MOLEBEN TO THE MOST HOLY THEOTOKOS AND EVER-VIRGIN MARY The celebrant vests in the epitrachil and incenses the church preceded by the deacon bearing a candle. The royal doors remain closed. After the censing the deacon stays inside the sanctuary and the priest goes before the closed royal doors. [ Deacon: Reverend Father, give the blessing. ] Priest: Blessed is our God, always, now and ever and forever. Response: Amen. Outside of Pascha Glory to you, our God, glory to you. Heavenly King, Comforter, Spirit of Truth, everywhere present and filling all things, Treasury of Blessings and Giver of Life, come and dwell within us, cleanse us of all stain, and save our souls, O gracious One. During Pascha Christ is risen from the dead! By death he trampled Death; and to those in the tombs he granted life. (Three times) Holy God, Holy and Mighty, Holy and Immortal, have mercy on us. (Three times) Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and forever. Amen. Most Holy Trinity, have mercy on us; Lord, cleanse us of our sins; Master, forgive our transgressions; Holy One, come to us and heal our infirmities for your name's sake. Lord, have mercy. (Three times) 3

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and forever. Amen. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Priest: For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, now and ever and forever. Response: Amen. Lord, have mercy. (Twelve times) Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and forever. Amen. Come, + let us worship our King and God. Come, + let us worship Christ, our King and God. Come, + let us worship and bow before the only Lord Jesus Christ, the King and our God. The celebrant enters the sanctuary by the southern door and vests in the phelon. Then he stands in front of the holy table. TROPARION and THEOTOKION Tone 4 4

Cantor: Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and forever. Amen. 5

The royal doors are opened. 6

GOSPEL Deacon: Let us be attentive! Priest: Peace be to all! Deacon: Wisdom! Be attentive! Prokeimenon (Psalm 44:18,11) - Tone 4 Verse: Listen, O daughter, and see and incline your ear. (Repeat as above). I shall make your name remembered in all generations The deacon incenses in preparation of the Holy Gospel. Deacon: Let us pray to the Lord. Response: Lord, have mercy. Priest: For holy are You, our God, and You abide in the holy places, and we give glory to You, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and forever. Response: Amen. 7

Deacon: Let everything that lives and that breathes give praise to the Lord. Deacon: O, that we be deigned worthy of hearing the Holy Gospel, in peace let us pray to the Lord. Priest: Peace be to all! 8

Priest: Wisdom! Let us stand and listen to a reading of the holy gospel according to St. Luke. (Matins Gospel for March 25) Deacon: Let us be attentive! The priest reads the Gospel even if a deacon is present. In those days, Mary set out, proceeding in haste into the hill country to a town of Judah, where she entered Zechariah s house and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary s greeting, the baby leapt in her womb. Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and cried out in a loud voice: Blessed are you among women and blest is the fruit of your womb. But who am I that the mother of my Lord should come to me? The moment your greeting sounded in my ears, the baby leapt in my womb for joy. Blest is she who trusted that the Lord s words to her would be fulfilled. Then Mary said: My being proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit finds joy in God my Savior, for He has looked upon His servant in her lowliness; all ages to come shall call me blessed. God Who is mighty has done great things for me, holy is His name; His mercy is from age to age on those who fear Him. He has shown might with His arm; He has confused the proud in their inmost thoughts. He has deposed the mighty from their thrones and raised the lowly to high places. The hungry He has given every good thing, while the rich He has sent empty away. He has upheld Israel His servant, ever mindful of His mercy; even as He promised our fathers, promised Abraham and his descendants forever. Mary remained with Elizabeth about three months and then returned home. 9

A homily may be given at this time. After this the celebrant and deacon return to the holy table. SUPPLICATION TO THE BLESSED THEOTOKOS Priest: Rejoice, most blessed Virgin Mary, ever-merciful Mother of God; and save all who have recourse to you. 2. Rejoice, O Mother of Christ our God, and save all who have recourse to you. Alternate melodies after each petition. 3. Rejoice, O Mother of eternal love and save all who have recourse to you. 4. Rejoice, O Mother of God s grace, and save all who have recourse to you. 10

