The Third Sunday in Lent March 4, 2018 10:00 AM The Holy Eucharist, Rite I Celebrant - The Reverend Bridget K. Tierney Preacher - The Reverend Canon Steven M. Roberts It is the tradition of the Episcopal Church to maintain silence in the worship area so that people may pray. Please help us preserve an atmosphere of quiet reverence before worship begins, remembering to turn pagers and cell phones off; let the music of the opening voluntary quiet your thoughts as you prepare for worship. Children, Kindergarten through 6th grade are invited to the Nursery for breakfast and the Good Shepherd Atrium for Christian Formation. They will join us in the cathedral at The Peace. An usher will be happy to assist you with directions. The Word of God Opening Voluntary ~ Prière, Op.20...César Franck When the bell sounds, please stand and join in singing Processional Hymn #388 ~ O worship the King, all glorious above!... Hanover A Penitential Order Prayer Book, Page 319 Celebrant Bless the Lord who forgiveth all our sins. People His mercy endureth for ever. The Confession and Absolution Prayer Book, Page 320 Celebrant Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God. Silence may be kept Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against thee in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved thee with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. Lord have mercy Kyrie eleison We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of thy Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in thy will, and walk in thy ways, to the glory of thy Name. Amen.

The Collect of the Day Celebrant People Celebrant The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Let us pray. Almighty God, who seest that we have no power of ourselves to help ourselves: Keep us both outwardly in our bodies and inwardly in our souls, that we may be defended from all adversities which may happen to the body, and from all evil thoughts which may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The First Lesson ~ Exodus 20:1-17 Then God spoke all these words: I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; you shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and the fourth generation of those who reject me, but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments. You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not acquit anyone who misuses his name. Remember the sabbath day, and keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work. But the seventh day is a sabbath to the LORD your God; you shall not do any work-- you, your son or your daughter, your male or female slave, your livestock, or the alien resident in your towns. For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but rested the seventh day; therefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day and consecrated it. Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you. You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. You shall not covet your neighbor s house; you shall not covet your neighbor s wife, or male or female slave, or ox, or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor. Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. The choir sings Psalm 19 Caeli enarrant 1 The heavens declare the glory of God, * and the firmament shows his handiwork. 2 One day tells its tale to another, * and one night imparts knowledge to another. 3 Although they have no words or language, * and their voices are not heard, 4 Their sound has gone out into all lands, * and their message to the ends of the world. 5 In the deep has he set a pavilion for the sun; * it comes forth like a bridegroom out of his chamber; it rejoices like a champion to run its course. 6 It goes forth from the uttermost edge of the heavens and runs about to the end of it again; * nothing is hidden from its burning heat. 7 The law of the LORD is perfect and revives the soul; * the testimony of the LORD is sure and gives wisdom to the innocent. 8 The statutes of the LORD are just and rejoice the heart; * the commandment of the LORD is clear Setting by Samuel Sebastian Wesley and gives light to the eyes. 9 The fear of the LORD is clean and endures for ever; * the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether. 10 More to be desired are they than gold, more than much fine gold, * sweeter far than honey, than honey in the comb. 11 By them also is your servant enlightened, * and in keeping them there is great reward. 12 Who can tell how often he offends? * cleanse me from my secret faults. 13 Above all, keep your servant from presumptuous sins; let them not get dominion over me; * then shall I be whole and sound, and innocent of a great offense. 14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, * O LORD, my strength and my redeemer. The Second Lesson ~ 1 Corinthians 1:18-25 The message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart. Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, God decided, through the

