FLOWERS The flowers in the sanctuary are given to the glory of God and in memory of Chloe and Ernie Meggs by Libby and Rich Carpenter; Shelley Carpenter; and Susan, Matt, Sidney, and Charles Swenson. ABOUT OUR BANNERS In the Bible and in church tradition, the dove and fire symbolize the Holy Spirit. According to the four Gospels, the Spirit descended on Jesus like a dove at his baptism (Mark 1:10 and parallels). John the Baptist promised the Messiah would baptize with the Holy Spirit and with fire (Matthew 3:11; Luke 3:16). From Moses encounter with God by the burning bush (Exodus 3:1-6) to the tongues of fire at Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4), fire is a sign of God s riveting, transforming presence. The Pentecost banner depicts the fire of God s challenge and the dove of God s gentle loving care. The artist who designed and painted the Pentecost banner is our own Bambi Setzer. 5

AUGUST 12 AND 19, SPIRITUALITY AND THE BODY IN ANCIENT CORINTH An Adult Sunday School Elective series, 9:45-10:45 am, in the Chapel, Bldg. A, led by Diane Lipsett. We ll continue our summer study of 1 Corinthians and its explorations of embodied spirituality including interactions between Paul and this ancient congregation about food, gender, death and other bodyspirit matters. If you haven t yet found an adult Sunday School class, or your class is taking a summer break, or your whole class wants to give your teacher(s) a break, this study may be for you.
