THE FIFTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST SEPTEMBER 2, 2018 TODAY'S WORSHIP Divine Service III LSB pages 184-202 L = Liturgist * = Stand C = Congregation PRELUDE WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS *OPENING HYMN O Day of Rest and Gladness LSB 906 1. O day of rest and gladness, O day of joy and light, O balm of care and sadness, Most beautiful, most bright; This day the high and lowly, Through ages joined to bless, Sing, Holy, holy, holy, The triune God confess. 2. This day at earth s creation The light first had its birth; This day for our salvation Christ rose from depths of earth; This day our Lord victorious The Spirit sent from heav n, And thus this day most glorious A three-fold light was giv n. 3. This day, God s people meeting, His Holy Scripture hear; His living presence greeting, Through bread and wine made near. We journey on, believing, Renewed with heav nly might, From grace more grace receiving, On this blest day of light. 4. That light our hope sustaining, We walk the pilgrim way, At length our rest attaining, Our endless Sabbath day. We sing to Thee our praises, O Father, Spirit, Son; The Church her voice upraises To Thee, blest Three in One. INVOCATION AND GENERAL CONFESSION L: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. L: Gracious Heavenly Father, we are humbly sorry for our sins which are too many even to recall. C: Our good intentions, O Lord, so often fall short. L: We have wasted time and failed to discipline ourselves. C: We have complained when we should have made melodies in our hearts to Your honor and glory. L: We often have permitted circumstances to make us bitter and angry toward others. C: We confess that, in spite of Your assurance of constant care, we often get discouraged in life. L: Create in us truly repentant hearts. C: Give us the faith to trust in Your complete forgiveness through Christ s suffering and death. L: Renew our lives to serve with zeal and dedication. C: Receive our confession, merciful Father, and pardon our transgression. L: Be gracious unto us. C: Forgive us and cleanse us, for the sake of Your Son, our Savior. Amen. *THE ABSOLUTION *THE GLORIA PATRI Taken from LSB, page 186 Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

*THE KYRIE Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. *THE COLLECT OF THE DAY L: The Lord be with you. C: And with thy spirit. L: Let us pray. THE OLD TESTAMENT READING for the 15th Sunday after Pentecost is from Deuteronomy 4:1, 6-9, page 148: 1 "And now, O Israel, listen to the statutes and the rules that I am teaching you, and do them, that you may live, and go in and take possession of the land that the LORD, the God of your fathers, is giving you. 6 Keep them and do them, for that will be your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, who, when they hear all these statutes, will say, 'Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.' 7 For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as the LORD our God is to us, whenever we call upon him? 8 And what great nation is there, that has statutes and rules so righteous as all this law that I set before you today? 9 "Only take care, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make them known to your children and your children s children L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. THE EPISTLE is from Ephesians 6:10-20, page 979: 10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, 19 and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak. L: This is the Word of the Lord. *ALLELUIA AND VERSE C: Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia. *THE HOLY GOSPEL - The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the seventh chapter, verses 14-23, page 843: C: Glory be to Thee, O Lord. 14 And he called the people to him again and said to them, "Hear me, all of you, and understand: 15 There is nothing outside a person that by going into him can defile him, but the things that come out of a person are what defile him." 17 And when he had entered the house and left the people, his disciples asked him about the parable. 18 And he said to them, "Then are you also without understanding? Do you not see that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him, 19 since it enters not his heart but his stomach, and is expelled?" ( Thus he declared all foods clean.) 20 And he said, "What comes out of a person is what defiles him. 21 For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, 22 coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. 23 All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person." L: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise be to Thee, O Christ. *THE NICENE CREED I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father,

by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. HYMN OF THE DAY With the Lord Begin Your Task LSB 869 1. With the Lord begin your task, Jesus will direct it. For His aid and counsel ask; Jesus will perfect it. Ev ry morn with Jesus rise, And when day is ended, In His name then close your eyes; Be to Him commended. 2. Let each day begin with prayer, Praise, and adoration; On the Lord cast ev ry care, He is your salvation. Morning, evening, and at night Jesus will be near you, Save thee from the tempter s might, With His presence cheer you. 3. With your Savior at your side, Foes need not alarm you; In His promises confide, And no ill can harm you. All your trust and hope repose In the mighty Master, Who in wisdom truly knows How to stem disaster. 4. If your task be thus begun With the Savior s blessing, Safely then your course will run, Toward the promise pressing. Good will follow ev rywhere While you here must wander; You, at last the joy will share In the mansions yonder. THE SERMON Armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-12) THE OFFERING - During the offering all worshipers are asked to fill out the blue or ivory cards found in the pew rack. Please pass cards down to center aisle. They will be collected immediately after the offering. VOLUNTARY *THE OFFERTORY LSB page 192 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from Thy presence, and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation, and uphold me with Thy free spirit. Amen. *PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH *LORD'S PRAYER (Found on the inside back cover of the hymnal.) *THE WORDS OF INSTITUTION L: The peace of the Lord be with you always. *THE AGNUS DEI LSB page 198 O Christ, Thou Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us. O Christ, Thou Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us. O Christ, Thou Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world, grant us Thy peace. Amen.