foolishness of our proclamation, to save those who believe. For Jews demand signs and Greeks desire wisdom, but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For God s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God s weakness is stronger than human strength. Lector People Please stand. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. The choir sings the Tract - 42:1-7 Quemadmodum 1 As the deer longs for the water brooks, * so longs my soul for you, O God. 2 My soul is athirst for God, athirst for the living God; * when shall I come to appear before the presence of God? 3 My tears have been my food day and night, * while all day long they say to me, Where now is your God? 4 I pour out my soul when I think on these things: * how I went with the multitude The Holy Gospel ~ John 2:13-22 Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. People Glory be to thee, O Lord. and led them into the house of God, 5 With the voice of praise and thanksgiving, * among those who keep holy day. 6 Why are you so full of heaviness, O my soul? * and why are you so disquieted within me? 7 Put your trust in God; * for I will yet give thanks to him, who is the help of my countenance, and my God. The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple he found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and the money changers seated at their tables. Making a whip of cords, he drove all of them out of the temple, both the sheep and the cattle. He also poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. He told those who were selling the doves, Take these things out of here! Stop making my Father s house a marketplace! His disciples remembered that it was written, Zeal for your house will consume me. The Jews then said to him, What sign can you show us for doing this? Jesus answered them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. The Jews then said, This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and will you raise it up in three days? But he was speaking of the temple of his body. After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this; and they believed the scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken. Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. The Prayer of Humble Access We do not presume to come to this thy Table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy Table. But thou art the same Lord whose property is always to have mercy. Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen. The Invitation to and Distribution of Holy Communion All persons are welcome at the Lord s table; to receive Holy Communion or a Blessing. Baptized Christians of all ages and denomination may receive the elements. To receive a blessing rather than the elements, cross your arms over your chest as you kneel at the altar rail. Spring Adult Education - Early Christian Literature that didn t get into the New Testament Twenty-seven books were accepted by the Church as the New Testament. Many other books were written in the first century that didn t get into the approved scripture of the Church. Many of the non-canonical texts were very much respected, but didn t make the cut; others were scurrilous and deserved to be thrown-aside. In this offering we will read and discuss some of the good books and some of the bad books. The texts can be found in two readily available and very reasonably priced anthologies. The first is Cyril Richardson (ed.) Early Christian Fathers (Library of Christian Classics, vol. 1) and the second is Lost Scriptures: The Books that did not Make it into the New Testament (Bart Ehrman, ed). Both books are available from Amazon at less than $10 each. The sessions will meet on Wednesday afternoons, February 28, March 7, 14, 21 and April 11, 18 and 25. There will also be a single day session on Saturday, April 28. Please consider hosting Coffee Hour after a 10:00 am Sunday Eucharist. This is a vital part of our ministry. The sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board in the hallway outside of Stuart Hall. If you or a family member is hospitalized or shut-in, please contact the parish secretary during office hours or call one of us directly on our mobile phones at any time and leave a voice message if necessary. If the situation is not urgent you may also contact use via email (copying the parish secretary as well.) Please DO NOT use text messages, Facebook or any other instant message platform to communicate sensitive or urgent information, as their reliability is inconsistent.

March 4, 2018 Ð Lent 3 (B) The Presiding BishopÕs Lent 3 Devotional Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop and Primate Michael Curry joined the leaders of the Anglican Church of Canada, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada, and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in preparing Lenten Devotions for the season. The full set of devotions, ÒSet Free by Truth,Ó can be found and printed at bit.ly/lentendevotional. ÒBut we proclaim Christ crucifiedó Some things just donõt make much sense. Water doesnõt become wine, bread and fish do not suddenly multiply, the lame do not jump up and walk. And most certainly, dead people stay dead, especially those who experience the horrific death of crucifixion! And yet, where Jesus is involved, all kinds of things that donõt make much sense...happen. In those earliest years of the Jesus Movement, his followers didnõt wear crosses around their necks or hang them in the homes in which they worshipped. They had other symbols, certainly, but not crosses. Crucifixion was not a historical curiosity, but a still-present reality, and an agonizing and shameful one at that. To be crucified was to be executed as a common criminal. Worse, according to the Hebrew Scriptures, cursed was one who hung on a tree, on the wood of a cross. So to speak of ÒChrist crucifiedó didnõt make sense to many. It was a stumbling block, something foolish or offensive. But Paul said otherwise. Yes, Jesus could have avoided the cross, found some other way around it. But instead he faced the worst the world could throw at him, and then broke through death itself, and left an empty cross behind as witness to his astonishing victory. Some things donõt make much sense. The cross is one of them. But it stands now and forever as our rallying cry that GodÑnot injustice, not suffering, not even deathñhas the final, victorious word. Presiding Bishop Michael Curry The Episcopal Church Prayer ÒLord Jesus Christ, you stretched out your arms of love on the hard wood of the cross that everyone might come within the reach of your saving embrace.ó Prayer for Mission, The Book of Common Prayer 1979 Published by the Office of Communication of The Episcopal Church, 815 Second Avenue, New York, N.Y. 10017 2018 The Domestic and Foreign Missionary Society of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America.
