The Providence of God in the Sting of Death John 19:31-42 April 1, 2012 The title of my message this morning is, The Providence of God in the Sting of Death. Where is God after the funeral? Funerals are very important. They bring us into touch with the reality of death. They move us from what seems surreal to a sense of reality that is necessary to the process of grieving. Yet to find renewed hope in the midst of sorrow, the most important question is not where is my loved one or what is life like there, but where is God? There are two doctrines that are most essential for you to cling to when you endure life s most raw experiences. When suffering comes and you feel the sting of death, you must cling to the sovereignty of God and the goodness of God. If you take either of these attributes out of the equation, you will become disillusioned. 1 Sovereignty Goodness = Hardened Heart (bitterness) If God is sovereign but not good, then you will blame God saying, God s responsible for the bad things in my life and you will plunge into the spiritual bondage of bitterness and the hardening of heart that follows. Goodness Sovereignty = Hopelessness (despair) If God is good but not Sovereign (in control), then you will say, If God can t intervene in my situation then nobody can and you will plunge into the spiritual bondage of hopelessness and the depression that follows. 1 See also sermon, Healthy Habits of the Heart for a Godward Life (1Thess 5:16-18; Nov 27, 2011) But the truth is that God is both Sovereign (in control) and good. Sometimes you will need to preach to yourself from verses like: A. Sovereign Psalm 103:19 ~ The LORD has established His throne in the heavens; And His sovereignty rules over all. (including suffering and Satan) Job 42:2 ~ I know that You can do all things and that no purpose of Yours can be thwarted. B. Good Psalm 119:68 ~ You are good and only do good. Romans 8:28 ~ And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. If you are not a child of God, then all of God s greatness and goodness does not work to your advantage but rather works against you because you are not ultimately good; and so His holiness, justice, righteousness, and sovereignty must work against you to establish His good purposes in resisting sin. But if you have come to Christ and received His righteousness (meaning His goodness has conquered your sin) then you can cling to God s Greatness and Goodness with genuine hope. Sovereignty + Goodness = Hope When tragic things happen, many Christians want to excuse God from the situation: God s not in that! But when we take God out of the equation of life, we fail to acknowledge who He really is as God and we pull hope right out from under us. Oh, these things may come at the hand of Satan, but even his actions don t change the reality of who God is. What we need most is the assurance that nothing in life takes God by surprise; nothing thwarts His

ultimate purposes for good. Oh, we can t see how it all fits together right now, but we can know that He will ensure its proper end. Nothing could seem more tragic than the cross, and yet it produced the greatest good. As we consider this final portion of John 19 which details the burial of Jesus, we re going to see the providence of God behind the sting of death. So here s what we are going to do: 1. Trace God s hand behind the events of this passage (His providence) 2. Examine the raw reality of Jesus humanity in His death 3. Bring these two lenses together to see the glory of God s goodness come into focus. John 19: 31-42 31 Then the Jews, because it was the day of preparation, so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. 32 So the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the first man and of the other who was crucified with Him; 33 but coming to Jesus, when they saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out. 35 And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also may believe. 36 For these things came to pass to fulfill the Scripture, NOT A BONE OF HIM SHALL BE BROKEN. 37 And again another Scripture says, THEY SHALL LOOK ON HIM WHOM THEY PIERCED. 38 After these things Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but a secret one for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate granted permission. So he came and took away His body. 39 Nicodemus, who had first come to Him by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds weight. 40 So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen wrappings with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. 41 Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. 42 Therefore because of the Jewish day of preparation, since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there. 