We gather in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen Confession and Forgiveness In a world that promises to grant life from things that cannot give life, let us turn our hearts to the Triune God and humbly ask for forgiveness, eternal life and hope for the journey. God of mercy, you know our hearts. We look to things that are not life-giving to give us life. Lord, where do we go for eternal life? Where do we go to find hope and forgiveness? We repent and turn to you, for you are the light of the world. Forgive us, Lord, and set us free. Sisters and brothers, God s love is beyond measure. God s grace is for all creation. Hear these words: In the name of Jesus and because of God s great love, you are set free, forgiven and loved! Now shine with the light of the Trinity. Thanks be to God. 3
Hymn We Three Kings three kings of orient The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Prayer of the Day God of grace, We ask you to dispel all the darkness in our lives, and by the true light of Christ, illuminate our way to deep faith, fervent justice, and passionate love for all people. Anthem 10:30 Siyahamba South African Choristers Lesson Isaiah 9:2-7 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness on them light has shined. You have multiplied the nation, you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as people exult when dividing plunder. For the yoke of their burden, and the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian. For all the boots of the tramping warriors and all the garments rolled in blood shall be burned as fuel for the fire. For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peace for the throne of David and his kingdom. He will establish and uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time onward and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this. Children s Sermon Anthem 9:00 The Song of Peace Olaf C. Christiansen St. Andrew s Choir The heavens opened wide one night to let the angels through, Who sang for all, the Song of Peace that only heaven knew. Though centuries have measured time, with each unfolding year, The song still lives in human hearts to bring new hope, new cheer. We seek with bursting missiled power, to pierce the realm of blue, But love divine unfurled the skies to let a song come through. 10:30 Shepherd s Joy Mark Hayes New Dimension Singers; Jan Pappone, recorder; Steve Cassavant, guitar One quiet night when all was still, I saw a wondrous sight While tending sheep upon a hill One peaceful winter s night. For in the sky there shone a light so glorious and bright. Behold, an angel did appear upon that special night. Glory to God on high! Messiah has come! Love has transformed this night! The angel said, Now, have no fear, I bring good news to all. A Savior now is born to you; your God has heard your call; Then all the shepherds went to where the Baby could be found, They bowed in homage to the King, their faces on the ground. Glory to God on high! Messiah has come! Love has transformed this night. 5
Psalm 2:7-10 Read in unison I will tell of the decree of the Lord: He said to me, You are my son; today I have begotten you. Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession. You shall break them with a rod of iron, and dash them in pieces like a potter s vessel. Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. Anthem 10:30 See the Moon Traditional Folk Song K, 1, 2 Orff Ensemble Holy Gospel Mark 1:21-28 Glory to you, O Lord. They went to Capernaum; and when the sabbath came, Jesus entered the synagogue and taught. They were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. Just then there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit, and he cried out, What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God. But Jesus rebuked him, saying, Be silent, and come out of him! And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying with a loud voice, came out of him. They were all amazed, and they kept on asking one another, What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him. At once his fame began to spread throughout the surrounding region of Galilee. Praise to you, O Christ. Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. Continued on next page 6
He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.
