Landin Liturgical Worship, 8:15 a.m Blended Worship, 10:45 a.m. Sunday School 9:30 a.m. Happy Summer Greetings St. Andrew Lutherans! Communion, First Sunday of the month JULY 2017 As we enter the beginning of the month of July, the obvious focus in our nation is the celebration of the birth of our country on July 4. It is a fun and festive time of year as we gather together with friends and family around the pool and the grill while enjoying wonderful displays of fireworks, baseball games, and other festivities. It really is one of my favorite times of the year. I love my country and I am thankful, on a regular basis, for the blessing it is to have been born here and to be a citizen of the United States of America. I treasure the place where I grew up and that we are free to worship our amazing God without fear of persecution. I am confident that most, if not all, of you share the same feelings as I do. We love our country. We re thankful for the men and women who have given their lives to protect our freedoms that are given to us by God and protected by the Constitution. We enjoy singing those great patriotic hymns like God Bless America and My Country, Tis of Thee. However, it s times of the year like this, and other national holidays, when our love for and celebration of our country borders on worship and idolatry, which is a serious problem for us as disciples of Jesus Christ. As Christ s disciples, we must remember and always keep in mind that our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ (Phil. 3:20). When we gather together to worship as the body of Christ on Sunday mornings (or any other time that we gather for that purpose), we are there for one purpose, which is to worship Jesus Christ and to glorify his name above all others. We are there to praise the Lord of Heaven whose love for the world is so great that he allowed us to kill his only Son so that we wouldn t have to suffer the penalty for our own sins, which is death. Instead, we get to experience freedom from our sins and salvation from the death we owed him if we believe in Jesus Christ. Because of this, we won t be singing patriotic hymns in worship on 4th of July weekend or Memorial Day weekend or Labor Day weekend. When we sing in worship, we do it to point ourselves and others towards Jesus. It is another way that we are given to praise God and to celebrate what he has done for us. If we choose to sing something like My Country, Tis of Thee, where is our praise directed? Not to God, but to the United States of America. To sing this hymn in worship would be idolatry. There is nothing wrong with thanking God for our country and praying for it, but we will not be worshiping it at St. Andrew. Although we won t be singing those hymns in worship, I ll happily join in singing them in other venues as I always have in the past. I always want to keep in mind that I m a citizen of heaven first and a citizen of the world second. I am thankful for my country, but I am much more thankful that I am bought and paid for by the blood of Jesus Christ and will be with him in glory long after the United States becomes only but distant a memory. I pray that you will continue to make it your number one priority to praise God for what he has done for us and the world. Also, don t forget to thank him for the blessing that it is for us to live in the United States. Grace and Peace! Pastor Dan <><

JULY OUTREACH Renewal Resource Ministry is an evangelical Christ centered ministry focused on helping individuals and congregations to grow in the grace of Jesus Christ our Lord. This is done primarily through emails. To receive these spiritual devotional thoughts, articles, and booklets you must send your request to RevDrDonEdwards@Gmail.Com. Then you are placed on the Renewal Resource Ministry email list. With spiritual insights, renewal thoughts, and my written Bible materials given away for free individuals grow in Jesus Christ. Several times during the year a request for individual support is shared. It is when congregations share from their abundance to this ministry wonderful things happen. Such as preaching/teaching seminars, evangelical materials for the churches, and new lessons written, printed, and in some cases mailed. It is my prayer that this ministry will continue as an extension of my ministry, and as I am called to preach and teach in churches this will be a Renewal Resource Ministry for us all. Soli Deo Gloria! BACK TO SCHOOL COLLECTION For the month of July, we will once again be collecting backpacks, school supplies, peanut better and cereal. The Son Light House will distribute them to the needy school children in our area. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Kathy Heilman at 570-546-2126, email: kiheilman@comcast.net or Jonnie Stahl at 570-546-5761. Your generosity will be greatly appreciated! Dear Friends of St. Andrew, Thank you so much for the beautiful altar flowers, prayers and cards received from my recent hip surgery in May. Also many thanks to Pastor Dan for doing a healing service and for all in attendance. Thanks again! God s blessings to all! Janet Thank you to the Women of St. Andrew and to all who donated time, money and/or food to Tricia s memorial service and luncheon. She will be sadly missed by us all. Dear St. Andrew Parish, 6/1/2017 Thank you for responding to our recent issue of World Ark by making such a generous gift of $455.48 to support Heifer International projects around the world. I s so glad you were inspired to do even more! Your donation bought: Tree seedlings, Bees, Chicks, a goat, ducks/geese, sheep and rabbits and has helped transform entire communities as each participating family fulfills their promise to donate their livestock s offspring to another family in need. At Heifer we believe that every person deserves dignity, opportunity and a future free from hunger. Thank you for sharing this strong belief and putting your passion into action to create lasting change. Sincerely, Pierre U. Ferrari President and CEO
