Pastor s Message Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is apart of it. 1 Cor. 12:27 Right after telling his disciples to ask God to send laborers out into the harvest, Christ chose and sent forth twelve people with the authority or power, to proclaim the Good News, to cure, to raise the dead, cleanse lepers and cast out demons. Parish Council Gary Hovhanessian Arthur Simonian Jr. John Maljanian Jr. David Abrahamian Matthew Cannata Charles Hovsepian Robbin Demircan Rev. Fr. Patricia Buttero Gail Onanian Sons and Daughters John Paul Abrahamian Women s Guild One responsibility of the church and of every member of the church, as good stewards, is to be active within our own communities, bringing within our lives and families, the transforming power and presence of Jesus Christ. This responsibility, challenge or calling is not limited to clergy, but is extended to laity as well. To be a layperson in the church is a vocation just as being clergy, since you too are called there by God. Today s society does have its fair share of demons and distractions, which may hinder us, if we allowed it, from further strengthening His Holy, catholic and Apostolic church, for which we are stewards. Christians can overcome the distracting powers of evil, by the witness of their life style, by love, joy, peace, patient endurance, kindness, fidelity, generosity, gentleness, and self-control, which St. Paul calls the Fruit of the Spirit. May we all take inventory of our stewardship and decide if there are better ways to strengthen His church, the one we re blessed to call home here in New Britain. May Almighty God continue to bless, protect and keep watch over all of His children. With prayers, Reverend Fr. Kapriel Mouradjian Pastor Mission of the Armenian Church The mission of the Armenian Apostolic Church is to preach the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ and to proclaim its message of salvation. This mission is realized through Worship, Education, Witness, Service, and common life in Christ as expressed in the distinctive faith - experience of the Armenian people. All members of the Armenian Church - both clergy and lay - are called to participate fully 4 in this mission.

Parish News Basil Donations We would like to recognize and thank the following for their donations of basil for our Holy Altar for the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on September 13: Peter Bagdigian, Jr., Cannata family, John & Roxie Maljanian, Harry & Janice Mazadoorian, Arthur & Lucy Simonian and Guy & Darlene Simonian. May God bless all who labor for His Holy Church. Armenian School is starting We now have a small collection of adults seeking classes in reading/writing Armenian. If you are interested, please speak to Der Hayr. Where are you, and what are you seeking? Using a model from other churches, Fr. Kapriel has invited all to become members of our parishes Pastoral Council. This group of individuals may open and respectfully share their concerns and suggestions for ways to strengthen our parish community. Please speak to Der Hayr to share your thoughts. Children in Faith Benefits of Sunday School Children become more familiar with the teachings of Holy Scripture. Developing a regular habit of Church involvement will carry children through adolescence and adulthood with stronger Christian values. Being active in the life of the church surrounds children in a positive, spiritual environment where Christian role models help to reinforce the importance of having a lasting relationship with God. Join others and us in raising strong Christian-Armenian leaders for our future, and for your family. Consecration of Holy Icon throughout our Diocese on Sunday, November 1 On this date, our Diocesan Primate has granted special permission to parish clergy to consecrate the picture for our Sanctuary of the Holy Martyrs, as was presented in Holy Etchmiadzin for the Canonization of the Martyrs on April 23. Please plan to be with us for church and the consecration service on this special day. 5 Sunday School On a beautiful Sunday morning on September 13, we welcomed back all of our smiling students and parents to Sunday School on shining waxed floors and decorated bulletin boards! What a pleasure to see young people once again! After our introductions, class activities, photos and participation in Badarak services, the Sunday School sponsored Fellowship Hour with Make your own Sundaes for all to enjoy! Hopefully, we didn t worry about calories for this one day! Serving on the Altar were some of our students, graduates and senior servers to enhance the ceremony of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, along with the choir and organ. As Der Hayr stated, he had never seen such an abundance of sweet basil that parishioners had donated! Our thanks again to Rose Linda Tashjian and Karlin Asatourian for remembering the needs of Sunday School with their donations of supplies. With our 35th anniversary of our present church on September 20, we all looked forward to the visit of our Srpazan, Archbishop Khajag Barsamian with his wise counsel. As part of the commemoration, our Sunday School was able to donate to our church. Next issue, we will be sure to recap the day. All students were notified, via their school calendars, that there were no classes on this day. Speaking of donations, our Sunday School, along with St. Stephen and St. George, have been working together to sponsor an Armenian themed Christmas tree for the annual Wadsworth Athenaeum December tree display. By the end of October, everything will be finalized after which we will post when the event will go on display for the public. Beautiful ornaments made by some children, along with items from Armenian and teachers efforts, have been going on for several months. Please keep the dates open after it is posted. A special thank you to Anita Arakelian for hosting the meetings in her home. With fall season in full swing, a gentle reminder to all church families that we will be sponsoring the Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive for the benefit of New Britain Friendship Center from November 8 through 20. Any non-perishable food items are appreciated! Containers for them will be in the Abrahamian Auditoirum. Our sincere thanks in advance! 6

