Pentecost XXI Sunday 14 October 2018 10:30 AM Welcome to Saint James. Saint James seeks to be a contemplative church in an anxious world. Our services aspire to have a contemplative feel as we weave the three essential elements of contemplative prayer into each mass: silence, stillness, and simplicity. This does not mean an absence of noise or movement but an invitation to explore the interior silence of your own being, resting in the One who loves and redeems you. During silent pauses consider being attentive in this way: Silently, interiorly say a single word. We recommend the prayer phrase, Maranatha, meaning Come, Lord Jesus. Recite it as four syllables of equal length. Listen to it as you say it, gently but continuously. If thoughts or distractions come, simply return to saying the word. If you are visiting, feel free to fill out a Get Connected card and place it in the offering plate. Or visit us online and complete the form at saintjameslancaster.org/get-connected. The flowers at the Altar are given to the glory of God and in loving memory of Dennis M. Remley; Ruth K. & J. Frank Remley; Zenta & Julius Laiva. Prelude Prelude in D Major J.K.F. Fischer (ca.1665 - ca.1738)

Processional Hymn Hymnal 388 O worship the King, all glorious above! O gratefully sing his power and his love! Our shield and defender, the Ancient of Days, pavilioned in splendor, and girded with praise. O tell of his might! O sing of his grace! Whose robe is the light, whose canopy space. His chariots of wrath the deep thunderclouds form, and dark is his path on the wings of the storm. The earth, with its store of wonders untold, Almighty, thy power hath founded of old, hath stablished it fast by a changeless decree, and round it hath cast, like a mantle, the sea. Thy bountiful care, what tongue can recite? It breathes in the air; it shines in the light; it streams from the hills, it descends to the plain, and sweetly distills in the dew and the rain. Frail children of dust, and feeble as frail, in thee do we trust, nor find thee to fail; thy mercies, how tender! how firm to the end! Our Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend! The Opening Acclamation Celebrant People Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And blessed be God s kingdom, now and for ever. Amen.

The Collect for Purity Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Confession and Forgiveness For us to be ministers of reconciliation, we must first be reconciled. Let us admit to ourselves and to God our trespasses against others. Silence may be kept. Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. God, who is both power and love, forgive you and free you from your sins, heal and strengthen you by his Spirit, and raise you to new life in Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Gloria Hymnal S-280

The Collect of the Day The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Lord, we pray that your grace may always precede and follow us, that we may continually be given to good works; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Children s Chapel Invitation

Liturgy of the Word Amos 5:6-7,10-15 A reading from the Book of Amos. Seek the Lord and live, or he will break out against the house of Joseph like fire, and it will devour Bethel, with no one to quench it. Ah, you that turn justice to wormwood, and bring righteousness to the ground! They hate the one who reproves in the gate, and they abhor the one who speaks the truth. Therefore, because you trample on the poor and take from them levies of grain, you have built houses of hewn stone, but you shall not live in them; you have planted pleasant vineyards, but you shall not drink their wine. For I know how many are your transgressions, and how great are your sins you who afflict the righteous, who take a bribe, and push aside the needy in the gate. Therefore the prudent will keep silent in such a time; for it is an evil time. Seek good and not evil, that you may live; and so the Lord, the God of hosts, will be with you, just as you have said. Hate evil and love good, and establish justice in the gate; it may be that the Lord, the God of hosts, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph. Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s people. Thanks be to God.

Psalm 90:12-17 (sung by choir and congregation) 12 So teach us to number our days * that we may apply our hearts to wisdom. 13 Return O Lord how long will you tarry? * be gracious to your servants. 14 Satisfy us by your loving-kindness in the morning; * so shall we rejoice and be glad all the days of our life. 15 Make us glad by the measure of the days that you afflicted us * and the years in which we suffered adversity. 16 Show your servants your works * and your splendor to their children. 17 May the graciousness of the Lord our God be upon us; * prosper the work of our hands, prosper our handiwork.

Hebrews 4:12-16 A reading from the Letter to the Hebrews. The word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing until it divides soul from spirit, joints from marrow; it is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And before him no creature is hidden, but all are naked and laid bare to the eyes of the one to whom we must render an account. Since, then, we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s people. Thanks be to God.