1. The Providence of God a. in the fulfillment of Scripture The most obvious way to see God s greatness here is in the fulfillment of Scripture. God, in His providence, saw to it that every detail would happen in such a way that the prophecies of old would be specifically fulfilled verifying Jesus as the Messiah. The Jews asked Pilate to break the legs of those being crucified to hasten their death (vs. 31). This is because Deut. 21:22-23 declares that if a man is put to death by hanging him on a tree, he is to be buried the same day so as not to defile the land. Not only was nightfall approaching, but also the Sabbath, and a special Sabbath at that, which fell during the Passover celebration. To hasten death they would smash the legs with a iron mallet. When the legs were broken, the victims could no longer push themselves upward in order to breath and so they would die by asphyxiation they would suffocate. So the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the first man and of the other who was crucified with Him; but coming to Jesus, when they saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. (vs. 32-33). Because Jesus appeared to already be dead, the soldiers didn t break His legs but rather pierced His side with a spear to verify that He was certainly dead (vs.34). In vs. 36-37, John confirms that these events are a fulfillment of Scripture. 1) Not a bone of Him shall be broken (vs. 36). This comes from Ex. 12:46 and Num. 9:12, which both put a restriction on

breaking the bones of the Passover Lamb. And so we see that Jesus is again the proper fulfillment of the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. He is our Passover delivering us from the just wrath of God. There may also be an illusion to Psalm 34:20 which speaks of God s care for the righteous: He keeps all his bones; not one of them is broken. Jesus is the perfectly righteous Lamb who fulfills the Passover. 2) They shall look on Him whom they pierced (vs. 37). This is a reference to Zech. 12:10: And I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace and of supplication, so that they will look on Me whom they have pierced; and they will mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only son, and they will weep bitterly over Him, like the bitter weeping over a first-born. It s interesting to note here that it is God who is speaking; God is the One who is pierced, as they mourn for Him who is like an only son. There appears to be such a close association between the two that they can be considered one just as Jesus and the Father in the Gospel of John. In other words, when John applies this verse to Jesus, He is God Himself who is pierced (cf. Zech. 12:8; 13:1,7). b. behind every character Furthermore, we see the Providence of God not only in the specific fulfillment of Scripture, we see it behind every character in this passage. a. We see God s hand behind the Jews in vs. 31. It s not a surprise that they would want to get Jesus off of the cross before the Sabbath since their religious legalism had become their god. Yet the timing was providential to fulfill Jesus earlier words in Matt. 12:40 where He declared, just as Jonah was 3 days and 3 nights in the belly of the sea monster, so shall the Son of Man be 3 days and 3 nights in the heart of the earth. God s hand of providence was even behind the Jew s request so that Jesus could be buried 3 days and still rise Sunday morning according to God s plan. b. We see God s hand behind the Roman soldiers in vs. 32-36 who fulfilled Scripture by refraining to break Jesus legs and chose rather to pierce His side. c. We see God s hand behind Pilate who not only granted the request to have Jesus removed from the cross but also entrusted His body to Joseph of Arimathea so that Jesus could be buried in a rich man s grave in keeping with Isaiah 53:9: His grave was assigned with wicked men, Yet He was with a rich man in His death d. We see God s hand behind Joseph of Arimathea. Vs. 38 says that He was a disciple of Jesus but a secret one for fear of the Jews. We know from the other gospels that Joseph was a good and righteous man, a prominent member of the Jewish council who did not consent with their plan to crucify Jesus. So what would cause him to come out in the open now? Jesus was dead. Why take the risk of Sanhedrin s dismay? Why gather up the courage to approach Pilate who was already vexed with the Jewish leaders? Why would Joseph honor Jesus with his own upscale tomb? There can only be one reason: There must have been a work of God in his heart during the final hours of Jesus life that would convince him to openly honor Jesus regardless of the personal cost. We see the providence of God at work in his life. e. We see God s hand behind Nicodemus who assisted Joseph in caring for Jesus lifeless body. Like Joseph, Nicodemus was also a ruling Pharisee. In chapter 3, he had come to Jesus by night to secretly acknowledge that Jesus was from God. In John 7:50-51, Nicodemus spoke in Jesus defense before the Sanhedrin saying that a man cannot be judged by the law until he was given the opportunity to explain his actions.