From the Desk of the Parish Council man Our future has already begun... Father Kapriel has initiated three discussion sessions to promote the past, our progress and future of our parish. All parishioners are encouraged to attend. We discuss many topics at our Parish Council meetings. Some seem to be trivial and others of the utmost importance. We sometimes criticize ourselves for hashing over a topic month after month. But, we press forward. We hope you ll take Der Hayr s efforts seriously, as well as those of our PC members. At last month's meeting, we struck a slight nerve that we're sure will be a more in depth topic in at upcoming meetings. The topic is OUR FUTURE. Not only the future of our parish here on Stanley Street but also the future of many Armenian Churches across our nation. We've assimilated. We are now third and fourth generation children who were taught by our parents and grandparents and great-grandparents to "follow" and to "just do it" (using the Nike sneakers term) when it came to participating in the life of our church. How do we get more people involved? We have now assimilated to where the majority of our church families have at least one non-armenian speaking spouse. Thankfully, we have to share and enjoy a committed pastor, successful Sunday School, an active diocesan and local youth organization and yes, we look out for our seniors as well. Our challenges, which are common to all church denominations, are not insurmountable. As has been offered, the answers to all our family and parish situations are in our mirrors. There are many more issues and the concern continues. You have opportunities to discuss these issues with your Pastor and members of your Parish Council. There are three dates marked on the calendar... Monday, October 5th and Monday, November 2nd and Tuesday, December 1st. Come and discuss together how we can continue the progress of our forefathers. The discussions will take place in our Abrahamian Auditorium and the start time is 6:45 PM. 7 Consecration Anniversaries On Sunday, September 20, Diocesan Primate, His Eminence Abp. Khajag Barsamian, presided during Divine Liturgy as our parish marked the 35th Consecration Anniversary of our current Sanctuary and the 10th Consecration Anniversary of the Ordination to the Order of the Holy Priesthood of our pastor, Fr. Kapriel Mouradjian. Also participating in the Divine Liturgy & Banquet was Fr. Kapriel s sponsoring priest for ordination, Reverend Fr. Karekin Kasparian, Pastor Emeritus, St. Gregory the Enlightener, White Plains, NY. During the sermon, Srpazan Hayr brought together the theme of miracles, and how the Armenian people survived the Genocide, to witness the sainthood of 1.5 million martyrs (witnesses to the faith), the formation of the New Britain parish 74 years ago and subsequent new Sanctuary 35 years ago, and the formation of a young man from Providence (Fr. Kapriel) to be their future clergyman. An outstanding banquet followed services led by Henrietta Kallajian along with Elizabeth Bagdasarian, Yn. Patricia Buttero, Ellen Hovhanessian, Michelle Kalfayan, Melanie Kallajian, Sarah Kallajian & Elisa Marottolo, Gail Onanian, Paula Pare & Robbin Demircan. The day s table centerpieces were made and donated by Yn. Patricia Buttero, & both celebratory cakes were made by Emily Kallajian. Outstanding musical selections were also offered by David & Matthew Marottolo; Nicholas Kallajian led the Star Spangled Banner and and Yn. Pat Buttero led the faithful in the Armenian Anthem. Individual notes of thanks were offered by P.C Gary Hovhanessian, and led by Master of Ceremonies, Harry Mazadoorian, Esq, parishioners, Harry Hougas, John Maljanian, Yn. Pat Buttero and Guy Simonian shared their memories of the efforts 35+ years ago in making our Sanctuary a realization. On behalf of the Altar servers, Sub Dn. Matthew Cannata passionately cited the contributions on and off the Altar by Fr. Kapriel and how as pastor he balances the needs and demands of the entire parish. MC Harry Mazadoorian also read a Proclamation from New Britain Mayor Erin Stewart on the occasion of Fr. Kapriel s anniversary, citing his numerous community activities. Echoing Der Hayr s presence in New Britain, was Community Mental Health Affiliates President, Raymond Gorman, who commented on Fr. Kapriel s accomplishments for those in need of mental health assistance, presented a very generous gift to our parish on the occasion of Fr. Kapriel s anniversary. Reverend Fr. Karekin Kasparian shared his memories of his mentoring and tutelage of Fr. Kapriel during seminary leading up to his appointment to New Britain, while Fr. Kapriel spoke of how his anniversary was really owed to the saints of the Genocide, former clergy of New Britain (who were all named), the guidance and support of the Primate, Fr. Kasparian & Yn. Dawn and his own family s sacrifice and support. Archbishop Barsamian, in offering the closing remarks, again emphasized as he did during his sermon, how miracles do happen and how we may all respond to opportunities of faith, and the sharing of spirituality and continually being welcoming to people. Now, we plan for our 75th Consecration Anniversary!!! 8
