! Let s talk about what those ways are. (Click to show image of creativity.) Ask: What do you see in this picture? (Let kids kids answer: paintbrush, musical instruments, people building things, etc.) Say: Good job! These are all ways that we use our imaginations and create things. Did you know that God has a big imagination? He loves to create and make beautiful things! That s why He used his imagination and made us each unique and special. (Click to show image of people.) Ask: What do you see in this picture? (Let kids answer: people, friends, family, etc.) Say: Yes! This pictures shows all kinds of people together. There are grownups with their kids, and friends hanging out. Do you all like to spend time with people and be close to them? (Let kids respond.) Me too. God is the same, and that s another way that he made us like him. (Click to show image of thought bubble.) Say: Now think of something YOU like to do, or something you re really good at. Maybe you like to sing, or maybe you re really good at drawing. Whatever it is, think about it right now. (Give kids a few seconds of silence.) Say: No matter what that thing is, God made you that way, because he wanted you to have something special and unique that makes you like him. He didn t want us all to be the same, so he gave us all different gifts and abilities.

WE RE PART OF GOD S PLAN Main Goal: Use Romans 8: 28 to help kids understand God has a plan for us. WE RE PART OF GOD S PLAN (cont.) Main Goal: Act out motions to help kids memorize Romans 8:28. WRAP UP AND WORSHIP Main Goal: Close the lesson with prayer and worship. Say: We re going to look at another verse that tells us all about how God designed us ahead of time, and planned for us to be a part of his special family. Let s all read this together. (Lead kids in repeating the verse out loud.) Slide: Romans 8:28 And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love Him, and are called according to his purpose for them. Say: Great job! We re going to learn some motions to go along with this verse that can help us memorize it! Act out: (Do the following motions while repeating each section of the verse) Romans 8:28: And we know (Point to your head) That God causes everything (Spread your arms out wide) To work together (Put one fist on top of the other, than switch) For the good of those who love Him (Put your hands across your heart) And are called according to his purpose for them. (Put your hand to your ear.) Say: Great job everybody! God was so excited when he first created us, because he made us to be like him and to spend time with him. He loves every one of us, and he NEVER makes mistakes. He makes us exactly as we are meant to be. Say: Let s pray, and then we ll show God how glad we are to be made in his image, by worshipping him! Pray: God, thank you for creating us to be like you. We re so glad we get to be made in your image. Amen! Set up worship: Are you ready to worship God and show him how much we love him? Let s all stand up and spend some quality time with him. Music Video: Boss of Me Song: Before I Go