5. Rejoice, Virgin immaculately conceived, and save all who have recourse to you. 6. Rejoice, Virgin more radiant than the Cherubim, and save all who have recourse to you. 7. Rejoice, Virgin more glorious than the Seraphim, and save all who have recourse to you. 8. Rejoice, O Mary, untainted dove, and save all who have recourse to you. 9. Rejoice, O Mary, fragrant flower of immortality, and save all who have recourse to you. 10. Rejoice, O Mary, benevolent sustainer of virgins, and save all who have recourse to you. 11. Rejoice, O Mary, canopy more boundless than the heavens, and save all who have recourse to you. 12. Rejoice, O Mary, intercessor before the impartial Judge, and save all who have recourse to you. 13. Rejoice, O Mary, comfort of the sorrowful, and save all who have recourse to you. 14. Rejoice, O Mary, refuge of sinners, and save all who have recourse to you. 15. Rejoice, O Mary, mediatrix who did not abandon us after your dormition, and save all who have recourse to you. 16. Rejoice, O Mary, unparalleled in purity and blessedness, and save all who have recourse to you. 11

The celebrant and deacon go before the icon of the Theotokos on the iconostas. If there is no iconostas then before the icon of the Theotokos on the tetrapod. Priest: [Bending our knees] in all humility, let us pray to the Lord God in peace. Priest: O our ever-gracious Queen, our hope, O Mother of God, Comfort of Orphans, the Harbor of the Harborless, the Joy of the Suffering, the Refuge of the Despised, behold our trial, behold our tribulation and help us since we are without shelter. Beholding our destitution, loosen our bonds, if you will; for we have no help but you, no other refuge, no kindly comfort but you, O Mother of God. You will guard and protect us forever and ever. Response: Amen. The celebrant stands before the holy table and the deacon goes before the royal doors. 16

LITANY Deacon: Have mercy on us, O God, according to Your great mercy; we pray You, hear us and have mercy. Again, we pray You, O Lord our God, to deliver Your servants from all affliction, wrath, and need, and from all corporal pain, and that their sins, committed both deliberately and through human frailty, be forgiven. Let us all say: Hear us and have mercy. Let us pray to the Lord our God that He hear the supplicating voice of us sinners and have mercy upon His servants, all Christians of the true faith coming to this holy temple. Spare us, O Lord, loathing the multitude of our sins; and since You are of great mercy, reveal Your 17

innumerable bounties to Your servants, and avert Your righteous anger from surging against us. Quickly hear us and graciously have mercy. Priest: Hear us, O God our Savior, Hope of all bounds of the earth and of those far away at sea, and graciously be merciful to us in our sinfulness and forgive us; for You are a merciful God and You love us all, and we give praise to You, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, now and ever and forever. Response: Amen. Special petitions may be inserted here. 18

DISMISSAL Deacon: Wisdom! Outside of Pascha: Response: More honorable than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the seraphim, who, a virgin, gave birth to God the Word; you, truly the Theotokos, we magnify. Priest: Glory to you, O Christ, our God, our hope; glory to you! Response: Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and forever. Amen. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Give the blessing! During Pascha: Response: Shine in splendor, O new Jerusalem for the glory of the Lord is risen upon you. O Sion, now dance and be glad. And you, pure Theotokos, rejoice in the resurrection of your Son. Priest: Glory to you, O Christ, our God, our hope; glory to you! Response: Christ is risen from the dead! By death He trampled Death; and to those in the tombs He granted life. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Give the blessing! Priest: May Christ our true God, [if it is Sunday, risen from the dead], have mercy on us and save us through the prayers of his most pure Mother, and of the holy (Name/s), patron[s] [patroness] of this church; and of the holy (Name/s of saint/s whose day it is); and through the prayers of all the saints; for Christ is good and loves us all. Response: Amen. 19
