TRADITIONAL BURIAL OR CREMATION BURIAL? We ve decided to be cremated. So says a couple I have known for many years. The husband didn t come right out and say it, but it gave an indication that he wanted my input. He said he knew that the Catholic Church allows cremation although it hadn t in the past. A 2015 report by the Cremation Association of North America (CANA) shows that the cremation rate in the U.S. has almost doubled in the past 15 years. We all hear and see cremation advertising which communicates the increase use of cremation. What are the reasons people are choosing cremation? Three main reasons are that it cost less, is seen as more environmentally friendly and is simpler. My friend is correct that the Catholic Church did not always allow cremation. The 1917 Catholic Church s Code of Canon Law prohibited it except in rare situations. Christians have always revered the body of the deceased because God in the Person of Jesus Christ took on human flesh. Further Jesus bodily resurrection is the hope of all Christians. Historically cremation was associated with pagans who did not hold to the Christian belief in the bodily resurrection of the dead. In the early 1960 s the church began to allow cremation. The 1983 Code of Canon Law says: The Church earnestly recommends the pious custom of burying the bodies of the dead be observed, it does not however, forbid cremation unless it has been chosen for reasons which are contrary to Christian teaching"(canon 1176). The Church now allows for cremation of the body, providing that family members making that decision are not doing so because they fear the body is lost forever and has no future together in Christ with the immortal soul (http:// www.ccaw.org/about_cremation.html). While the Catholic Church allows cremation it directs that the remains be treated with similar respects as the deceased body. The Appendix to the Order of Christian Funerals notes: The cremated remains of a body should be treated with the same respect given to the human body from which they come. This includes the use of a worthy vessel to contain the ashes, the manner in which they are carried, the care and attention to appropriate placement and transport, and the final disposition. The cremated remains should be buried in a grave or entombed in a mausoleum or columbarium. Continued in the column to the right > > > > > > > > > > > > CALENDAR FOR ASCENSION AND ST. Additionally, there will be no 8am Mass on Monday October 31st (it will be at 7pm for the All Saints Holy Day of Obligation Mass at St. Bernard) & November 2nd (due to the 6:45pm All Souls Mass at Ascension). < < < < < < < < < <Continued from the column on the left. The practice of scattering cremated remains on the sea, from the air, or on the ground, or keeping cremated remains in the home of a relative or friend of the deceased are not the reverent disposition that the Church requires. Whenever possible, appropriate means for recording with dignity the memory of the deceased should be adopted, such as a plaque or stone which records the name of the deceased. November is the month of remembering and praying for our departed brother & sisters. May they rest in peace. Fr. Gregory
