THE OLIN T. BINKLEY MEMORIAL BAPTIST CHURCH OCTOBER 14, 2018 THE TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST The Spirit is still seeking to recruit us to be a part of the beloved community of racial justice and equality. Some persons and family communities have answered the call The Spirit seeks to recruit us in to the Beloved Community, where our standing as equals is conferred by grace alone. We stand between two gospels about race the gospel of racial exceptionalism and the gospel of human race equality of being. ~James Forbes, Whose Gospel? A Concise Guide to Progressive Protestantism

CELEBRATING OUR FAITH RINGING OF THE SANCTUS BELL CHORAL CALL TO WORSHIP Praise God s Holy Name Keith Hampton Sing till the power of the Lord come down. Shout Hallelujah! Praise God's Holy name! Amazing grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me; I once was lost, but now I'm found, was blind, but now I see. Jesus how I love Thee! Shout Hallelujah! Praise God's Holy name! Must Jesus bear the cross alone and all the world go free? No, there's a cross for everyone and there's a cross for me. * INVOCATION AS CALL TO WORSHIP (inspired by Hebrews 1:1-4) We praise you, O God, for breaking through to us in the person of Jesus. When the words of the prophets went unheard and when their actions were ignored, you spoke the creative word once more. Bringing order out of chaos again this time not to bring a world into being, but to bring your very being into the world. The essence of your love taking on our flesh. One: In the midst of this congregation, we praise you. Many: With our lives, we worship you. One: Gracious God, Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer, Many: to you be all glory and honor, now and forever. Amen written by Moira Laidlaw * PROCESSIONAL HYMN God Has Spoken by the Prophets see insert * PASSING THE PEACE OF CHRIST One: The Peace of Christ be with you. Many: And also with you. Stephanie Ford OPPORTUNITIES FOR SERVICE, GROWTH, AND FELLOWSHIP Complete the requested information and then pass it back down the row. Thank you for worshipping with us at Binkley! THE HEBREW LESSON Jeremiah 18:1-11 MINISTRY THROUGH THE DECADES Tonya Hamm & Tim Ross ANTHEM He Never Failed Me Yet Robert Ray I will sing of God's mercy, every day, every hour, God gives me power. I will sing and give thanks to thee, for all the dangers, toils and snares that God has brought me out. God is my strength, and I'll serve God, no matter what the test. Trust and never doubt, Jesus will surely bring you out, He never failed me yet. I know that God is able to deliver in time of storm. I know that God will keep you safe from all earthly harm. One day when my weary soul is at rest, I'm going home to be forever blessed. Didn't my God deliver Moses from King Pharaoh? And didn't God cool the fiery furnace for Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego? When I think of what my God can do, God delivered Daniel, I know God will deliver you.

BUILDING OUR FUTURE PRESENTATION OF ELLIS DEAN KIMPLE (born April 11, 2018) Adam, Kelly, Leland & Ellis Dean Kimple Pastor: Congregation, what promises do you make to this family? LUNCH AND CONVERSATION: Sponsored by the Reference Team: Sunday, October 21, Postworship: The Reference Team invites you to a time of discernment and further sharing about our proposed Congregational Behavioral Covenant. Undergirding all we do is how we show respect and care for each other in one-on-one conversations, small gatherings and congregational meetings and events. Having received your ideas at the Lunch and Learn on June 10, the Reference Team has incorporated these ideas into a draft Behavioral Covenant for your consideration. We invite your attendance on Sunday, October 21 st following church when we will enjoy lunch together and consider this covenant and your response. We hope you will join us for this important time in the life of our church. Please let the church office know if you would like childcare. Thank you. The Binkley Church Reference Team POTLUCK GROUPS: STILL TIME TO JOIN! Last year we had the idea of putting together groups for people interested in getting together for potlucks over a six-month period. One group had ice cream one time, made music together another time, and had several potlucks too. Another group got together monthly for the six months and has decided to stay together for another four months. Other groups met less frequently, but still had a chance to get to know each other better. The six months are up and it is time to sign up for groups again. All are welcome. Children are adored. People will be assigned to a group with the goal of mixing people together who may not know each other well. The potluck groups are meant to provide an opportunity for people to meet for fun and fellowship, forming new bonds and deepening others. If you have questions, please call Gretchen Aylsworth (919-942-7817) or Sibyl Wagner (919-967- 9733). Sign up to volunteer for the Patch in the Narthex, or stay after lunch today to help us unload the delivery truck! Invite your neighbors and friends. The more the merrier! It s like being at a village fair with loving church friends making it so. Healthy snacks provided, too!
