Old Greenwich, THE FIRST CONGREGATIONAL United Church Connecticut CHURCH OF GREENWICH of Christ Celebrating 350 Years ~ 1665-2015 Celebrating Greenwich Founder s Day Sunday, July 19, 2015 10 o clock in the morning The landing in 1640 of the first settlers of Greenwich

So on May 11, 1665 at a meeting of the General Court in Hartford with Governor Winthrop presiding, Greenwich was granted a charter: Upon ye motion and desire of ye people of Greenwich this court doth declare that Greenwich shalbe a Township intire of itself provided they procure and maintaine an Orthodox minister and in the meane time and until yt be effected they are to attend ye ministery at Stamford and contribute proportionably with Stamford to ye maintenance of the ministery there. The First Three Hundred Years The History of The First Congregational Church of Greenwich, CT

W elcome to this service of worship at The First Congregational Church of Greenwich. Today we celebrate Greenwich Founder s Day and welcome Peter Tesei, our First Selectman, who will read the Founder s Day Proclamation. We hope that your spirit will be touched and inspired by our time together, and we invite you to join us for lunch following worship. PREPARING FOR WORSHIP Please silence all cell phones and other electronic devices. *All who are able please stand. PRELUDE Dorothy Darlington, oboe Dr. Craig Scott Symons, piano Allegro for Oboe and Piano Alessandro Marcello (1673-1747) CALL TO COMMUNITY Please sign and pass the red book. Rev. Richard S. DenUyl, Jr. PROCLAMATION Peter Tesei, First Selectman of the Town of Greenwich INTRODUCTION TO SERVICE CONCH SHELL Jeff Aselin *HYMN All people that on earth do dwell, sing to the Lord with cheerful voice: him serve with mirth, his praise forth tell, come ye before him and rejoice. The Lord, ye know, is God indeed; without our aid he did us make: we are his folk, he doth us feed, and for his sheep he doth us take.

O enter then his gates with praise, approach with joy his courts unto; praise, laud, and bless his Name always, for it is seemly so to do. For why? the Lord our God is good, his mercy is forever sure; his truth at all times firmly stood, and shall from age to age endure. To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, the God whom heaven and earth adore, from men and from the angel host be praise and glory evermore. PRAYER OF INVOCATION (in unison) Rev. Richard S. DenUyl, Jr. Praise to you, O God, for the gift of your church: From humble beginnings in private homes, to cathedrals that grace skylines around the world, for the thousands of smaller congregations that dot every city and town across America. Praise to you, O God, for the faithful: For first century martyrs and mystics. For theologians, poets and musicians of every age. For people of all backgrounds and beliefs, who gather on Sunday morning to give thanks for your justice, forgiveness and peace. Praise be to you, O God, for The First Congregational Church of Greenwich: An ever present, ever faithful congregation that, for 350 years, has been a beacon of faith, hope and love to the town and beyond; a congregation who in our laughter and play, our work and prayer, seek to weave your Spirit into the beauty and the mundane of everyday life. Be with us now, Great God, as we honor the past, celebrate the present and lean into the future. All of this we pray in Jesus name, and we pray together as he taught us saying, LORD'S PRAYER ( debts ) RESPONSIVE READING Psalm 146 Dr. Craig Scott Symons Men: Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord, O my soul!

Women: I will praise the Lord as long as I live and will sing praises to my God all my whole life long. Men: Do not put your trust in mortals, the powers of this world, for they are no help, when their breath departs, they return to the earth like everyone else and on that very day their plans perish. Women: Happy are those whose help and hope is in the Lord our God who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them and who keeps faith forever. Men: For it is the Lord our God who executes justice for the oppressed and gives food to the hungry. Women: The Lord sets the prisoners free and opens the eyes of the blind. The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down and loves the righteous. Men: The Lord watches over the strangers and upholds the orphan and the widow, but the way of the wicked the Lord will bring to ruin. All: The Lord will reign forever and our God for all generations. I will indeed praise the Lord with my whole life. ANTHEM The Summer Choir Almighty and Everlasting God Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625) Almighty and everlasting God, mercifully look upon our infirmities, and in all our dangers and necessities stretch forth thy right hand to help and defend us, through Christ our Lord. Amen. THE EARLY NEW ENGLAND CHURCH SERVICE Pat Mendelsohn SOLO Linnea Conley, mezzo soprano Religion Charles Ives (1874-1954) There is no unbelief. And day by day and night by night, unconsciously, the heart lives by faith the lips deny. God knows the why.

PILGRIMS AND INDIANS Barbara Norrgard *HYMN Amazing Grace New Century (black) Hymnal 547 THE TITHINGMAN Joe McBride *PSALM Psalm 148 New Century (black) Hymnal 721 THE ROLE OF THE PARSON Bobbie Hopkins DUET Mary Fike flute Dorothy Darlington, oboe Allegro for Flute and Oboe Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) THE ROLE OF THE DEACON Rick Woodman DUET Carol Woodman, soprano Thomas Woodman, bass The King of Love My Shepherd Is Harry Rowe Shelley (1858-1947) The King of love my shepherd is, whose goodness faileth never. I nothing lack if I am his, and he is mine forever. Where streams of living water flow, my ransomed soul he leadeth; and where the verdant pastures grow, with food celestial feedeth. Perverse and foolish, oft I strayed, but yet in love he sought me; and on his shoulder gently laid, and home, rejoicing, brought me. In death's dark vale I fear no ill, with thee, dear Lord, beside me; thy rod and staff my comfort still, thy cross before to guide me. Thou spreadst a table in my sight; thy unction grace bestoweth; and oh, the transport of delight with which my cup o er floweth.

And so through all the length of days, thy goodness faileth never; Good Shepherd, may I sing thy praise within thy house forever. Amen. Please join us as we continue our Founder s Day celebration with lobster rolls, hot dogs, and fun in the Memory Garden and on the front lawn (weather permitting) following the worship service. Notes about Today s Readings: The six readings in today s service were gathered from multiple sources, including largely, The Sabbath in Puritan New England by Alice Morse Earle; Frederick Buechner s The Clown in the Belfry, and the Church Committee Minutes of FCCOG. Musical Notes: All of the musical selections today are from various centuries that our congregation has lived through. All of the choral and vocal selections are by American composers, from each century, and particularly Charles Ives, who was a resident of Danbury, and Harry Shelley Rowe, who was born in New Haven. We have child care for babies and toddlers every Sunday in the Preschool classrooms. Your children are always welcome in child care for the entire worship service or for a respite time if needed. Please see an usher if you need directions to child care. The 10:00 am Service is broadcast live each week on WGCH 1490 AM Radio. In addition, the service is available through the church s website: www.fccog.org. A bulletin can be found there as well as a link to the live broadcast. Previous sermons may also be found there.