Gospel Acclamation Steven R. Janco Before Gospel: Alleluia & vs. 1 After Gospel: Alleluia Repeat Alleluia

Mark 10:17-31 The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory to you, Lord Christ. As Jesus was setting out on a journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him, Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life? Jesus said to him, Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: You shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; You shall not defraud; Honor your father and mother. He said to him, Teacher, I have kept all these since my youth. Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me. When he heard this, he was shocked and went away grieving, for he had many possessions. Then Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, How hard it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God! And the disciples were perplexed at these words. But Jesus said to them again, Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God. They were greatly astounded and said to one another, Then who can be saved? Jesus looked at them and said, For mortals it is impossible, but not for God; for God all things are possible.

Peter began to say to him, Look, we have left everything and followed you. Jesus said, Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields, for my sake and for the sake of the good news, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this age houses, brothers and sisters, mothers and children, and fields with persecutions and in the age to come eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first. The Gospel of the Lord: Praise to you, Lord Christ. The Sermon

As we say the Creed together, we focus on the Oneness of God who is the Creator of all that is seen and unseen. The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayers of the People The Peace All stand. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. Offertory Anthem Turn Thee Again Thomas Attwood (1765-1838) Turn Thee again, O Lord at the last, And be gracious unto Thy servants. Amen The Great Thanksgiving Prayer A

The Celebrant proceeds in giving thanks to God for creation before the people to sing: Sanctus Hymnal S-127 The Celebrant continues until: Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. The Celebrant continues until: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Fraction & Invitation A time of silence is kept. Celebrant Jesus is the lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. People Blessed are those who are called to the supper of the Lamb. All Christians are welcome to receive Holy Eucharist with bread and wine or by bread alone. Gluten-free wafers are available. If you prefer not to receive, we invite you to come forward for a blessing.

Agnus Dei Hymnal S-161 Communion Motet Break Thou the Bread of Life William F. Sherwin (1826-1888) Break Thou the bread of life, Dear Lord, to me, As Thou didst break the loaves beside the sea; Beyond the sacred page I seek Thee, Lord; My spirit pants for Thee, O living Word. Bless Thou the truth, dear Lord, to me, to me, As Thou didst bless the bread by Galilee; Then shall all bondage cease, All fetters fall; And I shall find my peace, My all in all.

Communion Hymn Hymnal 684 1. O for a closer walk with God, a calm and heavenly frame, a light to shine upon the road that leads me to the Lamb! 2. Where is the blessedness I knew when first I saw the Lord? Where is the soul-refreshing view of Jesus and his word? 3. Return, O holy Dove, return, sweet messenger of rest; I hate the sins that made thee mourn, and drove thee from my breast. 4. The dearest idol I have known, whate er that idol be, help me to tear it from thy throne, and worship only thee. 5. So shall my walk be close with God, calm and serene my frame; so purer light shall mark the road that leads me to the Lamb. Post Communion Prayer You have opened to us the Scriptures, O Christ, and you have made yourself known in the breaking of the bread. Abide with us, we pray, that, blessed by your royal presence, we may walk with you all the days of our life, and at its end behold you in the glory of the eternal Trinity, one God for ever and ever. Amen. Commissioning of Eucharistic Visitors Celebrant People In the name of this congregation, I send you forth bearing these holy gifts, that those to whom you go may share with us in the communion of Christ s body and blood. We who are many are one body because we all share one bread and one cup.

The Blessing & Dismissal The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ, and the blessing of God almighty, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, be with you and remain with you always. Amen. Let us bless the Lord. Thanks be to God. Recessional Hymn Hymnal 655 1. O Jesus, I have promised to serve thee to the end: be thou for ever near me, my Master and my friend; I shall not fear the battle, if thou art by my side, nor wander from the pathway, if thou wilt be my guide. 2. O let me hear thee speaking in accents clear and still, above the storms of passion, the murmurs of self-will; O speak to reassure me, to hasten or control; O speak, and make me listen, thou guardian of my soul. 3. O Jesus, thou hast promised to all who follow thee, that where thou art in glory there shall thy servant be; and, Jesus, I have promised to serve thee to the end; O give me grace to follow, my Master and my friend.
