January 15, 2017 Meditation And his mother and his brothers came, and standing outside they sent to him and called him. And a crowd was sitting around him, and they said to him, Your mother and your brothers are outside, seeking you. And he answered them, Who are my mother and my brothers? And looking about at those who sat around him, he said, Here are my mother and my brothers! For whoever does the will of God, he is my brother and sister and mother. - Mark 3:31-35 As we recognize, accept, and embrace our new family, we experience the walls of hostility abolished, torn down, no more. Only in the family of God can people so distinctly different be the same (equal in creation and redemption) and counted as sisters and brothers in a new family. - Trillia Newbell, Meet the Family of God on DesiringGod.org Readings to help you prepare to worship, as Jesus said, in spirit and in truth. When you hear the first song begin, please come take a seat.

Song of Praise Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee. Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty, God in Three Persons, blessed Trinity. Holy, holy, holy, all the saints adore Thee, Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee, Who wert and art and evermore shalt be. Holy, holy, holy, holy - holy Lord most high! Holy, holy, holy, holy - holy Lord most high! Holy, holy, holy, though the darkness hide Thee, Though the eye of sinful man, Thy glory may not see. Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee, Perfect in pow r, in love, and purity. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, All thy works shall praise Thy name in earth, and sky, and sea. Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty, God in Three Persons, blessed Trinity. Holy, Holy, Holy Words: Reginald Heber Music: John B. Dykes Public domain Confession of Sin Lord God, life is found in You alone, so please hear us as we confess together: We have been mesmerized by the wealth and glory of this world. We have compromised our allegiance to You, and have not trusted You as our refuge. We have often withdrawn from those in need, and cheered the downfall of those we envy. We have not been wise stewards of gifts for Your kingdom and the common good. Father in Heaven, forgive us! Rescue us from the pleasures and the pitfalls of sin. Lord Jesus Christ, redeem us! Help us abide in You by faith. Holy Spirit, renew us! Bear Your fruit in our lives and be our constant comfort. Amen. A time to be honest with God about our need for forgiveness. Please read together Silent Confession Assurance of Pardon This is how God showed His love among us: He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him. 1 John 4:9 3

Blessed Assurance Words: Fanny Crosby, 1873 Music: Phoebe P. Knapp Public domain Psalm 139:23-24 Song of Renewal Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine! Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine! Heir of salvation, purchase of God, Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood. This is my story, this is my song: Praising my Savior all the day long. This is my story, this is my song: Praising my Savior all the day long. Perfect submission, perfect delight, Visions of rapture now burst on my sight. Angels descending bring from above, Echoes of mercy, whispers of love. Perfect submission, all is at rest, I in my Savior am happy and blest; Watching and waiting, looking above, Filled with His goodness, lost in His love. Being reconciled with God through Christ enables us to seek peace with each other and participate in His work. Scripture Reading If anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more: circumcised on the Philippians 3:4b-11 eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless. But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead. Leader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God! Song of Preparation Draw me close to You, never let me go. I lay it all down again, to hear You say that I m Your friend. Lord, You re my desire; no one else will do. Cause nothing else can take Your place, to feel the warmth of Your embrace. Help me find the way, bring me back to You. Oh, oh... You re all I want. You re all I ve ever needed. You re all I want help me know You are near! Oh, oh... You re all I want. You re all I ve ever needed. You re all I want help me know You are near! Help me know You are near! Draw Me Close Words and music: Kelly Carpenter 1994 Mercy / Vineyard Publishing Draw me nearer, nearer blessed Lord, to the cross where Thou hast died; Draw me nearer, nearer blessed Lord, to Thy precious, bleeding side. Consecrate me now to Thy service, Lord, by the pow r of grace divine; Let my soul look up with a steadfast hope, and my will be lost in Thine. Draw Me Nearer Words and music: Fanny Crosby Public domain 5

Our mind, body, and spirit are nourished with food that does not perish. Mark 10:17-34 Isaiah 40:8 Today s sermon is given by Assistant Pastor Joel Passmore. God feeds us with His Word Sermon Text 17 And as he was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and knelt before him and asked him, Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life? 18 And Jesus said to him, Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. 19 You know the commandments: Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother. 20 And he said to him, Teacher, all these I have kept from my youth. 21 And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me. 22 Disheartened by the saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions. 23 And Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, How difficult it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God! 24 And the disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said to them again, Children, how difficult it is to enter the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God. 26 And they were exceedingly astonished, and said to him, Then who can be saved? 27 Jesus looked at them and said, With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God. 28 Peter began to say to him, See, we have left everything and followed you. 29 Jesus said, Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel, 30 who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life. 31 But many who are first will be last, and the last first. 32 And they were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them. And they were amazed, and those who followed were afraid. And taking the twelve again, he began to tell them what was to happen to him, 33 saying, See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death and deliver him over to the Gentiles. 34 And they will mock him and spit on him, and flog him and kill him. And after three days he will rise. Leader: The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever. People: Praise be to God! Sermon We encourage you to use this space to take notes or write questions. 6

Invitation to the Lord s Supper Parents who would like for their nursery-aged children to be prayed for during communion should pick them up at this time. Words of Institution The Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord s death until he comes. Leader: Therefore, we proclaim the mystery of our faith: People: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. 1 Corinthians 11:23b-26 The Lord s Supper Gluten-free, nut-free wafers are located in the wooden boxes. If you would like, a communion distributor will pray for your children. At the back of the fellowship hall is someone ready to pray with and for you. As others take communion please feel free to pray, sing along, or talk quietly with your neighbor. Song of Communion By His stripes we are healed, by His nail-pierced hands we re free, By His blood we re washed clean, now we have the victory. The power of sin is broken, Jesus overcame it all. He has won our freedom, Jesus has won it all. The Anthem (You Have Won the Victory) Words and music: Joth Hunt, Henry Seeley, Liz Webber 2008 Planet Shakers Ministries International Inc. Hallelujah! You have won the victory. Hallelujah! You have won it all for me. Death could not hold You down. You are the risen King! Seated in majesty, You are the risen King! Our God is risen, He is alive! He won the victory, He reigns on high! 7

We go out with renewed faith to love our God and our neighbors. Leaning On The Everlasting Arms Words: Elisha A. Hoffman Music: Anthony J. Showalter Public domain Deuteronomy 33:27 God sends us out refreshed Song of Rejoicing What a fellowship, what a joy divine, What a blessedness, what a peace is mine, Leaning, leaning, safe and secure from all alarms. Leaning, leaning, Oh, how sweet to walk in this pilgrim way, Oh, how bright the path grows from day to day, What have I to dread? What have I to fear, leaning on the everlasting arms? I have blessed peace with my Lord so near, Benediction About Northside Church of Richmond is a mission church of the Presbyterian Church in America (www. pcanet.org), planted in October 2011.