So why would Nicodemus risk associating with Jesus now that He was dead? Why would He supply an enormous amount of spices for Jesus burial? It s no mere coincidence that John reminds us in vs. 39 that Nicodemus had first come to Jesus by night. In that encounter in John 3, the last thing Jesus says to Nicodemus in vs. 21 is this: He who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God. Now in John 19 we see Nicodemus coming out into the light so to speak, manifesting that his deeds are a work of God. The providence of God is at work in the Nicodemus life. f. We see God s providence in the apostle John himself as an eyewitness of Jesus death who later wrote this gospel so that we might believe. Look at vs. 35, And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also may believe. (cf. 20:31). 2. The Humanity of Jesus It is essential for you to understand that Jesus had to be both fully God and fully man in order to reconcile us to God through His cross. As God, His sacrifice was perfect, infinite and eternal in its value; able to save all those who trust in Him in every age and every place for all eternity. But it was also necessary for Him to be fully man so that He could actually stand in our place as a true substitute for man and bear the penalty of our sin. Already by the writing of John s Gospel, there was a false doctrine circulating called docetism, which taught that Jesus only appeared to have a human body but was not fully man. And so John goes out of his way to give evidence to the humanity of Jesus by the irrefutable facts of His death. The humanity of Jesus is never so raw than in the sting of death. It was already apparent in vs. 33 that Jesus was dead that s why they didn t break his legs. Yet to verify that fact beyond any shadow of a doubt, the soldiers pierced his side from which John himself saw blood and water flow (vs. 34-35). D.A Carson documents how severe trauma to the chest can cause up to 2 liters of fluid to build up between the lining of the rib cage and the lining of the lungs. This fluid would then separate with the clearer serum on the top and the deeper red layer on the bottom. If the chest cavity were then pierced at the bottom, what would flow out was a blood-like substance followed by the clearer water-like fluid. The Roman soldiers were experienced enough to know that this occurrence was a certain indicator death. Now take special note of vs. 35, And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also may believe. John gives us a triple emphasis on the truthfulness of what he saw, and he testified to what He saw so that we would believe! Believe what? Believe that Jesus was indeed fully human just as we are in flesh and blood and that indeed He died beyond any shadow of a doubt. Why is that so important? Because without definite death, you cannot have a genuine resurrection. The certainty of Jesus humanity and His death is essential to the gospel we believe in. He tasted death for us (Hebrews 2:9). 3. The Glory of God s Goodness (1 Cor. 15:54-55; Heb. 2:14; I Thess. 4:13-14) When we bring together these two lenses of the providence of God and the raw humanity of Jesus in death, what comes into focus is the goodness of God in all its glory. It was the providence of God in the death of Jesus that gave us the sure hope of victory over sin, death, and Satan.

Jesus took the sting of death so that death would be swallowed up in victory. Jesus took the sting of death so we could sing, O death where is your victory? O death, where is your sting? (I Corinthians 15:54-55). When Jesus took the sting of death, He took the sting out of death. In I Thess. 4, Paul says that when a believer dies in Jesus, we do not grieve as the rest who have no hope. Why? Because those who die in Jesus will be raised with Jesus. Yet what about Satan, that great liar, who wants to deceive us to keep us from walking in the truth? Well, the providence of God in the death of Jesus ensured that the death of Jesus was no victory for Satan. Hebrews 2:14: Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, [Jesus] Himself also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is the devil, and might free those who through fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives. The providence of God in the death of Jesus conquered our every foe (Satan, sin, guilt, shame, death, hell, condemnation). Do you see the glory of God s goodness? Do you see the invaluable riches of God s grace and mercy and love that flow out to us through the providential death of Jesus? Through the cross, God was providentially working all things together to the ultimate good of those who love Him, those who are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28). Are you standing in that river of grace? Is that stream of pure goodness flooding over you? You must go to the cross with Christ His suffering must be your own, bearing God s wrath. You must be buried with Christ His death must be your own, defeating sin. You must be raised with Christ His victory must be your own, How? You take hold of Him by faith and all that He has done is yours.
