MUSIC IN WORSHIP Each Sunday we pray a Prayer for Illumination. This prayer calls on the Holy Spirit to empower the reading, understanding, proclaiming, and living of God s word. The prayer for illumination precedes the reading of scripture and preaching of the sermon and applies to all the readings and the proclamation of the Word. First introduced by the French theologian John Calvin (1509 1564), the prayer for illumination is an important and distinctive mark of the Reformed tradition. This morning s Psalm 85 (7 13) cites words spoken by a priest or prophet. Great words of promise paint a picture of a time coming that will be marked by steadfast love and faithfulness, justice and peace. The psalmist imagines justice and peace personified, so closely linked that they embrace (verse 10). Psalm 85 is a good reminder that when the Old Testament speaks of salvation, it is not ordinarily referring to life beyond death, but to a life in this world, lived in freedom and peace, basking in God s steadfast love and forgiveness, and enjoying the good gifts of the Lord.
